Ave EVOKED! Greetings to the German underground. Let's go straight to the most important thing. You have released a new EP „Immoral Arts“, which is literally packed with honest, dusty death metal. How did the album come about and how do you feel about it? What direction have EVOKED evolved to?

And Ave to you too, Jakub! Great to hear from you and thanks for the opportunity to do this interview with you an DEADLY STORM Zine!

Yes “Immoral Arts” was released about a moth ago and got quite a bit phenomenal reactions in the Death Metal scene, witch we really appreciate. The writing process took a lot of time, as usual for us, as we are a rather slow working band in terms of writing. We a generally really content with the outcome of the writing and recording, with the sound and the songs and are sure, that we’ve created a solid piece of crushing death metal. I think we didn’t change much in direction. The EP is a consequent step forward in our path of playing death metal (ear crushing and brutal). And we’ll see where it leads us from here and what the next release will sound like.


I'm listening to it right now, and I have to write that this time it took me a while to get this record into my blood. I put the album into the player, I am listening to it in the car. I really like the sound. It is lively, organic, old school and at the same time clear. It seems different to me from your previous records. Where did you record and who is signed under the sound?

And fortunately the EP isn’t so long, so you can listen to it a 100 times a day, hahaha! Where ever you go, EVOKED will go with you! I’m glad you like the sound so much. The main reason for the difference in sound is the change of the recording place most likely. We opted for ‘That Basement Studio’ to record all tracks and let the grandmaster Marco Brinkmann at ‘Hellforge Studio’ lay it hands on the recordings for mix and master, who had done the complete recordings, mix and master on our 2019 album ‘Ravenous Compulsion’.

I think you'll agree with me that packaging sells. You guys have it pretty brutal this year. The author is Timon Kokott. The theme is the exhumation of the damned? Personally, I like the cover, I just wonder if it's "too" brutal. You know, on social media, artificial intelligence evaluates what's right and what's wrong. A lot of bands have gotten in trouble for covers like this. How did you and Timon get together, and what exactly does the theme convey in relation to the music?

In terms of brutality I would disagree, as I find the ‘Ravenous Compulsion’ cover art much more bloody an violent. In general the theme around ‘Immoral Arts’ evolves around the legend of Frankenstein’s Monster. Timon Kokott is the man behind our cover arts since ‘Ravenous Compulsion’ and did a fantastic job also this time. We got in touch, discussed the idea, settled for a style of drawing and pointed out some details as for example the fearful, painful and agonising expression on the cadavers face, as it comes to life, which he doesn’t want to. And we never experienced any problems with social media or some one else. Guess we have to test the boundaries a little more.


I put "Immoral Arts" over and over again in my head and I think what I like most about the album is probably that hard to describe old school death metal feeling. Then I look at your promo pics and one of you is wearing a shirt of my favourite CRYPTIC BROOD. Looks like we're of the same blood. Who was and is your role model? Every musician started out somehow, there are role models that shaped their signature. What were yours?

Yeah man! Cryptic Brood are good friends of us and we did work with Steffen. Concerning the role models - every band member has kind of its own. Mine are in terms of drumming definitely Demolition Hammer’s Vinny Daze and John Bonham and maybe a little bit Phil Taylor of Motörhead :) But for our music in general, the great, classy old school death metal bands of Europe.

I remember when I wrote a review of your first album "Ravenous Compulsion" years ago, I listened to it over and over again. Do I have it set up that if I like a band, I want to see them live, to confirm how the songs sound in concert? How do you enjoy going to gigs? And how do the new songs work live? What kind of feedback do you get?

We really enjoy playing live. Well - except for the waiting time that comes with every performance, but generally we like the whole bundle. Meeting new and old friends, share beers, going on stage and give last drop of sweat and blood and sometime get to enjoy a concert afterwards. All our song work out great in live situations. We’ve got the chance to perform two songs from the EP last year and they absolutely stood the test on stage with good feedback.


What do you think about the current trends, widespread mainly among young bands, where they try to play as technically as possible, they often insert a saxophone, various keyboards into death metal and look for a way in a very complicated way. Do you enjoy such bands? For example, if I ever come to a concert and someone like this performs there, I'm confused. It seems like a rehearsal of a jazz school to me, but in the end I don't remember anything at all. What about you and current trends in death metal?

Hm … well. There is nothing wrong to play technical and try out something new. Or if a song kind of requests a difficult and technical part, to play it but please leave sax out of death metal hahahah. There may be styles that can profit from exotic (within metal) instruments, but that’s not true for old school death metal.

In the Czech Republic, the scene is so closed. The band and the fans more or less all know each other and to be honest, it seems to me that not many people go to death metal anymore. The younger ones listen to something completely different. You're from North Rhine-Westphalia, what's your scene like, what are the clubs like. And the fans? Do they support bands, do they go to shows?

In our region there is a quite lively, active metal scene with great clubs and organizers. We’ve got to meet so many people over the years in the death metal scene, that it my seem small, but i’m always surprised to see, how many people come to our shows, that we don’t know. And there are even a hand full of younger dudes and dudettes, which keeps the hope alive, that the scene will not come to an end so fast.


A lot of bands are already planning tours for autumn and winter. How are you doing with the promotion of "Immoral Arts"? I'd like to finally see it live. Are you coming to the Czech Republic?

We surely want to play all over Europe but haven’t found the possibility for a tour yet. But we also enjoy single shows or weekend tours, so if you are connected to organizers in Czech Republic, feel free to invite us over. We’ll find a way. In September we are playing in Slovakia (Poprad) and Hannover and in October we’ll have a great gig in Hamburg coming up.

In the end I always ask a slightly philosophical question. How would you define death metal and what does it mean to you? I don't mean the playing technique now, but rather what it brings to you, how you perceive it in relation to the fans. Did you grow up on it?

Oh that’s a question to talk about at a table over 20 beers hahaha. To me it’s pure energy, brutality that is formed into melodies and rhythms, while pushing the limits of the instruments as well as the body and garnish it with “gore” and “disgusting” leads. It took me a while to get into the extremer forms of metal. So I started out as a normal Motörhead, Punk rock and Iron Maiden kid, and then disaster happened somewhere along the way and threw me into Black, Thrash and Death metal. Like a natural flow.

Ave EVOKED! Zdravím do německého undergroundu. Pojďme rovnou k tomu nejdůležitějšímu. Máte venku nové EP „Immoral Arts“, které je doslova narvaná poctivým, prašivým death metalem. Jak album vznikalo a jaký z něj máš pocit? Jakým směrem se EVOKED posunuli?

Ano, "Immoral Arts" vyšlo asi před měsícem a sklidilo na deathmetalové scéně docela fenomenální reakce, čehož si opravdu vážíme. Proces psaní nám zabral hodně času, jak je u nás obvyklé, protože jsme poměrně pomalu pracující kapela, co se týče psaní. S výsledkem psaní a nahrávání, se zvukem a skladbami jsme obecně velmi spokojeni a jsme si jisti, že jsme vytvořili solidní kus drtivého death metalu. Myslím, že jsme toho ve směru tvorby moc nezměnili. EP je důsledným krokem vpřed na naší cestě hraní death metalu (uši drtícího a brutálního). A uvidíme, kam nás to povede dál a jak bude znít další deska.


Právě ji poslouchám a musím napsat, že tentokrát mi chvilku trvalo, než mi pronikla do krve. Narval jsem si album do přehrávače, poslouchám ji v autě. Hodně se mi líbí zvuk. Je živý, organický, old schoolový a zároveň dobře čitelný. Připadá mi odlišný od vašich předchozích desek. Kde jste nahrávali a kdo je pod zvukem podepsán?

A naštěstí EP není tak dlouhé, takže si ho můžete poslechnout stokrát denně, hahaha! Ať už se vydáte kamkoli, EVOKED půjde s vámi! Jsem rád, že se ti ten zvuk tak líbí. Hlavním důvodem rozdílu ve zvuku je nejspíš změna místa nahrávání. Pro nahrávání všech skladeb jsme se rozhodli pro 'That Basement Studio' a nechali jsme nahrávky pro mix a master přiložit ruce k dílu velmistra Marca Brinkmanna z 'Hellforge Studio', který už dělal kompletní nahrávky, mix a master na našem albu 'Ravenous Compulsion' z roku 2019.

Asi se mnou budeš souhlasit, že obal prodává. Vy jej máte letos pořádně brutální. Autorem je Timon Kokott. Motivem je exhumace prokletého? Osobně se mi obal líbí, jen si říkám, jestli není „příliš“ brutální. Znáš to, na sociálních sítích vyhodnocuje co je a co není správné umělá inteligence. Spousta kapel kvůli podobným obalům měla problémy. Jak jste se dali s Timonem dohromady a co přesně má motiv vyjadřovat ve vztahu k hudbě?

Co se týče brutality, nesouhlasím, protože obálka "Ravenous Compulsion" mi přijde mnohem krvavější a násilnější. Obecně se téma "Immoral Arts" odvíjí od legendy o Frankensteinově monstru. Timon Kokott stojí za našimi obálkami od vydání 'Ravenous Compulsion' a i tentokrát odvedl fantastickou práci. Spojili jsme se, prodiskutovali nápad, dohodli se na stylu kresby a upozornili na některé detaily, jako je například děsivý, bolestný a mučivý výraz v obličeji mrtvoly, která ožívá, což nechce. A nikdy jsme nezažili žádné problémy se sociálními sítěmi nebo někým jiným. Hádám, že musíme ještě trochu otestovat hranice.


Dávám si „Immoral Arts“ znovu a znovu do hlavy a říkám si, že nejvíc se mi na albu líbí asi takový ten těžko popsatelný old school death metalový feeling. Pak kouknu na vaše promo fotky a jeden z vás má tričko mých oblíbených CRYPTIC BROOD. Vypadá to, že jsme stejné krve. Kdo byl a je vlastně vaším vzorem? Každý muzikant nějak začínal, existují vzory, které formovaly jeho rukopis. Jaké byly ty vaše?

Jo, chlape! Cryptic Brood jsou naši dobří přátelé a se Steffenem jsme spolupracovali. Co se týče vzorů - každý člen kapely má tak trochu svůj vlastní. Mými jsou, co se týče bubnování, určitě Vinny Daze z Demolition Hammer a John Bonham a možná trochu Phil Taylor z Motörhead :) A co se týče bubnování, tak to jsou pro mě určitě vzory. Ale co se týče naší hudby obecně, jsou to skvělé, stylové deathmetalové kapely staré školy z Evropy.

Pamatuji si, že když jsem psal před lety recenzi na vaše první album „Ravenous Compulsion“, tak jsem album poslouchal stále dokola. Mám to nastavené tak, že když se mi nějaká kapela líbí, chci ji vidět naživo, potvrdit si, jak znějí skladby na koncertě? Jak si užíváte koncerty vy? A jak fungují nové songy na živo? Jaké máte ohlasy?

Hraní naživo si opravdu užíváme. Tedy až na to čekání, které je s každým vystoupením spojeno, ale obecně se nám celý ten balík líbí. Potkat nové i staré přátele, podělit se o pivo, jít na pódium a odevzdat poslední kapku potu a krve a někdy si pak užít koncert. Všechny naše písničky fungují v živých situacích skvěle. Loni jsme měli možnost zahrát dvě písně z EP a na pódiu naprosto obstály a měly dobrý ohlas.


Jak se díváš na současný trend, rozšířený převážně mezi mladými kapelami, kdy se snaží hrát co nejvíc technicky, často do death metalu vkládají třeba saxofon, různé klávesy a vůbec hledají cestu hodně komplikovaným způsobem. Baví tě takové kapely? Já třeba když někdy přijdu na koncert a někdo podobný tam vystupuje, tak jsem zmatený. Přijde mi to jako cvičení v jazzové škole, ale nakonec si vůbec nic nepamatuji. Co vy a současné trendy v death metalu?

Hm... no. Není nic špatného na tom, že si hrajete technicky a zkoušíte něco nového. Nebo když si nějaká písnička tak trochu žádá obtížný a technický part, tak ho zahrát, ale saxofon prosím vynechat z death metalu hahahah. Možná existují styly, které mohou těžit z exotických (v rámci metalu) nástrojů, ale to neplatí pro old school death metal.

U nás v Čechách je scéna taková uzavřená. Kapela i fanoušci se víceméně všichni znají a abych pravdu řekl, tak mi připadá, že na death metal už moc lidí nechodí. Mladší poslouchají už úplně něco jiného. Vy jste z North Rhine-Westphalia, jaká je u vás scéna, co kluby. A fanoušci? Podporují kapely, chodí na koncerty?

V našem regionu je poměrně živá a aktivní metalová scéna se skvělými kluby a organizátory. Za ta léta jsme se na deathmetalové scéně seznámili s tolika lidmi, že se mi to zdá málo, ale vždycky mě překvapí, kolik lidí chodí na naše koncerty, které neznáme. A dokonce je tu i plno  mladších frajerů a frajerek, což udržuje naději, že scéna tak rychle neskončí.


Spousta skupin už plánuje turné na podzim a zimu. Jak jste na tom vy s propagací „Immoral Arts“? Už bych rád konečně viděl naživo. Zavítáte i k nám do České republiky?

Určitě chceme hrát po celé Evropě, ale zatím jsme nenašli možnost turné. Ale baví nás i jednotlivá vystoupení nebo víkendová turné, takže pokud máte spojení na pořadatele v České republice, klidně nás pozvěte. Určitě si nějakou cestu najdeme. V září hrajeme na Slovensku (Poprad) a v Hannoveru a v říjnu nás čeká skvělý koncert v Hamburku.

Blížíme se k závěru a to vždycky dávám lehce filozofickou otázku. Jak bys definoval death metal a co pro tebe znamená? Nemyslím tím teď techniku hraní, ale spíše co ti přináší, bere, jak jej vnímáš ve vztahu k fanouškům. Vyrostl jsi na něm?

To je otázka, o které se dá mluvit u stolu nad 20 pivy hahaha. Pro mě je to čistá energie, brutalita, která se formuje do melodií a rytmů, přičemž se posouvají hranice nástrojů i těla a zdobí se to "gore" a "nechutnými" motivy. Chvíli mi trvalo, než jsem se dostal k extrémnějším formám metalu. Začínal jsem tedy jako normální kluk na Motörhead, punk rocku a Iron Maiden, a pak se někde cestou stala katastrofa, která mě vrhla na black, thrash a death metal. Jako přirozený vývoj.

Některá těla jsou zohavená k nepoznání, jiná se rozpadnou v prach, když na ně promluvíte. Občas mám pocit, že se mnou mrtví rozmlouvají. Mají jedovaté hlasy a mluví o utrpení, které museli kdysi zažít. Nejhorší jsou ale rakve popsané tajnými symboly. Smrdí sírou a jsou v nich uloženy mrtvoly prokletých. Většinou drží v sepnutých rukou nějakou dobrou desku. Tahle zombie vypadala jako spálená a v rakvi jsme nalezli nové EP německých tmářů EVOKED. 

Cestu téhle smečky sleduji od jejich počátků. Vždycky se mi líbil jejich staroškolský přístup ke kovu smrti, jejich nadšení a uvěřitelnost. Z vnitřností opět lezou červi a kroutí se do rytmu. Oční důlky bez očí, přesto se na mě dívají. Chřestění prašivých kostí. Byla znovu otevřena další kobka, aby vydala děsivé svědectví. 

 

Cítím pach hniloby a rozkládajícího se těla. Prosévám mezi prsty prach a užívám si jednotlivé skladby. Jako starý hrobník si podupávám do rytmu, kopu znovu a znovu do chladné země. Tohle je hudba, která koluje i v mých žilách. Zažil jsem devadesátá léta minulého století a po hřbitovech se toulám již dlouhé roky. Vyhledávám už dávno jenom hudbu, která mě dokáže rozdrtit, zničit, pohřbít zaživa. Tohle všechno umí EVOKED perfektně. Hodně k tomu přispívá i skvělý, prašivý zvuk (Marco Brinkmann - mixing, mastering, Marko Sundermann - recording). Vše potom doplňuje perfektní obal od Timon Kokott. Představte si starou hrobku, dávno opuštěnou a zapomenutou. Vejdete dovnitř a hned víte, že jste zde správně, že se hraje přímo pro vás, že se k téhle desce budete rádi a často vracet. Smrt je při poslechu velmi blízko a pokud máte rádi kapely jako PESTILENCE, AUTOPSY, MORGOTH, ASPHYX, DEATH, SKELETAL REMAINS, RUDE, budete určitě spokojeni. Líbí se mi takové to syrové nadšení, uvěřitelnost a opravdovost, které ze skladeb cítím. Jsou to přesně ty momenty, které milujeme třeba v hororech. Krev odkapávající z čepele ostrého nože, mrtvoly na pitevním stole, které ožívají a touží po jediném - aby vám prokously hrdlo. Přesně takový dojem mám i u nového EP "Immoral Arts". Pánové jsou jako sochaři smrti, kteří vystavují svoje dílo v morbidní galerii. Nelze jinak, než album doporučit všem, kteří starodávný kov smrti uctívají. Některá těla jsou zohavená k nepoznání, jiná se rozpadnou v prach, když na ně promluvíte. Občas mám pocit, že se mnou mrtví rozmlouvají. Mají jedovaté hlasy a mluví o utrpení, které museli kdysi zažít. Nejhorší jsou ale rakve popsané tajnými symboly. Smrdí sírou a jsou v nich uloženy mrtvoly prokletých. Syrový, prašivý, temný death metal, u kterého se rozpadnete v prach! Budete pohřbeni zaživa!

They have poisonous voices and they talk about the suffering they must have once experienced. But the worst are the coffins inscribed with secret symbols. This zombie looked burnt and in the coffin we found the new EP of German darkness band EVOKED. 

I've been following the journey of this pack since their early days. I've always liked their old school approach to death metal, their enthusiasm and believability. Once again, worms crawl out of their guts and wriggle to the beat. Eye sockets without eyes, yet they look at me. The rattling of mangy bones. Another dungeon has been reopened to bear horrific witness. 


I smell rot and decomposing flesh. I sift the dust between my fingers and enjoy each song. Like an old gravedigger, I stomp to the rhythm, kicking again and again into the cold earth. This is the music that runs through my veins. I lived through the 1990s and have been wandering the cemeteries for many years. I've been searching for music that can crush me, destroy me, bury me alive. EVOKED does all this perfectly. A lot of it is contributed by great, dusty sound (Marco Brinkmann - mixing, mastering, Marko Sundermann - recording). Everything is then complemented by a perfect cover by Timon Kokott. Imagine an old tomb, long abandoned and forgotten. You walk in and immediately know that you are right here, that this is being played just for you, that you will come back to this record happily and often. Death is very close when you listen to it and if you like bands like PESTILENCE, AUTOPSY, MORGOTH, ASPHYX, DEATH, SKELETAL REMAINS, RUDE, you will definitely be satisfied. I like the raw enthusiasm, believability and realness that I feel from the songs. It's exactly those moments that we love in horror movies, for example. The blood dripping off the blade of a sharp knife, the corpses on the autopsy table coming back to life and wanting only one thing - to bite your throat out. That's exactly the impression I get with the new EP "Immoral Arts". The gentlemen are like death sculptors displaying their work in a morbid gallery. I can't help but recommend the album to anyone who worships the ancient metal of death. Some bodies are mutilated beyond recognition, others crumble into dust when you speak to them. Sometimes I feel like the dead are talking to me. They have poisonous voices and speak of the suffering they must have once experienced. But the worst are the coffins inscribed with secret symbols.
