Recenze/review - BÜTCHER - On Fowl of Tyrant Wing (2024)
I don't know how you guys set it up, but I do my own private retro weekends. I go down to the basement, turn off the whole world, crack open a beer and pull out the old records. I dust them off and then I read. It's a relaxing, relaxing, relaxing time for me. I know, there's a lot of nostalgia and memories in there, too. I already wrote about Belgian BÜTCHER in 2020. And their last album I'm happy to include in my private collection. When I received their new album for review a few weeks ago, I was waiting for the weekend. When it would be quiet, when I could fully concentrate on the next ride straight to hell.
Sure, it's retro as hell. Sure, it's all been here before and everything. But that's not how I approach music. It's a little bit different for me. I usually just sit back and let the music affect me. And listening to "On Fowl of Tyrant Wing " I enjoyed one of the other trips back in time. Back to a time when bands like DESASTER, MERCYFUL FATE, CELTIC FROST, DARKTHRONE, AGENT STEEL ruled the world. Back to a time when denim vests were worn and the world was going in a completely different direction.
What I like most about BÜTCHER is that I trust every riff, every note. They may be orthodoxly classical and traditional, but there's a lot of pressure and energy bubbling under the surface. The songs have this heavy effect to them that I don't think can be taught. You have to have it in you, you have to play from the heart. And that's what the Belgians can do. For me personally, listening afterwards is such a very interesting visit to the old archives. Sometimes I just like to be alone, and I only choose records that sink their claw into me. "On Fowl of Tyrant Wing " is exactly the kind of album I'll listen to in moments of ease when I need to unwind. The sound is also a success, being beautifully clear, animalistic and raw at the same time. Many comparisons come to mind, but most of all the new album reminds me of a long untreated wound, a fracture from the old days that is making itself known again. Actually, I think again that in this case it's really better to listen than to write some words that can't accurately describe the news anyway. You'll either love BÜTCHER or you won't care. A lot depends on how you approach the music as a whole and then also how imaginative you are. I'm sure you know the moments when the full moon falls upon you and the world is shrouded in endless darkness. Then the first sharp riff cuts through the air. Then I'm just lost and surfing the foamy waves of a wild river flowing straight into the beyond. It's time to go back to the basement, turn off the whole world, open a beer and pull out the old records. "On Fowl of Tyrant Wing" will take pride of place among them. A real, dark and cold, real speed black metal ride straight to hell! The clouds are touching the ground!
