Recenze/review - DARKRYPT - As Fate Draws Near (2023)

DARKRYPT - As Fate Draws Near

Bodl mě zezadu a šeptal mi slova odpušění.

Ano, přesně takový smrtící kov koluje i v mých žilách.

Asphyx says:

First I get scared, then I believe. He always acted like a friend, smiled at me. He had something strange in his eyes, a kind of ancient hatred, a primitive rage he couldn't control. He stabbed me from behind and whispered words of forgiveness. As I fell to the ground, blood poured from me and I looked into his cold eyes. I crossed over to the next world with a sense of betrayal. I will never find peace, never see the light again. I will forever wander the underworld listening to death metal.

You may have already met Indian DARKRYPT once on our website. It was in 2016, when the band released the album "Delirious Excursion". I liked it back then and since I decided to support packs that play good music, I was happy to have the opportunity to write about their new release "As Fate Draws Near". The band can write strong melodies, it's real and real. This is exactly death metal to my taste.

The massive, cold and dark sound (Dan Swanö) and the cover art (Turkka G. Rantanen) catches your attention at the first listen. But the main thing is hidden inside the individual tracks. I can feel a magical, black power, a manic attitude, but also a lot of honest work and talent. Compared to the last record, I find the new one a bit more melodic and sophisticated. Sharp riffs, powerful melodies, lots of interesting moments. It's an honour and a real pleasure for me to keep coming back to the record and playing it over and over again. DARKRYPT are still going at it the old-fashioned way, in a similar way as packs like ASPHYX, OBITUARY, INCANTATION, GRAVE, DISMEMBER, NIHILIST. At some points the album is perhaps a bit too long, but take that as a minor complaint from an old death metal fan. Otherwise everything is in the best order. You get a good portion of death metal, played with clarity and experience. Usually when writing a review I just let the music affect me and wait to see if it does anything to me. With "As Fate Draws Near" I immediately started swaying to the beat, stomping my foot and pounding my fist on the table. Yes, that's exactly the kind of deadly metal that runs through my veins. The new record imprinted itself on me like red-hot iron on my skin. My brain boiled in its own juices and my insides burned. I'll never find peace, never see the light again. I will forever wander the underworld listening to death metal. And I'm glad I did. Real, honest death metal that will rip your face to shreds!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from India - DARKRYPT.

A few questions - interview with death metal band from India - DARKRYPT.

Answered Mihir Gaikwad & Rishabh Ravi from Darkrypt, thank you!

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Mihir: Darkrypt was founded in 2013 in Mumbai, India. We play dark death metal and we’ve been quite active since 2014. We released our debut album - Delirious Excursion - in 2016 via Transcending Obscurity to much critical acclaim. Our first album was mixed by Greg Chandler and was mastered by Dan Swanö. While we had some lineup changes in 2017-2018, we decided to get the original lineup together to work on a second album in late 2020. However, due to some personal commitments, it was just Rishabh and I who could continue on our second album - As Fate Draws Near.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

Mihir: We recorded this album in my bedroom, and I took care of the recording and the editing aspects. We then sent the recordings to the legendary Dan Swanö at Unisound Studios for mixing and mastering.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

Mihir: We do have CDs of the album - 300 copies for the time being. And it’s also available digitally via. BandCamp, iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music etc.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

Mihir: I worked on the lyrics once Rishabh had the basic song structures in place. As we both have been quite inspired by sci-fi thrillers, we had a general direction in mind. The album primarily deals with the themes of fate, destiny, free-will and reality.

Songs like As Fate Draws Near, The Sculptor of Flesh, and Corridor of Torment relate directly to my personal beliefs and experience, whereas songs like Welcome to Rapture, The Cabal, Subject Delta take inspiration from the events in BioShock. On the other hand, Shackled is inspired from Blade Runner, and The Illusionary Mind is inspired from George Orwell’s 1984.

The album is titled such because FATE is a very central theme throughout the album.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

Rishabh: The logo was originally created by one of our close friends, Vineet Sharma. We currently don’t have our website but we do have a Bandcamp page which has both of our albums available.

We live in a digital age so things such as social media definitely play a crucial part in every band’s promotion. It is easier now to connect with folks around the world and for everyone else to discover our music. So these things are pretty important if one wants to put their music out there.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

Mihir: We decided to self-release this album. While composing and recording quality music is critical, we also wanted to learn the complete process and the behind-the-scenes to releasing an album. Consequently, this whole endeavour has been quite enlightening as it has helped us understand the amount of effort required to put our music out there.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Rishabh: Our influence comes from a plethora of death & black metal bands. Bands such as Sulphur Aeon, Immolation, Incantation, Blood Incantation, Krypts, Deathspell Omega, Akhylys, Carach Angren and many more have inspired us to create this music that we have released.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Rishabh: Although at the beginning we considered working with a label, we decided quite early on to self-release this album.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Rishabh: We have been playing gigs roughly since 2014 so it is a bit hard to keep track of the number of gigs we’ve played. We love all types of gigs, I think it is the feeling of being on stage and playing our music that makes it amazing. We haven’t played any festivals yet but it's something we would like to do soon. I think some of our best performances were during our ‘Durance of Hate III’ tour which was within India. In our opinion this was when we were at our tightest so far.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

Rishabh: We would like for this album to reach as many metalheads as possible. As for our plans for the future, we will keep polishing our sound and keep creating more albums. On the other hand, we would also like to bring our music to every corner of the world through concerts and every other means possible. So playing a lot more gigs and festivals across the world would be one of our goals.

What we want to achieve as a band is our identity that can be easily recognized as the ‘Darkrypt sound’. So with further polishing and improving ourselves at every step we would like to create something original as well as something unique.

Mihir: It’s particularly inspiring and fascinating when people across the world discover our music, message us about it, or even write reviews. So in the here and now, we would love to know what our fans and followers think of our new album.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

Rishabh: Fans can definitely contact us at our social media pages which is @darkryptband for both, Instagram & Facebook, as well as on BandCamp : www.darkryptdm.bandcamp.com

Thanx for the interview.
