Je úplně jedno, jestli si z dobré rodiny nebo si měl těžké dětství. Tady jsme si všichni rovni. Musíš v sobě probudit šelmu. Jinak zemřeš. Ležíme obličejem v bahně a nepřítel je zákeřný. Dům plný dětí, které se tě snaží zastřelit. Těhotná žena s výbušninou v ruce. Válka mění charakter. Staly se z nás zvířata, akorát nelovíme pro potravu, ale protože to nějaký politik chce. Vrátíš se domů se zohavenou tváří. Navěky v tobě zůstane bolest. Chvíli budeš hrdina a nakonec zemřeš sám. 

Když se každý den ráno podívám cestou do práce na zprávy, podobných příběhů jsou tam stovky. Na to, že válka je svinstvo a hnus je potřeba stále upozorňovat. Neznám lepší způsob, než chladný, melodický death metal. Přesně takový jako hrají JUST BEFORE DAWN. Je všeobecně známo, že hlavní postavou je legendární kytarista Anders Biazzi, který se obklopil neméně skvělými muzikanty, aby nám přinesl další svědectví o špíně, bolesti, ztrátách, smrti a bojištích. Letošní kompilaci doporučuji všem, kteří mají rádi severské smečky a BOLT THROWER.


Čtrnáct ostrých nábojnic, které vám proletí hlavou. Padnete k zemi a uslyšíte na druhé straně pochodující vojáky. Tohle téma patří ke smrtícímu kovu jako k mrtvému rakev. O kapele píšu od jejich začátků. Líbí se mi jejich rukopis, opravdovost, uvěřitelnost. Mám rád smečky, u kterých je slyšet, že hrají od srdce. Věřím jim každý tón, každou notu. Velmi se mi osvědčil následující postup. Klidné odpoledne, pivo v ruce a černobílý dokument o jedné z válek, které jako lidstvo neustále vedeme. Když si udělám náladu, bývá mi z našeho druhu smutno. Predátoři a jejich oběti. Tisíce hromadných hrobů. Pak si pouštím stále dokola ".​.​.​.​. of the Battlefields" a přemýšlím, kde děláme chybu. Ano, tahle deska je skvěle zahraná, má na mě až magický účinek. Je naším zrcadlem, do kterého není příliš hezký pohled. Zvuk, obal, produkce, tohle všechno je v absolutním pořádku. Není divu, o vše se postarali mistři ve svém oboru. Je pro mě děsivé, že by po mě měl zbýt jenom hrob beze jména. Kdysi jsem si myslel, že se lidé poučí, ale historie nás učí něco jiného. Poslouchat tuhle desku je jako pochodovat nočním lesem. Nevíte, kdo na vás zaútočí. Lekáte se každého stínu, máte radost, že jste přežili další den. Usmíváte se do ticha, abyste nakonec zemřeli na nákazu. Musím se vám k něčemu přiznat, jsem velkým fanouškem téhle skupiny. Líbí se mi vlastně všechna jejich alba a letošní kompilace není výjimkou. Jsem přímo účastníkem bojů a prožívám všechny příběhy. Pálí mě vnitřnosti, když mě někdo probodne. Padám na chladnou zem po střele v mé hlavě, rozpadám se v prach, když mě spálí na popel. Žádná válka nelze vyhrát. Další povedený zásek z dílny Andersa Biazziho a jeho věrných. Příkaz zněl jasně, všechny zabít! Chladné, syrové ozvěny z death metalových bojišť!

When I look at the news on my way to work every morning, there are hundreds of stories like this. The fact that war is shit and filth needs to be brought to our attention. I can't think of a better way than cold, melodic death metal. Just like JUST BEFORE DAWN. It's common knowledge that the main character is legendary guitarist Anders Biazzi, who has surrounded himself with equally great musicians to bring us another testimony of filth, pain, loss, death and battlefields. I recommend this year's compilation to anyone who likes Nordic pack and BOLT THROWER.


Fourteen live rounds that will go through your head. You fall to the ground and hear the soldiers marching on the other side. This theme belongs to the dead metal as a dead coffin. I've been writing about the band since they started. I like their handwriting, their realness, their believability. I like bands where you can hear them playing from the heart. I believe every note, every note. The following approach has worked very well for me. A quiet afternoon, beer in hand, and a black and white documentary about one of the wars we as humanity are constantly fighting. When I'm in the mood, I tend to feel sad for our species. Predators and their victims. Thousands of mass graves. Then I play "..... of the Battlefields" over and over and wonder where we're going wrong. Yes, this record is well played, it has an almost magical effect on me. It's our mirror, and it's not a pretty mirror to look into. The sound, the cover, the production, all of it is absolutely fine. No wonder, it's all been handled by masters in their field. It's frightening to me that I should be left with nothing but a nameless grave. I used to think that people would learn, but history teaches us otherwise. Listening to this record is like marching through the woods at night. You don't know who's gonna attack you. You're scared of every shadow, glad you survived another day. You smile into the silence, only to die of contagion. I have a confession to make, I'm a big fan of this band. I like pretty much all of their albums, and this year's compilation is no exception. I am a direct participant in the battles and experience all the stories. It burns my guts when someone stabs me. I fall to the cold ground after being shot in my head, I crumble into dust when I'm burned to ashes. No war can be won. Another good hit from Anders Biazzi and his faithful. The order was clear, kill them all! Cold, raw echoes of death metal battlefields!

Interview - CONVICTORS - Monstrous, maniacal death metal with devastating effect!

Ave CONVICTORS! Greetings to the German underground. I hope everything is fine with you. It should be because this year you have released a third long-play full-length album in your band's career. I have to admit it has literally blown my mind. It is dark, energic and as if it cuts by the sharp edge of the knife. can hear from the record you did a really good job and you added a big portion of the talent, too. How do you perceive the new album in comparison to the previous albums? Where did you want to move and in what are these records different?

Hey Jakub thank you for your introducing words and your praise.

I think every album is something special for a band. We wrote the music for the 3rd album during lockdown. In those dark times we put all the energy into our song writing. There is a lot of aggression in the songs and yes you can hear that...

We were energized to write the songs and also we wanted to be faster, harder and more straight-lined. I think we made it...


„Tartaros“ includes all attributes of good death metal. For me personally, it represents the record, which I really like to listen to. How did you produce it? How look the writing process of new material in the case of CONVICTORS?

Our bass player and I work seperately at home on new songs.

During our weekly sessions, as long this was posssible, we presented the new songs to our band mates in our rehearsal room. Based on their feedback we reworked the songs or we moved on with the drum sessions. Our drummer brought his technical skill into the songs algong with the speed. Our singer came with the lyrics and added his clear and brutal voice to the songs, which made them as they are today...

Who is signed for mixing and mastering? I have to confirm that the sound literally kills. It still makes me turn up the volume on my hi-fi tower. You've got a sound that's harsh, raw and dark and animalistic at the same time. What studio did you record in and how did everything go?

Since many years we record our albums in the Iguana Studios close to Freiburg in Germany.
The sound master is Chrisoph Brandes, he is a brilliant metal drummer and sound engineer.

He knows excactely how our music must sound. That is one of his strength. For this album we went in three different session to the studio. Frist we did the pre-production a few month later we recorded guitar and drums and the last session with bass and vocals was made half year later. So we had enough time to produce the new album.


An important part and a kind of extra bonus for fans today is the physical CD, vinyl. You issue it at Kernkraftritter Records, and it has a monumental cover art. Who is the author? How did you choose the motif and how does it relate to the music at the record?

The artwork creator is DAEMORPH. He is also a metal musician and creative artworker.

Based on our song lyrics, we had a vision in our mind. Those ideas, let´s call it concept, we discussed with Daemorph and introduced our ideas. With his creativity he developed this brilliant artwork. This artwork is the mirror of our music.

I have been wandering the underground for over thirty years and I still go to Germany for music with certainty (I love MORGOTH!). I think we have a similar nature and taste when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and I monitor your scene carefully. Maybe I envy you a little, because we only have a few death metal bands that are worth it. How do you explain that death metal are doing so well in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels?

Wow, you are also a long time in the scene. Great to know. Morgoth was an old and absolutley great German Death Metal Band. I also love the sound, style and the voice of them. Yes indeed, in Germany there is generally a huge underground scene. Our friends Deaf Aid, Death Metal from Freiburg started for example also very early, in 1989.

I think many Germans love the rough and hard sound of this style of metal. Also there are many excellent undergrond bands and also festivals. I love the variability of the scene and bands. This is really amazing.


You're a band from the 90s, but you were only active for a short time between 1986 and 1987, only to come back after a long time. Can you please take us through the history of the band?

We were a couple of friends loving the early sound of bands like Napalm Death, Death, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Messiah, Slayer and many more. So we decided to start doing our own music. At that time, 1986, it was quite a challenge to find the equipment so that you can play for the sound you love.

At once we had our instruments and a rehearsal room we started to write our songs. It took quite some time until we had some acceptable songs. We recoreded them in our rehearsalroom on a tape recorder... You can imagine that the sound was awful. Nevertheless we moved on and published and offered this tape “The Last Jugdement” in several metal magazines in Europe.

We sold all the tapes we have produced. We played concerts in the local scene. But somehow we stopped to play music. At that time we were all at school or in the aprrenticeship and we had no money.

Over all the years we stayed together as friends and visited many concerts. In 2008 the energy for making own music came back and we started to play again. From the original band the drummer had a rehearsal room so it was easy to restart. We wrote five songs and went into the Iguana Studios to record them. We played concerts, we had some changes in the band and in 2014 we released “Abdication Of Humanity, in 2019 “Atrocious Perdition” and now in 2023 “Tartaros”.


You play death metal influenced by, among other things, the old school. Today, the band can't avoid comparisons, but I would like to know how the idea to start CONVICTORS was born, who was and is your metal idol? Where do you want to move your band? Are you attracted to large foreign festivals, for example, are you willing to go on tour with a more famous band?

I remember the day, it was a Wednesday evening, listening as every Wednesday to the Swiss Metal Radio Show. It was in November or December 1985. They played an intro I have never heared bevore. It was “The Excorcist” from Possessed. That was increadably amazing. I still get chicken skin when I think back. And at that time also Kreator, Sodom, Desruction and Slayer had there first albums out. This kind of music influenced us extremly. I still love the albums from that time.

We would love to play some bigger festivals in Europe. Yes and we would also be willing to play small tours with more famous bands. I mean, performing on stage is still a huge pleasure.

When I started my blog six years ago, had a vision that I would try to support bands that are not so much popular, or they are lost in underground. To let the world knows about them. I think I'm doing quite well, at least according to the responses. How do you approach the promotion of your music? Do you rely upon the label or do you send the CDs for various reviews by yourself? For example, I buy albums that I really enjoy. What about you? Are you also fans who often support your colleagues? Do you go to concerts?

Your blog and others are elemetary for the underground scene. Without magazines and blogs the underground scene would probably not exist as it is today. I love reading the underground blogs. There are many interesting reports and interviews. I also like to discover new bands.

I am also a big fan oft underound music, a buy a lot of shirts and patches. Sometimes also records. It is important to support the underground scene. Making your own music is an expensive hobby.

For our pormotion we have the support from the label but we also send CD´s to magazines or blogs by ourselves.

I and also my friends and band mates love to go to concerts.


On the one hand, today the band has a lot of opportunities to make themselves more known, but on the other hand, there are a huge number of groups and the fans are getting lost in this big metal sea. A lot of people just download mp3s from the internet and instead of to visit the concert they prefer to spit poisonous saliva on Facebook. How do modern technologies affect you as CONVICTORS?

Yes indeed the social media platforms and the internet is like boon and bane. Compared to the early days it is good to have those tools and platforms, on the other hand, the music itsleves lost the worth. As you mentioned, there are inumerable bands in the scene and everyone tries to sell the music and is looking for shows. For the scene it is elementary that fans are visiting concerts.

What do you think about downloading music, google metalists, streaming music, etc.?

Personally I am also listening often online music. That is an easy way to listen to metal.

I like to ask the musicians what death metal means to them. How would they define it, whether it is more the philosophy and lifestyle thing for them or "just" relaxation? What does it mean for you? How do you perceive and experience it?

From my perspective metal in general is a lifestyle. Either you love or hate the music. I am wearing often metal shirts from bands, so yes for me it is a lifestyle.


Finally, a classic but important question. What is CONVICTORS planning in the upcoming months? Where can we see you at the stage?

We are looking for shows, mainly in Europe. Yes that is what we are working on. We hope to get some slots for 2023 and later in 2024.

Ave CONVICTORS! Zdravím do německého undergroundu. Doufám, že je u vás vše v pořádku. Mělo by, máte na kontě letos třetí dlouhohrající skvělé album své kariéry. Musím se přiznat, že mě doslova přikovalo na zeď. Je temné, energické, řeže ostrou hranou nože. Je hodně slyšet, že jste odvedli skvělou práci a taky velká porce talentu. Jak vnímáš novou desku v souvislosti s předchozími alby? Kam jak jste se chtěli posunout a v čem jsou podle tebe nahrávky odlišné?

Ahoj Jakube, děkuji ti za úvodní slova a pochvalu.

Myslím, že každé album je pro kapelu něčím výjimečné. Hudbu pro třetí album jsme napsali během výluky. V těch temných časech jsme do psaní písní vložili veškerou energii. V písních je hodně agrese a ano, je to slyšet...

Byli jsme plní energie při psaní písní a také jsme chtěli být rychlejší, tvrdší a přímočařejší. Myslím, že se nám to povedlo...


„Tartaros“ v sobě obsahuje všechny atributy dobrého death metalu. Pro mě osobně se jedná o desku, ke které se hrozně rád vracím. Jakým způsobem vznikala? Jak skládají nový materiál CONVICTORS?

Na nových písních pracujeme s naším baskytaristou odděleně doma.

Během našich týdenních sezení, dokud to bylo možné, jsme nové písně prezentovali kolegům z kapely v naší zkušebně. Na základě jejich zpětné vazby jsme písně přepracovali nebo jsme pokračovali v bubenických seancích. Náš bubeník vnášel do skladeb své technické dovednosti spolu s rychlostí. Náš zpěvák přišel s texty a dodal písním svůj čistý a brutální hlas, díky němuž jsou dnes takové, jaké jsou...

Kdo je podepsán pod mixem a masteringem? Musím potvrdit, že zvuk doslova zabíjí. Pořád mě to nutí na hi-fi věži přidávat volume. Máte zvuk, který je krutý, surový a zároveň temný a živočišný. V jakém studiu jste nahrávali a jak vše probíhalo?

Již mnoho let nahráváme naše alba ve studiu Iguana nedaleko německého Freiburgu.
Zvukovým mistrem je Chrisoph Brandes, vynikající metalový bubeník a zvukař.

Přesně ví, jak má naše hudba znít. To je jedna z jeho silných stránek. Kvůli tomuto albu jsme šli do studia na tři různé session. Nejdřív jsme dělali předprodukci, o pár měsíců později jsme nahráli kytaru a bicí a poslední session s basou a vokály proběhla o půl roku později. Měli jsme tedy dostatek času na produkci nového alba.


Nedílnou součástí a jakýmsi bonusem navíc je pro fanoušky dnes CD, vinyl. Vy jej vydáváte u Kernkraftritter Records a je opatřeno monumentálním obalem. Kdo je jeho autorem? Jak jste motiv vybírali a jak souvisí s hudbou na novince?

Autorem výtvarného díla je DAEMORPH. Je to metalový hudebník a kreativní výtvarník.

Na základě textů našich písní jsme měli v hlavě vizi. Tyto představy, říkejme jim koncept, jsme s Daemorphem prodiskutovali a představili mu naše nápady. Díky své kreativitě vytvořil tento brilantní artwork. Toto výtvarné dílo je zrcadlem naší hudby.

Toulám se podsvětím již přes třicet let a do Německa si chodím pro muziku vlastně na jistotu (miluju MORGOTH!). Myslím, že máme podobnou náturu i vkus, co se týká metalu. Mám vaše kapely hodně rád a pečlivě sleduji vaši scénu. Možná vám i trošku závidím, my máme u nás jen pár metalových smeček, které stojí za to. Čím si to vysvětluješ, že zrovna u vás se death metalu tolik daří? Jak vnímáš vaši scénu, fanoušky, labely?

Páni, vy jste na scéně také dlouho. To je skvělé vědět. Morgoth byla stará a naprosto skvělá německá deathmetalová kapela. Taky miluju jejich zvuk, styl a hlas. Ano, v Německu je obecně obrovská undergroundová scéna. Naši přátelé Deaf Aid, death metal z Freiburgu, začali například také velmi brzy, v roce 1989.

Myslím, že mnoho Němců miluje drsný a tvrdý zvuk tohoto stylu metalu. Také je tam mnoho vynikajících undergroundových kapel a také festivalů. Líbí se mi variabilita scény a kapel. To je opravdu úžasné.


Jste kapelou z devadesátých let, ale v letech 1986 - 1987 jste fungovali jen krátce, abyste se vrátili až po dlouhé době. Můžeš nás prosím provést historií kapely?

Byli jsme pár přátel, kteří milovali raný zvuk kapel jako Napalm Death, Death, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Messiah, Slayer a mnoha dalších. Tak jsme se rozhodli, že začneme dělat vlastní hudbu. V té době, v roce 1986, bylo docela náročné sehnat vybavení, abyste mohli hrát zvuk, který milujete.

Jakmile jsme měli nástroje a zkušebnu, začali jsme psát naše písně. Trvalo docela dlouho, než jsme měli nějaké přijatelné písničky. Nahrávali jsme je ve zkušebně na magnetofon... Dovedete si představit, že zvuk byl příšerný. Přesto jsme se posunuli dál a kazetu "The Last Jugdement" jsme vydali a nabídli v několika metalových časopisech v Evropě.

Prodali jsme všechny kazety, které jsme vyrobili. Hráli jsme koncerty v místní scéně. Ale nějak jsme přestali hrát hudbu. V té době jsme byli všichni ve škole nebo na učňáku a neměli jsme žádné peníze.

Po celá ta léta jsme zůstali spolu jako přátelé a navštívili mnoho koncertů. V roce 2008 se nám vrátila energie pro tvorbu vlastní hudby a začali jsme opět hrát. Z původní kapely měl bubeník zkušebnu, takže bylo snadné začít znovu. Napsali jsme pět písní a šli je nahrát do studia Iguana. Koncertovali jsme, proběhlo pár změn v kapele a v roce 2014 jsme vydali "Abdication Of Humanity", v roce 2019 "Atrocious Perdition" a nyní v roce 2023 "Tartaros".


Hrajete death metal ovlivněný starou školou. Dnes se vlastně kapela nemůže vyhnout srovnání, mě by ale zajímalo, jak vlastně vznikl nápad založit CONVICTORS, kdo byl a je vaším vzorem a kam vaši kapelu chcete posunout? Lákají vás třeba velké zahraniční festivaly, jste ochotni vyrazit na turné s nějakou slavnější smečkou?

Vzpomínám si na ten den, byla středa večer, poslouchal jsem jako každou středu Swiss Metal Radio Show. Bylo to v listopadu nebo prosinci 1985. Hráli intro, které jsem nikdy předtím neslyšel. Byl to "The Excorcist" od Possessed. Bylo to neuvěřitelně úžasné. Ještě teď se mi dělá kuřecí kůže, když si na to vzpomenu. A v té době vyšla první alba Kreator, Sodom, Desruction a Slayer. Tenhle druh hudby nás nesmírně ovlivnil. Dodnes mám alba z té doby rád.

Rádi bychom si zahráli na nějakých větších festivalech v Evropě. Ano, a také bychom rádi odehráli menší turné se slavnějšími kapelami. Myslím, že vystupování na pódiu je pořád obrovská radost.

Když jsem před šesti lety zakládal svoje stránky, měl jsem vizi, že se budu snažit podporovat kapely, které podle mě nejsou tolik na očích. Dát o nich vědět světu. Myslím, že se mi to celkem daří, alespoň podle ohlasů. Jak přistupujete k propagaci vy? Necháváte to na labelu nebo sami posíláte CD různě na recenze? Já si třeba alba, která mě opravdu baví, kupuji. Jak jste na tom vy? Jste také fanoušci, co rádi a často podporují své kolegy? Chodíte na koncerty? Paříte?

Váš blog a další jsou pro undergroundovou scénu zásadní. Bez časopisů a blogů by undergroundová scéna pravděpodobně neexistovala v dnešní podobě. Rád čtu undergroundové blogy. Je tam spousta zajímavých reportáží a rozhovorů. Rád také objevuji nové kapely.

Jsem také velkým fanouškem undergroundové hudby, kupuji si spoustu triček a nášivek. Někdy také desky. Je důležité podporovat undergroundovou scénu. Dělat vlastní hudbu je drahý koníček.

Pro naši pormotion máme podporu od vydavatelství, ale také sami posíláme CD do časopisů nebo na blogy.

Já i moji kamarádi a spoluhráči z kapely rádi chodíme na koncerty.


Na jednou stranu má dnes kapela spoustu možností, jak o sobě dát vědět, ale zase na druhou stranu, skupin je obrovské množství a fanoušci se v nich ztrácejí. Hodně lidí jen stahuje mp3 z internetu a místo koncertu raději plive jedovaté sliny na facebooku. Jak vás, jako CONVICTORS ovlivňují moderní technologie? Co si myslíš o stahování muziky, google metalistech, streamování muziky apod.?

Ano, platformy sociálních médií a internet jsou přínosem i zkázou. V porovnání s dřívějšími dobami je dobré mít tyto nástroje a platformy, na druhou stranu hudba sama o sobě ztratila hodnotu. Jak jsi zmínil, na scéně je nespočet kapel a každý se snaží prodat hudbu a shání koncerty. Pro scénu je elementární, že fanoušci navštěvují koncerty.

Osobně také často poslouchám hudbu online. Je to snadný způsob, jak poslouchat metal.

S oblibou se ptám muzikantů na to, co pro ně znamená death metal. Jak by jej definovali, jestli je pro ně spíše filozofií a životním stylem nebo „jen“ relaxem. Co znamená pro tebe? Jak jej vnímáš a prožíváš?

Z mého pohledu je metal obecně životní styl. Buď hudbu milujete, nebo nenávidíte. Často nosím metalová trička kapel, takže ano, pro mě je to životní styl.


Na závěr klasická, ale důležitá otázka. Co chystají CONVICTORS v nejbližších měsících? Kde vás můžeme vidět na koncertě?

Hledáme koncerty, především v Evropě. Ano, na tom pracujeme. Doufáme, že se nám podaří získat nějaké na rok 2023 a později na rok 2024.

A few questions - interview with death metal band from France - OLDSKULL.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

OLDSKULL began as a 3 piece band in 2003: Seb (vocals), Manu (Guitar) and Hervé (Drums). Around 2005 we recruited Damien on bass and we could play our first concert. Then Yann (Bass) joined us in 2006, thanks to his experience we were able to move forwards new composition and play a few gigs.

A four tracks demo was released in 2009.

Then, we have been searching for a little different way of composing to be more efficient.
We did a few good concerts such as the XTREME FEST in 2015, and even played with SKELETAL REMAINS at the Pavillons sauvages.

The band has not been dormant. We continued to compose songs, to deepen our style and way of playing.

Following a concert at the Club in Rodez in 2019 (A date shared with MERCYLESS, RITUALIZATION and SAVAGE ANNIHILATION), Nico joined the band as second guitarist.

It was a long time we thought about having 2 guitars in the band, to open new technical horizons to our compositions.

Beginning of 2023, release of the EP “The Defeat Of Humanity”, followed by a few concerts including « Une Nuit En Enfer » for the 20 years of the festival (Date shared with MISGIVINGS, CONVICTION and VENEFIXION).

We practice a death metal the old way and influenced by the 90’s.


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

The recording took place at the DISMALSOUND STUDIO, but Manu (Lead guitar) did a huge post recording work to arrive at the result of the Ep.

Knowing that “The Defeat Of Humanity“ is as a self-production meaning that Manu took many personnal time to achieve the musical part of this EP.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

A hundred copies were released on CD format , then Gabriel from Nihilistic Holocaust (Extreme Webzine label) proposed us to release the EP on cassette format, we accepted right away.

The EP is also available on Bandcamp in digital and streaming.


Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

Seb (vocals) is the main author of the lyrics that deal with some current concerns (ecological disaster, pandemic,human condition, and so on)

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

Nerull (friend) created our logo whereas Mimo (another friend) drew in pencil the EP’s cover that was finally arranged by a graphist.

Regarding social networks : Manu manages Oldskull’s Facebook account while Nico (rhythm guitar) manages Oldskull’s Bandcamp account.

We should admit not to be especially involved in social networks but we try to respond every request.


Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We have released this EP as a self-production, therefore everything is managed by ourselves at this time.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

OLDSKULL counts 5 members so this is as many different influences, however we all find ourselves on the golden era of Death metal from early 90's such as: Unleashed, Disincarnate, Hypocrisy, Luciferion, Bolt Thrower, Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Morgoth, Sinister, Napalm Death, Memoriam ,Cannibal Corpse, Grave, Benediction, Entombed, Deicide, Resurrection, Vader, Pestilence, Obituary, Malevolent Creation, Dismember, Gorguts, Asphyx, Demolition Hammer…

But also some good thrash: Protector, Possessed, Sepultura, Slayer…

We all have our own influences in other styles but Death metal remains OLDSKULL’s reason of existence.

One shouldn’t forget France also owns cult bands that released timeless death metal classics such as Loudblast, Mercyless, No Return, Agressor and Massacra.


Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

We are not the kind of guys that knock the doors to people we don’t know.

Based on that, we unfrequently canvassed some labels from underground and didn’t get any response, relaunching is not our cup of tea in these conditions ...

Finally, none of us takes care of it.

Gabriel from nihilistic holocaust contacted us for a tape release. this guy is such involved in the underground worship that we couldn't refuse his offer to release our EP on tape. We were already in contact with him for trading when we released the "death and metal" demo but obviously this demo was out of stock, due to our less of competence in promotioning our band. We would never be able to promote as much as Gabriel does, we are greatly gratefull to him for his job, enthusiasm, support and devotion to the underground scene and the bands he support!

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

It is really random, depending on opportunities we find and personnel constraints of each member of the band.

As of now we played four gigs in 2023, the last one was « Une Nuit En Enfer » for the 20 years of the festival (pretty good sound !).

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

In the close future : New compositions and a «video clip».

To play more concerts and to keep on progressing in group cohesion.

Today and tomorrow : To keep on offering a sincere death metal and all the more to perpetuate the death metal tradition!

The founding idea of OLDSKULL was and remains to play “traditional” Death metal in its original conception : sincerity and spontaneity.

Ave CHURCH OF THE DEAD! Greetings to the underground. I hope everything is fine with you. It should be because this year you have released a second long-play full-length album in your band's career. I have to admit it has literally blown my mind. It is dark, energic and as if it cuts by the sharp edge of the knife. I can hear from the record you did a really good job and you added a big portion of the talent, too. How do you perceive the new album in comparison to the previous one? Where did you want to move and in what are these two records different?

Church of the Dead: We feel that this album is heavier than the previous one, but also marks a clear shift away from our death metal roots more towards black metal vibes and more atmospheric horror movieque soundscapes, without forgetting the crust-punk influences that have been with us since the very beginning. One thing is that songs are far part stylistically from each other than on the previous one, that was more from the same mold throughout the first album. Which to us is a return to old ways of Black Sabbath-era albums that were not afraid to feature songs radically different from each other with still sounding like us.


„Beyond Death“ includes all attributes of good death metal. For me personally, it represents the record, which I really like to listen to. How did you produce it? How look the writing process of new material in the case of CHURCH OF THE DEAD?

Church of the Dead: We worked with the same producer Markus as with our first album, so way almost did everything the same way as before, but one thing that was different was the synth elements. On the first album we improvised a lot of stuff, specially in the soundscapes and synth department during the studio sessions. This time we had more solid ideas for those before we entered the studio, but not afraid to make changes on the fly if need be.

Who's signed the sound? I have to confirm that the sound literally kills. It keeps making me turn up the volume on the hi-fi tower. You have a sound that is harsh, raw and dark and animalistic at the same time, it feels analogue. What studio did you record in and how did it all work?

Church of the Dead: Markus Heinonen of Saarni Studios engineered and mixed the album and JB van der Wal (ex-Aborted) handled the mastering duties. Our raw sound live&the practice place is almost identical to the studio sound, and I like to believe we made the jobs of Markus and JB hopefully relatively easy. We always have had a very distinct guitar sound which I don’t think you hear anymore that much in metal nowadays that sets us apart. I can confirm that Marshall, Peavey and Orange tube amps were used on this album very much. Analogue is the way!


An integral part and a kind of extra bonus for fans today is a music CD (cassette, vinyl). You have released it on Redefining Darkness Records and it comes with a deadpan cover. Who is the author? How did you choose the theme and how does it relate to the music on the release?

Church of the Dead: Our covert art is by an Italian artist Roberto Toderico who for example did the latest Asphyx album cover as well. We knew him before and felt he was the right one for the job this time. In the cover art we have had church related themes before, but this time we get to display the Church of the Dead in its full g(l)ory.

I have been wandering the underground for over thirty years and I still go to Finland for music with certainty. I think we have a similar nature and taste when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and I monitor your scene carefully. Maybe I envy you a little, because we only have a few death metal bands that are worth it. How do you explain that death metal are doing so well in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels?

Church of the Dead: The Finnish death metal scene is having a second coming with a lot of younger newer bands and fans coming to the shows. Feels good and also bad not being the young guys anymore but luckily fans of new and old have found us and celebrate blasphemy with us. I think the secret is that there are so many bands in Finland that helps to cultivate an evil spirit to push the bands to make better and better albums when we go see each other live.


You play death metal influenced by, among other things, the old school. Today, the band can't avoid comparisons, but I would like to know how the idea to start CHURCH OF THE DEAD was born, who was and is your metal idol? Where do you want to move your band? Are you attracted to large foreign festivals, for example, are you willing to go on tour with a more famous band?

Church of the Dead: You can definitely hear the influence of a certain Swiss man in our music, specially his older project and I’d say he is our shared idol. Few other notable genres are of course Swedish Crust/Punk/Rock scene that can be heard in many of our more d-beat heavy songs. We are currently looking for the right fit to do a tour and have no issues sharing the stage with a more mainstream band.

When I started my blog six years ago, I had a vision that I would try to support bands that are not so much popular, or they are lost in underground. To let the world knows about them. I think I'm doing quite well, at least according to the responses. How do you approach the promotion of your music? Do you rely upon the label or do you send the CDs for various reviews by yourself? For example, I buy albums that I really enjoy. What about you? Are you also fans who often support your colleagues? Do you go to concerts?

Church of the Dead: With our previous albums we went DIY and mailing CD’s all around the world. With our current album since the label is US based, we of course cannot do this as much as we would like to. Some of us are still to this day very avid CD/Vinyl collectors and we keep buying and supporting our friends and fellow metal maniacs. The Helsinki scene is very tight and we have the pleasure to share the stage and go see our friends play very regularly. Underground festivals like Helsinki Death Fest are doing an excellent job keeping the scene alive.


On the one hand, today the new band has a lot of opportunities to make themselves more known, but on the other hand, there are a huge number of groups and the fans are getting lost in this big metal sea. A lot of people just download mp3s from the internet and instead of to visit the concert they prefer to spit poisonous saliva on Facebook. How do modern technologies affect you as CHURCH OF THE DEAD? What do you think about downloading music, google metalists, streaming music, etc.?

Church of the Dead: Analog is the way, we are a bit oldskool in this way, but naturally you have to have somekind of a presence in nowadays digital world. We don’t care how you consume your music but we like to put on a good vinyl and enjoy music loud from a pair of quality speakers instead of an iPhone at the back of the bus.

I like to ask the musicians what death metal means to them. How would they define it, whether it is more the philosophy and lifestyle thing for them or "just" relaxation? What does it mean for you? How do you perceive and experience it?

Church of the Dead: For us death metal music is more just about enjoying the heavier music and meeting with fellow metal heads. There’s no deeper philosophy or anything like that. We just try to make music that sounds good while being as heavy and grim as we can make it.


Finally, a classic but important question. What is CHURCH OF THE DEAD planning in the upcoming months? Where can we see you at the stage?

Church of the Dead: We are already busy making new music and preparing for a third album, we have currently no summer festival shows booked for this year sadly, so if you wanna see us play in your town, contact your local promoter!

Ave CHURCH OF THE DEAD! Zdravím do undergroundu. Doufám, že je u vás vše v pořádku. Mělo by, máte na kontě letos druhé dlouhohrající skvělé album své kariéry. Musím se přiznat, že mě doslova přikovalo na zeď. Je temné, energické, řeže ostrou hranou nože. Je hodně slyšet, že jste odvedli skvělou práci a taky velká porce talentu. Jak vnímáš novou desku v souvislosti s vaší prvotinou? Kam jak jste se chtěli posunout a v čem jsou podle tebe nahrávky odlišné?

Church of the Dead: Cítíme, že toto album je těžší než to předchozí, ale zároveň znamená jasný posun od našich deathmetalových kořenů směrem k blackmetalovým vibracím a atmosférickým hororovým zvukovým krajinám, aniž bychom zapomněli na crust-punkové vlivy, které nás provázejí od samého počátku. Jednou z věcí je, že písně jsou od sebe stylově daleko dál než na předchozím albu, které bylo po celou první desku spíš ze stejného těsta. Což je pro nás návrat do starých kolejí alb z éry Black Sabbath, které se nebály obsahovat písně radikálně odlišné od sebe, přičemž stále zněly jako my.


„Beyond Death“ v sobě obsahuje všechny atributy dobrého death metalu. Pro mě osobně se jedná o desku, ke které se hrozně rád vracím. Jakým způsobem vznikala? Jak skládají nový materiál CHURCH OF THE DEAD?

Church of the Dead: Pracovali jsme se stejným producentem Markusem jako na našem prvním albu, takže jsme dělali skoro všechno stejně jako předtím, ale jedna věc byla jiná, a to syntezátorové prvky. Na prvním albu jsme během studiových sezení hodně improvizovali, speciálně v oblasti zvukové krajiny a synťáků. Tentokrát jsme pro ně měli před vstupem do studia pevnější nápady, ale nebáli jsme se dělat změny za pochodu, když to bylo potřeba.

Kdo je podepsán pod zvukem? Musím potvrdit, že zvuk doslova zabíjí. Pořád mě to nutí na hi-fi věži přidávat volume. Máte zvuk, který je krutý, surový a zároveň temný a živočišný, působí analogově. V jakém studiu jste nahrávali a jak vše probíhalo?

Church of the Dead: Markus Heinonen ze Saarni Studios se postaral o produkci a mix alba a JB van der Wal (ex-Aborted) o mastering. Náš syrový zvuk naživo&nacvičeně je téměř totožný se studiovým zvukem a rád věřím, že jsme Markusovi a JB snad relativně usnadnili práci. Vždycky jsme měli velmi výrazný kytarový zvuk, který podle mě už v dnešním metalu není tolik slyšet, což nás odlišuje. Mohu potvrdit, že na tomto albu byly velmi často použity lampové zesilovače Marshall, Peavey a Orange. Analog je správná cesta!


Nedílnou součástí a jakýmsi bonusem navíc je pro fanoušky dnes hudební CD (kazeta, vinyl). Vy jste jej vydali u Redefining Darkness Records a je opatřeno mrtvolným obalem. Kdo je jeho autorem? Jak jste motiv vybírali a jak souvisí s hudbou na novince?

Church of the Dead: Autorem obalu je italský umělec Roberto Toderico, který je například autorem obalu posledního alba Asphyx. Znali jsme ho už dřív a cítili jsme, že tentokrát je pro tuto práci ten pravý. Na obalech jsme už dříve měli motivy související s církví, ale tentokrát se nám podařilo zobrazit kostel mrtvých v celé jeho g(l)orii.

Toulám se podsvětím již přes třicet let a do Finska si chodím pro muziku vlastně na jistotu. Myslím, že máme podobnou náturu i vkus, co se týká metalu. Mám vaše kapely hodně rád a pečlivě sleduji vaši scénu. Možná vám i trošku závidím, my máme u nás jen pár death metalových smeček, které stojí za to. Čím si to vysvětluješ, že zrovna u vás se death metalu tolik daří? Jak vnímáš vaši scénu, fanoušky, labely?

Church of the Dead: Finská deathmetalová scéna zažívá svůj druhý příchod a na koncerty přichází spousta mladších a novějších kapel a fanoušků. Je to dobrý a zároveň špatný pocit, že už nejsme ti mladí, ale naštěstí si nás noví i staří fanoušci našli a oslavují s námi rouhání. Myslím, že tajemství spočívá v tom, že ve Finsku je tolik kapel, což pomáhá pěstovat zlého ducha, který kapely tlačí k tomu, aby dělaly lepší a lepší alba, když se chodíme dívat na koncerty.


Hrajete death metal ovlivněný starou školou. Dnes se vlastně kapela nemůže vyhnout srovnání, mě by ale zajímalo, jak vlastně vznikl nápad založit CHURCH OF THE DEAD, kdo byl a je vaším vzorem a kam vaši kapelu chcete posunout? Lákají vás třeba velké zahraniční festivaly, jste ochotni vyrazit na turné s nějakou slavnější smečkou?

Church of the Dead: V naší hudbě je určitě slyšet vliv jistého Švýcara, zejména jeho staršího projektu, a řekl bych, že je to náš společný idol. Několik dalších pozoruhodných žánrů je samozřejmě švédská crustová/punková/rocková scéna, která je slyšet v mnoha našich d-beatovějších heavy skladbách. V současné době hledáme vhodného kandidáta na turné a nemáme problém sdílet pódium s mainstreamovější kapelou.

Když jsem před šesti lety zakládal svoje stránky, měl jsem vizi, že se budu snažit podporovat kapely, které podle mě nejsou tolik na očích. Dát o nich vědět světu. Myslím, že se mi to celkem daří, alespoň podle ohlasů. Jak přistupujete k propagaci vy? Necháváte to na labelu nebo sami posíláte CD různě na recenze? Já si třeba alba, která mě opravdu baví, kupuji. Jak jste na tom vy? Jste také fanoušci, co rádi a často podporují své kolegy? Chodíte na koncerty? Paříte?

Church of the Dead: S našimi předchozími alby jsme se vydali cestou DIY a rozesílali CD po celém světě. S naším aktuálním albem, protože vydavatelství sídlí v USA, to samozřejmě nemůžeme dělat tak, jak bychom chtěli. Někteří z nás jsou dodnes velmi vášnivými sběrateli CD/Vinylů a stále kupujeme a podporujeme naše přátele a kolegy metalové maniaky. Helsinská scéna je velmi těsná a my máme to potěšení sdílet pódium a chodit na koncerty našich přátel velmi pravidelně. Undergroundové festivaly jako Helsinki Death Fest odvádějí skvělou práci a udržují scénu naživu.


Na jednou stranu má dnes začínající kapela spoustu možností, jak o sobě dát vědět, ale zase na druhou stranu, skupin je obrovské množství a fanoušci se v nich ztrácejí. Hodně lidí jen stahuje mp3 z internetu a místo koncertu raději plive jedovaté sliny na facebooku. Jak vás, jako CHURCH OF THE DEAD ovlivňují moderní technologie? Co si myslíš o stahování muziky, google metalistech, streamování muziky apod.?

Church of the Dead: Analogová je cesta, v tomto směru jsme trochu oldskool, ale samozřejmě musíte mít nějakou přítomnost v dnešním digitálním světě. Je nám jedno, jakým způsobem konzumujete hudbu, ale my si rádi pustíme dobrý vinyl a vychutnáme si hudbu nahlas z pár kvalitních reproduktorů místo iPhonu vzadu v autobuse.

S oblibou se ptám muzikantů na to, co pro ně znamená death metal. Jak by jej definovali, jestli je pro ně spíše filozofií a životním stylem nebo „jen“ relaxem. Co znamená pro tebe? Jak jej vnímáš a prožíváš?

Church of the Dead: Pro nás je death metalová hudba spíše jen o tom, abychom si užili těžší hudbu a setkali se s ostatními metalisty. Není v tom žádná hlubší filozofie nebo něco podobného. Prostě se snažíme dělat hudbu, která zní dobře a zároveň je tak těžká a ponurá, jak jen to jde.


Na závěr klasická, ale důležitá otázka. Co chystají CHURCH OF THE DEAD v nejbližších měsících? Kde vás můžeme vidět na koncertě?

Church of the Dead: Už teď jsme zaneprázdněni tvorbou nové hudby a přípravou třetího alba.V současné době bohužel nemáme na letošní rok domluvené žádné letní festivalové koncerty, takže pokud nás chcete vidět hrát ve vašem městě, kontaktujte místního promotéra!
