Nad starým hřbitovem krouží hejno krkavců. Další pohřeb do hlíny, další zbytky potravy. Jdu zrovna kolem a musím kapele BENEDICTION poděkovat, že mě provází celý můj death metalový život. Tahle země dávno není pro starý a já se zrovna cítím zase mladý. Poslouchám totiž nové album "Scriptures" od britské legendy.
Byl jsem na posledním koncertě kapely s Davem Huntem za mikrofonem na festivalu SYMBOLIC v Čechách a neskutečně jsem si vystoupení užil, díky za jeho skvělou práci. Vrátil se ale můj oblíbený zpěvák Dave Ingram a kapela působí, i přes svoji dlouhou existenci, jako politá mrtvou vodou. Tady se hraje starý, valivý, drtivý, dřevní, zničující death metal. S parádním prašivým zvukem. Jasně, všechno jsme již někde slyšeli, v současnosti tvoří mladí úplně jinou muziku, ale já jsem neskutečně spokojený. "Scriptures" totiž řeže přímo do živého, hrozně dobře se poslouchá a dodává mi pradávnou sílu a temnou energii.
Stejně si myslím, že se death metal musí hrát srdcem. My fanoušci to poznáme. V BENEDICTION opět zafungovala vzájemná chemie mezi muzikanty. Z desky je cítit, že byla nahrána s nadšením a odhodláním. Jsem moc rád, že se legendární Britové vyhnuli různým, dnes tolik častým experimentům. Hrají tak, jak umějí nejlépe. Staré hrobníky zaplať Satan novým kouskům nenaučíte a je to jen a jen dobře. Nad hřbitovem krouží hejno krkavců a já přidávám volume. Přesně takhle jsem si nové album představoval a moje představy byly naplněny. Britští bardi nakopali zadek všem pochybovačům a zase mě zavřeli do staré hrobky. Zároveň si zachovali rebelii a neurvalost, které jsem u nich vždy obdivoval. Lámou se zde kosti, odtrhává syrové maso zkaženými zuby. Krkavci potřebují nakrmit a podobný death metal je pro ně více než vhodný. Stárnout se musí umět se ctí, kapely s podobnou historií to mají hodně těžké, ale BENEDICTION na své návratové nahrávce obstáli se s ctí. "Scriptures" je deskou jak vystřiženou ze starých dobrých časů. Kapela stále dokáže napsat skvělé songy. Rád bych poděkoval za pozvání, na tomhle hřbitově se ještě dlouhou dobu zdržím. Baví mě riffy ušpiněné thrashem, vokál, způsob, jakým utíkají bicí. Old school death metal, ostrý jako břitva! Krkavci vědí své.

I was at the last concert of the band with Dave Hunt at the SYMBOLIC festival in the Czech republic and I really enjoyed the performance, thanks for his great work. But my favorite singer Dave Ingram has returned and the band, despite its long existence, seems to be drenched by dead water. Old, rolling, crushing, wooden, destructive death metal is played here. With a great dusty sound. Sure, we've heard everything somewhere, the young are currently making completely different music, but I'm incredibly happy. "Scriptures" cuts directly into the live, it is very well listenable and gives me ancient strength and dark energy.
I still think that death metal has to be played with the heart. We fans know it. In BENEDICTION, the mutual chemistry between the musicians worked again. You can feel from the album that it was recorded with enthusiasm and determination. I am very glad that the legendary British avoided various experiments that are so common today. They have to be able to age with honor, bands with a similar history find it very difficult, but BENEDICTION survived with honor on their return record. Ostré čepele nožů, pomalu pronikající do těla. Krev stříká všude kolem a oběť křičí i přes zakrytá ústa. Filozofie založená na umírání, zvrácený vrah, který podlehl mylné představě, že očistí tenhle svět. Miláček médií, celá kauza je od začátku zvrácená. Pozůstalí jsou zcela mimo hru. Hlavní jsou peníze a úchylný úsměv obžalovaného na kameru. Detailní popis jeho činů, trest smrti byl dávno zrušený. Utíkám raději k hudbě, tam mám alespoň jistotu, že je vše v pořádku.
Brutální death metal v podání holandské legendy DISAVOWED je propracovaný a úderný, stejně jako činy lidské bestie. Kapela hraje tento styl v jeho klasické, tradiční podobě a opět jasně dokazuje, že perfektně rozumí svému řemeslu. Novinka "Revocation of the Fallen" je ostrá, nekompromisní, surová a nepostrádá tolik důležitou atmosféru plnou násilí. Připomíná mi dobrý horor, ve kterém nakonec všichni zemřou. Jak taky jinak.
Mám rád pravý, ryzí brutální death metal a tak mi novinka "Revocation of the Fallen" sedla perfektně do noty. Skladby odsýpají jako lavina, postupně gradují a zadírají se mi pomalu pod kůži. DISAVOWED nijak neexperimentují a je to jen a jen dobře. Je na ně spolehnutí, stejně jako na další zprávu v černé kronice, jako na další rozhovor s vrahem. Líbí se mi mohutný poctivý zvuk, mocný vokál i spousta zajímavých momentů, které si na desce vyloženě užívám. Pánové zúročili své dlouholeté zkušenosti a přidali pověstnou černou jiskru navíc. Album se poslouchá samo a zároveň se k němu opravdu rád vracím. Je úderem kladiva do hlavy, bodnutím ostrého nože, který vám pronikne do břicha. Navíc smrdí jako rozkládající se tělo. Dívám se přes závoj z krve. Chci si další a další skladbu narvat pod tlakem do uší. Přidávám volume, užívám si pestrou paletu zvrácených nálad. Nikde nic nepřebývá, nikde nic nechybí, všechno je přesně takové, jako má být. Nechutné, bolestivé, surové. DISAVOWED nám letos předkládají k dokonalosti vybroušený brutálně death metalový diamant, doběla ohlodanou kost. Dokonalá smrt!

The new record "Revocation of the Fallen" is sharp, uncompromising, raw and does not lack such an important atmosphere full of violence. It reminds me of a good horror movie in which everyone eventually dies. How else.
I like real, pure brutal death metal, so the new album "Revocation of the Fallen" fitted me perfectly. The songs pour off like an avalanche, gradually graduate and slowly get under my skin. DISAVOWED doesn't experiment at all and it's just fine. You can depend on them, as well as on another report in the Black Chronicle, or like on another conversation with the killer. I like the powerful honest sound, powerful vocal and a lot of interesting moments that I definitely enjoy on the record. The gentlemen took advantage of their many years of experience and added the legendary black spark. The listening of the album is easy and at the same time, I really like coming back to it. This album is like a hammer blow to the head, a stab with a sharp knife that penetrates your abdomen. In addition, it stinks like a decomposing body. I look through the veil of blood. I want to put more and more songs into my ears under pressure. I add volume and enjoy a variety of perverted moods. Nothing is left anywhere, nothing is missing anywhere, everything is exactly as it should be. Disgusting, painful, raw. Ahoj Dave,
zdravím do Dánska a moc děkuji, že sis na nás našel čas. Zrovna nedávno jsme se s kamarády v hospodě bavili o nejlepších death metalových zpěvácích a tvoje jméno jsme skloňovali velmi často. Co pro tebe vlastně znamená death metal? Je to životní styl, náročný koníček, odpočinek? Nebo nutnost, radost ze samotné hudby jako takové?
Děkuji za rozhovor a zdravím z Dánska. Death metal je součástí mého života už tak dlouho, že je skutečně obtížné ho nějakým způsobem kategorizovat. Když už bych to měl udělat, myslím, že by se dalo říct, že je to spíše životní styl než jen koníček. Pro mě je to určitě nutnost. Nechci ani pomyslet na to, že nebudu produkovat nějakou formu hudby nebo něco jiného. Vím, že ten den přijde, ale ten den tady zatím rozhodně ještě není.
Jsi již ve věku, kdy bys mohl žít už jen z toho, co jsi za svůj život vytvořil. Ale ty pořád pracuješ, stále se objevuješ na nových deskách. Spoustě zpěváků za ty roky „křičení“ odejdou hlasivky nebo se stanou hořkou karikaturou, ale z tebe mám pocit, že máš pořád „tah na branku“ a navíc dobrou náladu? Fotky, na kterých se usmíváš, na festivalech chodíš mezi fanoušky, jsi pohodář. Kde prosím tě bereš tolik pozitivní energie? Neměl bys pro mě nějaký recept? Jsem o pár let mladší a někdy chodím v pátek domů utahaný a nevrlý jako starý pes.
Kdybych teď měl přestat, byl bych spokojený s tím, co všechno jsem udělal. Ale přestat tvořit hudbu je pro mě nemožné. Budu se snažit pokračovat tak dlouho, jak jen budu moct. Je pravdou, že mnoho zpěváků si odrovnalo hlasivky a je rozdíl je slyšet v jejich individuálních stylech od minulosti do současnosti. Proč to moje neudělaly? No, musíte si uvědomit, že jsem se distancoval nějaký čas od hraní živě ...a to přesně na 10 let. Nahrával jsem alba a dělal další projekty - stejně jako moji on-line show pro Metal Breakfast Radio - ale nebyl jsem neustále na turné. Také jsem přestal kouřit, což mým hlasivkám a celkovému zdraví hodně prospělo. Občas jsem také nevrlý pes, ale snažím se nebýt. Hlavně s fanoušky, protože je radost se s nimi potkávat na koncertech, vypít si s nimi pivo a zjistit, jak je to se scénami v jejich zemích. Na fotografiích se usmívám, protože se prostě dobře bavím.
Kolem zrovna probíhá karanténa, u nás v Čechách se nepořádají žádné koncerty, spousta lidí je zavřených doma. Je to jak nějaká apokalypsa z hororových filmů. Ty pracuješ v Dánském institutu pro výzkum rakoviny, jak koronavirus vstoupil do tvého života? Pro nás fanoušky je to hrozně těžké, živá vystoupení jsou pro nás kořením života a dělají podle mého metal metalem. Protože naživo se odděluje zrno od plev, poznají se jak opravdoví fanoušci, tak i kapely, které to myslí vážně a srdcem. Jak současnou situaci zvládáš?
Doposud virus nevstoupil do mého života, kromě karantény, kterou jsme tu v Dánsku měli. Právě teď se věci rozvolňují a pomalu se vracíme k normálu. Stále existují pravidla, která je třeba dodržovat a ty tu budou ještě dlouhou dobu, dokud nebude vytvořena vakcína, ale je to nutné zlo. Bohužel koncerty byly přesunuty až na příští rok a my musíme počkat. Uvidíme, jestli ke konci tohoto roku něco bude - ale já o tom velmi pochybuji. Obávám se, že nás zasáhne druhá vlna infekce a smete další koncerty ... a bohužel také mnohem více lidí.
Když jsem viděl na festivalu Symbolic Open Air poslední vystoupení BENEDICTION s Davem Huntem, bylo mi líto, že v kapele končí. Kamarádka dělala hrozné tajnosti s tím, kdo bude nástupce. Tvůj návrat myslím spousty lidí překvapil, i když, vlastně moc ne. Víš, co se říká? Dvakrát do stejné řeky nevstoupíš. Každopádně moc gratuluji a těšíme se na novou hudbu od BENEDICTION. Už máte něco připraveno? Můžeš nám prozradit nějaké novinky? Jak vlastně tvůj návrat probíhal?
Ano, byl jsem to já, kdo hlásal zvěst „nevstoupíš dvakrát do stejné řeky“, když jsem zveřejnil, že to nebudu já na svém facebookovém profilu i stránkách. Ale to už jsem pár měsíců naznačoval. Bylo to vzrušující, když mi volali, když mi Dan (Bate, basák) poslal zprávu a zeptal se, jestli bych se mohl spojit s Darrenem (Brookes, kytara) ohledně spolupráce. Původně to mělo být dočasné, protože v té době zpěvák Dave Hunt měl být mimo a věnovat se jeho studiím, ale brzy bylo jasné, že tomu chce věnovat více času než kapele, takže jsem byl požádán, abych se připojil trvale. Než jsem mluvil s Darrenem, moje žena a syn mi řekli, že kdyby mě požádali, abych se znovu připojil, měl bych určitě říct ano. Takže jsem to udělal. Bylo to dlouhou dobu přísně střežené tajemství, dokonce i když jsem jel do Birminghamu, abych s nimi zkoušel.
Poslední roky se mi dostaly do rukou vynikající desky od kapel jako ECHELON, DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN, URSINNE, JUST BEFORE DAWN. Chodily mi na recenze promo nahrávky od indických Transcending Obscurity Records a jejich šéfa Kunala Choksiho a já si rovnou objednával i originální CD. Tohle je přesně death metal v podobě, v jaké jej mám rád. Jak vlastně k tvojí spolupráci s Roggou Johanssonem, Jonny Peterssonem a dalšími došlo? Nechystáte něco nového? Co a jak vás spojilo dohromady?
Určitě jsou tady plány na nová alba a nové projekty. Právě teď to zřejmě vypadá na nové album BENEDICTION a další budou následovat: Hellfrost And Fire - “Fire, Frost And Hell” (debutové album), Troikadon - “Triumvirate Of Death”, Down Among The Dead Men – zatím bez názvu (čtvrté album) Echelon – zatím bez názvu (třetí album), Ursinne - “Rise With The Behemoth” (druhé album). Tyto projekty vznikly díky tomu, že jsme se všichni navzájem kontaktovali kvůli své lásce k hudbě tohoto žánru. Chtěli jsme experimentovat s tím, co jsme znali a vyjádřit své umění různými způsoby.
Současná doba je skvělá v tom, že si poslechneš novou hudbu dopředu, v dobré kvalitě a pak až se rozhodneš, co si koupíš, koho podpoříš. Jenže to má i druhou stránku, kapel je šíleně moc a je těžké si udělat filtr. Slavná jména samozřejmě táhnou, ale pro mladé je to myslím pořád těžké. Podle jakého klíče si vybíráš kapely ty? A teď nemyslím jenom třeba pro tvé hostování, ale třeba i pro poslech. Máš ve své sbírce nějaký současný objev, nějakou novou smečku, u které sis řekl – super, tohle je přesně hudba, kterou mám rád?
Vždycky mě zajímal a mám rád švédský D-beat styl, takže každá kapela, která takto zní, ode mě dostane palec nahoru, bez ohledu na to, odkud jsou. Ale po pravdě, pokud je metal napsán od srdce, a ne z nějaké pompézní arogance, pak jsem to určitě slyšel a neuniklo to mé sbírce. Také představuji novou hudbou v mé show na Metal Breakfast Radiu ... ale více o tom v další otázce, že?
Máš rozhlasovou show v Metal Breakfast Radio. Jak se cítíš jako moderátor? Je jasné, že si zvyklý vystupovat před publikem, ale tohle je něco jiného. Musí to být zajímavá práce, ale jako každá má svá úskalí. Co pro tebe bylo v rádiu nejtěžší?
Opravdu to nebylo těžké. Pouze první dny, když jsme začínali (před 12ti lety!), když jsme neměli vůbec žádné posluchače. Byl to začátek první vlny podcastů, to byla cesta, kterou jsme původně šli - a stále je jako takové vydáváme i v dnešní době. Show publikovalo několik on-line rozhlasových stanic, kterým se líbila naše originalita a humor, takže jsme se velmi rychle stali populárními. V současné době jsem velmi zaneprázdněn a už nemůžeme produkovat tolik show, kolik bychom chtěli ... plus navíc teď máme karanténu, takže nemáme šanci se potkat a show nahrát. Mám ale několik epizod připravených, takže tento víkend odvysíláme jednu, protože už je to nějaká doba, co byl vysílán nějaký nový obsah. Je to zábava a já se k tomu můžu vrátit na plný úvazek, jakmile skončí všechny kapely. Je to perfektní plán na důchod!
Musíš být hodně zaměstnaný muž. Práce v institutu, rádio, BENEDICTION a spousta dalších aktivit. Jak vlastně odpočívá Dave Ingram? Zbývá ti čas třeba na filmy, seriály? Někde jsem četl, že máš jako já rád Douglase Adamse, Arthura C. Clarka a samozřejmě Dr. Who!
Moje práce je taková, že sedím 3 hodiny denně v kanceláři s notebookem. V současné době doháním práci pro kapelu (jako je tento rozhovor!), když bylo třeba, psal jsem texty a hudbu. Čas také využívám k editaci své rozhlasové show a také ke sledování některých televizních pořadů. O víkendech ponocuji, abych se mohl podívat na filmy, takže jsem ve svém volném čase vytížen. Přál bych si, abych měl více času na dokončení svých vlastních úkolů. Den na to všechno nemá dost hodin! Ačkoli musím říct, že mě brzy čeká další operace na mé druhé kyčli. Také je potřeba ji vyměnit, takže nebudu moct chvíli chodit a tak budu mít více času na své projekty.
Po tvém příchodu do Dánska si působil v kapele DOWNLORD. Vydali jste ale jen jedno album? Na Metal Archives je u statusu napsáno split-up. Jak si to mám vysvětlit? Bude ještě někdy nějaká nová hudba, nové CD? Mě váš death metal opravdu moc bavil.
Momentálně není v plánu žádný nový DOWNLORD. Do budoucna možná uvažujeme o opětovném přehrání alba - nebo určitých skladeb z něj, protože současná technologie nám umožňuje pokročilejší zvuk. Vydali jsme naše dvě dema na EP „Grind Trials“ a krátce poté album „Random Dictionary of the Damned“. Je to zvláštní, procházel jsem některými starými CD a našel jsem naše dema na CD. Stále jich mám spoustu, obyčejný bílý obal s potiskem na CD. Ani nevím, jestli po té době ještě hrají. Myslím, že bych to měl zkontrolovat a pak zjistit, jestli by je někdo chtěl.
Když jsem dělal rozhovor s Karlem Willettsem z vynikajících MEMORIAM, tak řekl: „Viděl jsem v průběhu let spoustu kapel experimentovat s novým zvukem a nakonec to má spíš tendenci odradit fanoušky. Memoriam bude mít vždy na sto procent kořeny v oldschool death metalu“. Tahle věta se mi zaryla hluboko do paměti. Uvědomil jsem si, že na starém death metalu ten prašivý, shnilý a chladný zvuk miluju. Každá stará kapela lze poznat během několika prvních tónů. Když slyším některé současné moderní brutal technické progresivní death metalové smečky, tak už tomu nějak nerozumím. Naživo vydržím vždycky jen pár skladeb a pak se nudím. Působí na mě často jen jako partička jazzmanů, která se přijela předvést, jak umí skvěle komplikovaně hrát…ale abych se dostal k otázce – jak vnímáš moderní trendy v death metalu? Líbí se ti nějaké kapely?
Tohle bude krátká odpověď. Neposlouchám moc moderní death metal, pokud nemá OSDM zvuk. Kapely, které se snaží experimentovat, mě vůbec nezajímají. Dejte mi OSDM nebo vypadněte!
Asi si už někde vysvětloval, proč si opustil Velkou Británii a odstěhoval se do Dánska. Mě by ale spíš zajímalo, co říkáš na tamní death metalovou scénu. Já znám z novější doby kapely jako PHRENELITH, SULPHUROUS, UNDERGANG, BAEST, DEIQUISITOR. No a pak mám hrozně moc rád thrashové ARTILLERY a HATESPHERE. S posledně jmenovanými jsem dělal i rozhovory a kapely se shodly v tom, že Dánsko nemá příliš míst, kde by se dal hrát underground, případně death metal. V tomhle má podle mě Británie výhodu, je tam spousty klubů, festivalů, hospod. Jak vnímáš dánskou scénu?
V Dánsku je spousta vynikajících undergroundových death metalových kapel. Rozhodně bych dal UNDERGANG na jejich vrchol. Spousty kapel byly bohužel mnohými přehlíženy. Chtěl bych říct, že by lidé měli podporovat podceňovanou dánskou scénu. Kapely z minulosti, například DETEST, také makají na novém albu. (Něco jsem slyšel a můžu vám říci, že to bude vražedné!) Kdo ví ... možná, že nějaká kapela s názvem DOWNLORD do toho zase taky praští. V současné době existuje vice míst, kde je možné hrát dánský underground živě. Scéna zde opět nabývá na síle.
Jsi v death metalu legenda, máš za sebou spoustu skvěle odvedené práce. Máš ale ještě nějaký sen? Třeba turné s oblíbenou kapelou nebo sdílet se svým vzorem pódium? Zazpívat si třeba já nevím s AUTOPSY? Má David Ingram nějaké nesplněné sny?
Plním si spoustu svých snů tak, jak jsem to činil i dříve. Jeden z mých snů? Vyskytnout se v epizodě Dr. Who. Téměř jsem tam byl v roce 2015…tehdy jsem se kamarádil s hudebním skladatelem show (Murray Gold). Řekl jsem mu, že jestli někdy bude potřebovat nějaký growl, tak se mi stačí ozvat. Řekl mi, že to bude potřebovat velmi brzy, ale nakonec to udělal Corey Taylor ze SLIPKNOT. Chápu proč, protože je známější než já, ale bylo to velké zklamání.
Jako zpěvák zpíváš texty, se kterými se musíš ztotožnit. Nebo alespoň tak já slyším tvůj hlas. Že věříš tomu, co zpíváš. Jsou pro tebe texty hodně důležité? Odmítl jsi třeba nějaký? A píšeš i svoje? Co já jsem dohledal, tak myslím, že jsi napsal něco jen k albu od URSINNE, nebo se pletu?
Texty jsou pro mě velmi důležité a musím věřit tomu, co zpívám. Obvykle je to v pohodě, protože si je sám píšu. Ale byly chvíle, kdy jsem zpíval texty někoho jiného a nemohl jsem do nich vložit svůj hlas. Byly to obvykle kapely, které mě požádaly, abych nahrál hostující vokály, nikoli kapely, ke kterým jsem se v minulosti připojil. (Jsem stále k dispozici pro hostující vokály, ale budete teď muset nejprve mluvit s mým agentem.)

Interview with legendary death metal vocalist - DAVE INGRAM, thank you!

Hi Dave, hello to Denmark and thank you so much for your time. We recently talked with friends in a pub about the best death metal singers and we used your name very often. What does death metal actually mean to you? Is it a lifestyle, a demanding hobby, a rest? Or necessity, the joy of music itself?
Many thanks for the interview, and Denmark sends greetings back to you. Death Metal has been a part of my life for so long that it’s actually become difficult to categorise it in any manner. Though if I have to say so, then I guess that one could say it is more like a lifestyle than simply a hobby. For me it’s most certainly a necessity. I don’t ever want to think of not producing some form of music or other. I know a day will come but that day is certainly not here yet.
You are already at the age when you could live only on what you have created in your life. But you're still working, you're still appearing on new records. A lot of the singers will destroy their vocal cords during those years of "screaming" or become a bitter caricature, but I feel that you still have a "goal move" and you are in a good mood? The photos you smile at, you go among the fans at festivals, you're cool. Where do you get so much positive energy from, please? Wouldn't you have a recipe for me? I'm a few years younger and sometimes I go home on Friday as tired and grumpy as an old dog.
If I were to stop now I would be happy with what I have done. But stopping making music is NOT an option for me. I aim to continue for as long as I can. Indeed, a lot of singers have ruined their voices, and the difference can be heard in their individual styles from the past to the present. Why has mine not done that? Well, you have to remember that I took some time away from performing live…10 years to be exact. I recorded albums, and did other projects - as well as my online show, Metal Breakfast Radio - but I wasn’t constantly touring. I also quit smoking which was a great help to my voice and overall health. As for not being bitter…well I can be a grumpy dog a times myself, but I try not to be. More so with fans these days, as it is a joy to meet them at gigs, drink a beer with them, and find out how the scene is in their respective countries. I smile in photos because I’m having such a good time.
There is a quarantine around us, there are no concerts in the Czech Republic, a lot of people are locked up at home. It's like an apocalypse from a horror movie. You work at the Danish Cancer Research Institute, how did corona-virus enter your life? It's very difficult for us - fans, live performances are the spice of our lives in my opinion. Because the grain is separated from the chaff, real fans and bands who are serious and heartfelt will get to know each other. How do you manage the current situation?
So far, the virus hasn’t entered my life, besides the quarantine we had here in Denmark. Right now things are easing off and we are slowly getting back to normal. There are still rules to follow, and their will be for a long time, until a vaccine is produced, but it is a necessary evil. Sadly concerts have all been moved until next year and we have to wait to see if there will be any towards the end of this year - but I very much doubt it. I fear a second wave of infection will hit, and wipe out even more gigs…and, sadly, a lot more people.
When I saw the last BENEDICTION performance with Dave Hunt at the Symbolic Open Air festival, I was sorry that he was ending in the band. The friend kept terrible secrets with who would be the successor. I think your return surprised a lot of people, though, not really. Do you know what they say? You will not enter the same river twice. Anyway, congratulations and we look forward to new music from BENEDICTION. Do you have anything ready yet? Can you tell us some news? How did your return happen?
Yes, it was me that started the rumour about “not swimming in the same river” as I posted that it would not be me on my Facebook profile and pages. BUT I was hinting at it for some months. It was exciting to receive the call. Dan (Bate, bassist) messaged me online and asked if I could get in touch with Darren (Brookes, guitar) about working together. Originally it was going to be temporary, as then vocalist Dave Hunt was going to be away working on his studies, but it soon became clear he wanted to commit more time to that than to the band, so I was asked to rejoin permanently. Before I spoke to Darren, my wife and son told me that if I was asked to rejoin then I should definitely say yes. So I did. We kept it a closely guarded secret for a long time, even when I went over to Birmingham to rehearse with them.
In recent years, I have received excellent records from bands such as ECHELON, DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN, URSINNE, JUST BEFORE DAWN. I received for reviews promo recordings from the Indian Transcending Obscurity Records and their boss Kunal Choksi, and I also ordered the original CD. This is exactly death metal in the form I love. How did your collaboration create with Rogga Johansson, Jonny Petersson and others? Are you planning something new? What and how those connections happened?
There are definitely plans for new albums and new projects. Right now there will obviously be the new Benediction album, plus there will be the following:
Hellfrost And Fire - “Fire, Frost And Hell” (debut album)
Troikadon - “Triumvirate Of Death” (full-length album)
Down Among The Dead Men - as yet untitled 4th album
Echelon - as yet untitled 3rd album
Ursinne - “Rise With The Behemoth” (second album)
These projects came to be due to all us guys contacting each other over our love for the music of this genre. We wanted to experiment with what we knew and express our art in different ways.
Nowadays, it's great that you listen to new music in advance, in good quality, and then you decide what to buy, who you will support. But it has another side, the bands are insanely too many and it's hard to make a filter. Of course, famous names rule, but I think it's still hard for young people. According to which key do you choose the bands? And now I don't think just for your hosting, but also for listening. Do you have a current discovery in your collection, a new band when you said - „great, this is exactly the music I like“!?
I have always had a lot of interest and love for the Swedish D-beat style, so any band who sounds like that will get a thumbs up from me, regardless of where they are from. But in truth, if the metal is written from the heart, and not some pompous arrogance, then I will most certainly have an ear for it in my collection. I also get introduced to new music on my show, Metal Breakfast Radio…but more on that in the next question, right?
You have a radio show at Metal Breakfast Radio. How do you feel as a moderator? It's clear you're used to performing in front of an audience, but this is something else. It must be an interesting job, but like everyone else it has its pitfalls. What was the hardest thing for you at the radio?
It wasn’t hard, really. Only when starting out in the early days of it (12 years ago!) when we had no listeners at all. It was the beginning of the first wave of podcasts so that was the way we originally went - and we still release it as such nowadays. There were several online radio stations that syndicated the show because they loved the originality and the humour of it, so we became very popular quite quickly. These days I am very busy and we can no longer produce shows as much as we want to…plus we now have the quarantine so there’s no chance for us to meet up and record a show. I have some episodes ready to use so I will put one out this weekend, as it has been a little while since any new content was aired. It’s a fun thing to do and I can always go back to it full-time once the bands are all done. It will make the perfect retirement plan!
You must be a very busy man. Work at the institute, radio, BENEDICTION and many other activities. How is Dave Ingram actually resting? Do you have time left for movies and series, for example? I read somewhere that you like Douglas Adams, Arthur C. Clark, and of course Dr. Who!
My job is such that I get 3 yours a day sitting in the office using my laptop. It is in these times that I catch up with band work (such as this interview!) and writing lyrics and music when necessary. I also use the time to edit my radio show, and also to watch some TV shows. I stay up late on weekends to watch movies, so I am pretty much covered in my rest and relaxation time. I wish I had more time to complete more of my own tasks. There are not enough hours in the day for them all! Though with that said, I will soon be having another operation on my second hip. It also needs to be replaced, so I will be off my feet for a short time while I heal and will have more time for my projects.
After your arrival in Denmark, you have been in the band DOWNLORD. But you released only one album? On Metal Archives a „split-up“ is written next to the status. How I should to understand to this? Will there ever be any new music, a new CD? I really enjoyed your death metal.
No, new Downlord is currently planned. We are possibly considering re-recording the album - or certain tracks from it - way off in the future, as the technology will give us a more advanced sound. We released our two demos on the “Grind Trials” EP, and the full-length album “Random Dictionary of the Damned” soon after. It’s strange, as I was sorting through some old CDs the other day and I found our demo discs. I still have many of them, plain white cover with a print on the disc. I don’t even know if they work after all this time. I guess I must check them out, then see if anyone wants them.
When I interviewed Karl Willetts from the excellent MEMORIAM, he said: “I've seen a lot of bands experiment with the new sound over the years and in the end it tends to discourage fans. Memoriam will always have one hundred percent roots in old school death metal". This sentence dug deep into my memory. I realized that on old death metal I love that dusty, rotten and cold sound. Every old band can be recognized during the first few tones. When I hear some current modern brutal technical progressive death metal bands, I somehow don't understand it anymore. I always only survive a few songs live and then I get bored. It often only seems to me like a group of jazz-men who have come to show how they can play in a very complicated way - but back to the question - how do you perceive modern trends in death metal? Do you like any bands?
This is going to be a short answer. I don’t listen to very much modern Death Metal, unless they have an OSDM sound. The bands trying to experiment are not of interest to me at all. Give me OSDM or Get The Fuck Out!
You must have been already explaining somewhere why you left Great Britain and moved to Denmark. But I would rather be interested - what you can say about the death metal scene there. I know from recent times, bands like PHRENELITH, SULPHUROUS, UNDERGANG, BAEST, DEIQUISITOR. And then I really like the thrash ARTILLERY and HATESPHERE. I also did interviews with HATESPHERE, and the bands agreed that Denmark doesn't have many places to play underground or death metal. In my opinion, Britain has an advantage in this, there are a lot of clubs, festivals, pubs. How do you perceive the Danish scene?
There’s a LOT of excellent underground DM here in Denmark. I’d put UNDERGANG at the top of them, definitely. So many bands here that were sadly overlooked by many, so I’d say that people should be supporting the underrated scene in Denmark. Bands from the past, such as DETEST are doing new albums too. (I’ve heard some of it, and can tell you it’s going to be killer!) Who knows…maybe some band called Downlord will rear it’s head once more, too. Nowadays there are more places for the Danish underground to play live. The scene here is growing in strength again.
You are a legend in death metal, you have done a lot of great work. But do you still have some dream? Maybe tour with your favorite band or share a stage with your idol? To sing with AUTOPSY for example? So does David Ingram have any unfulfilled dreams?
I’m fulfilling a lot of my dreams as it is, and have done so previously. My one dream? That is to be in an episode of Doctor Who. I nearly was back in 2015….back then I was friends with the musical composer for the show, Murray Gold. I told him if ever he needed any growls he should just ask. He said that the show would need some very soon BUT the job went to Corey Taylor from Slipknot. I understand why, as he is more well known than me, but it was a great disappointment. Still, there is maybe time for a part.
As a singer, you sing lyrics that you have to identify with. Or at least that's how I hear your voice. That you believe to what you sing. Are the lyrics very important to you? Did you refuse one, for example? And do you write yours too? What I did find, so I think you just wrote something to the album from URSINNE, or am I wrong?
The lyrics are very important to me, and I have to believe in what I am singing. This is usually fine, since I write them myself. But there have been times when I was singing someone else’s lyrics and I couldn’t put my voice to them. These were usually bands asking me to make guest vocals, not the bands I have joined in the past. (I am still available for guest vocals but you will now have to talk with my agent directly first.)
