U některých jedinců nebylo poznat, zda to jsou ještě lidé nebo už obživlé mrtvoly. Přeměna v zombie probíhala postupně. Hluboko pod naším městem, v kanálech, kam se obyčejní lidé báli vstoupit. Špinavá stoka, zápach rozkládajícího se masa. Nepomáhal oheň, ani jedovatý plyn. Nakonec podobná místa vždy přitáhla všechny prokleté. Připomínalo mi to celé živoucí, ošklivý organismus, který když vás chytí do svých drápů, tak z něj není úniku. Takhle nějak si představuji reálný vstup do pekla. Netrvalo to dlouho a byl jsem ihned pokousán a proklet.

Velmi podobnou, špinavou a destruktivní náladu má i první dlouhohrající album francouzských death metalistů NERVOUS DECAY. Poslouchám jej stále dokola a obzvlášť v noci vidím zlé přízraky. Přišly si pro mě. Stáhly mě do hlubiny. 


Máte rádi klasický death metal devadesátých let, když své nejlepší časy zažívaly kapely jako DEATH, MASSACRE, PESTILENCE, MERCYLESS a spoustu dalších, které kdysi utvářely i můj názor na hudbu jako takovou? Pak by se vám mohli líbit i NERVOUS DECAY, které ctí staré pořádky bezezbytku. A to jak po zvukové stránce (Laurent Cottreau), tak i obalem (Keshalan). Deska je hudbou pro všechny staré prašivé psy, pro fanoušky temnoty. Nemrtví se usmívají, ve stoce se převalují další nafouklá těla. Smrt je při poslechu hodně blízko. Občas sice kapela možná až moc popustí uzdu své fantazii a některé momenty jsou trošku roztříštěné, ale to rozhodně nemůže pokazit celkový hnilobný dojem, který z nahrávky mám. Toulám se rád a často podzemím. Nahlížím do temných koutů, vyhledávám si pro sebe jen zkažené kousky masa. NERVOUS DECAY se stali na nějaký čas mými velmi schopnými průvodci záhrobím. Jejich album má v sobě totiž pradávnou energii, kterou mám tolik rád. Dokáží zahrát neurvale, syrově, přikovat mě na zeď. Exhumovat mé tělo a znovu mě pohřbít. Temný death metal staré školy, který vás vykostí zaživa! Velmi dobře!

Some individuals did not know whether they were still humans or already living corpses. The transformation into a zombie took place gradually. Deep below our city, in the canals that ordinary people were afraid to enter. Dirty sewer, the smell of decaying meat. Neither fire nor poison gas helped. In the end, similar places have always attracted all the damned. It reminded me of a whole living, ugly organism that, when caught in its claws, there is no escape from it. This is how I somehow imagine a real entry into hell. It didn't take long and I was immediately bitten and cursed.

The first full-length album of French death metalists NERVOUS DECAY has a very similar, dirty and destructive mood. I listen to him all the time and I see evil ghosts, especially at night. They came for me. They pulled me into the depths.


Do you like the classic death metal of the nineties, when bands like DEATH, MASSACRE, PESTILENCE, MERCYLESS and many others experienced their best times, which once shaped my opinion of music as such? Then you might also like NERVOUS DECAY, which honors the old order to the fullest. Both in terms of sound (Laurent Cottreau) and cover (Keshalan). The record is music for all old dusty dogs, for fans of darkness. The undead are smiling, other bloated bodies are rolling in the sewer. Death is very close when listening. Sometimes the band may unleash their imagination and some moments are a bit fragmented, but it certainly can not spoil the overall putrefaction impression I have from the recording. I wander around and often go underground. I look into the dark corners, looking for only rotten pieces of meat for myself. NERVOUS DECAY became for a time my very capable guides to the grave. Their album has an ancient energy that I love so much. They can play rudely, raw, nailing me to the wall. Exhume my body and bury me again. Old school dark death metal that will make you alive alive! Very good!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from France - NERVOUS DECAY.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Hi, thank you for giving us this interview ! We are Nervous Decay, a french death metal band from Nantes. We have been in existence since the end of 2017. The band is composed of Nathan and Grégoire who play guitars, Guilhem on the drum and Guillaume on vocals and bass.


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

The production of this album was selfmade, since it was recorded at Guilhem’s house with our own equipment (instruments, microphones, amps, etc…) and some of our soundtech’s mics. We had a quite precise idea of the sound we wanted before the recording.

Laurent, our soundtech, helped us a lot for placing the mics and doing the takes. He was also in charge of the mix and the mastering. We guided him a lot all along the mixing process, giving him our impressions and feedback. We really like what he did in the end ! So we thank him a lot !

We are glad to have this kind of “oldschool” sound, with the organic drums, scooped guitar and grinding bass, while keeping a lot of overall punch.


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

For the moment, our album was published in CD format only. 600 copies were pressed, we got 200 of them and the labels kept 400 for the promotion and sales. Don’t forget that you can listen to it for free on our bandcamp !

We hope that our debut will be warmly welcomed and that we will have to make some reissue ! Maybe some vinyls will be edited later !

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

It depends on the track, everyone in the band contributes more or less on the lyrical content. First we select a theme we would like to talk about and that fits well the music we wrote for the song. We try to depict a credible situation then push its absurdity to the most extreme point, so that it really hits the listener and encourages him to think about that situation.

As a whole, the lyrics deal with the human difficulties in order to think freely and efficiently in modern society. Despite the fact that knowledge has never been as available and vast as now, mental laziness and uniformisation of thoughts is really common. Profit often seems to be more essential than progress, wisdom and peace.


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo has been created by Arnaud Pavaillon, Guillaume’s brother. The cover artwork was actually painted on a canvas, and it was made by Keshalan. He is a french artist and also a friend. Both worked hard to build our visual image and they really nailed it !

We are pretty active on our social networks ! That’s not our favourite part but we are not in the 90’s anymore, and today they can’t be overlooked as it is part of the game ! Therefore we provide our audience all the pertinent information through our social media, facebook and instagram, so that they have maximum access to our music and news.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

Our debut album is released via Great Dane Records ! It’s an associative French label that publishes only Death and Thrash Metal music. We knew them thanks to the bands we toured with in eastern France, and we immediately liked the consistency and quality of their roaster!

The partnership is going well, all the information being given at its start. They’re available for our requests and the same goes with us ! The label is doing a great job promoting and advertising for our album, and we have a lot of album reviews and interviews thanks to this!


Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

We are all four huge fans of Death Metal, and we all agree on the fact that the band Death was a milestone in extreme music history. We also love bands like Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Atheist, Immolation, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Pestilence and many more, for the innovation they brought into the genre, as well as being damn raw and aggressive !

The inspiration comes from all the bands that wrote intense and complex riffs, and that we mixed in our own guitar playing style, we could mention Exodus, Slayer, Death, Morbid Angel, Megadeth… We also love to incorporate epic parts in our songs, and bands like At the gates, Gorgoroth, or Judas Priest also gave us a bit of inspiration. The Heavy Metal influence can be heard during the solo parts mostly!

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

We contacted a lot of labels, as we were willing to have a partnership for the release of our debut album, and we only targetted ones specialized extreme metal ! The vast majority didn’t respond at all, some responded but declined, and only few gave a positive answer. As a new band, it is not easy to find a label willing to give you a chance, regardless of the quality of the music.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We played about fifteen gigs between june 2019 and march 2020 ! We really like playing in small associative places, as the people are passionate and spend all their energy during the show ! Playing in large venues is also great, because it’s nice to have professional conditions, with our sound and a light tech, that allow us to do our best performance possible ! The most enjoyable gig we gave was probably at “La Mine” in Strasbourg, in january 2020, the connection with our audience was amazing!


What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We will keep on working hard ! We plan on touring extensively whenever it will be possible again ! We are ready to visit every town in France as well as to move abroad in order to give a lot of gigs and touch a broader audience !! We will gladly come to Czech Republic if the opportunity presents itself!

On the other hand, we’ve already started composing new tracks, and for the moment it sounds really promising!!
