Ave SULPHUROUS! I have been listening to your new album „The Black Mouth of Sepulchre“ for some time now and I still discover something new in it, some new pieces of darkness. I have to say that I thought that your album will be great but this completely killed me. The album is great. How are your reactions from your fans and what about reviews?

Hi there, M. speaking

I’m completely blown away about the amazing reactions from fans and the great reviews that has been dropping in. I didn’t think this album would be received this well. So, I’m very happy about everything.

Have you played your new songs live already? How do they work with fans? Do you have any potential hit? For me it would be probably „Shadows Writhing like Black Wings“.

No, we haven’t. Sulphurous hasn’t played live for the last 8 years or so. So, i can’t answer that question sorry.

How did you compose new material for „The Black Mouth of Sepulchre“? How SULPHUROUS compose?

The material which is not that new anymore since I made the songs between 2017-2018 or so, and 1 song is all the way back from 2012. I write everything for Sulphurous and made this album at home shortly after the first album.


Who is the author of your lyrics? What are your lyrics about and where do you find inspiration?

I also wrote all the lyrics for The Black Mouth of Sepulchre. The lyrical concept for the album is centered about death and the creeping slow march towards the end, combined with a bit of ancient malevolence in them.

I found the inspiration from different writers of Philosophical, fantasy and poets. Old and new books.

I also like the cover for the new record. The author is my favourite painter Paolo Girardi. This time, the motive really worked. How did you get together with Paolo? And why him? Is the painting painted to order or have you already chosen from the finished works?

Thanks, yeah it really is an amazing painting he did here. Paolo painted the cover for my other band Hyperdontia – Nexus of Teeth album. So, I knew him from this. And I have been admiring his work for a long time. I actually started out talking with Timo Ketola just before he passed away REST IN POWER. Then I talked with the guy who did the early Cruciamentum stuff. But I’m glad I ended up working with Paolo Girardi, because he captured the essence of my music and the mood on the record perfectly. I asked him for specific stuff, and he did an excellent job. So, I will definitely work with him again.


The sound of the album is really great. It is dark, cold and sharp at the same time. In what studio did you recorded? Were you able to have any comments during the recording and at the final sound and mastering?

The Black Mouth of Sepulchre was actually recorded by us - the band on our own. T. on drums recorded his drums at his studio on his own. M.C. who helped on bass for this recording did it in his home studio. And I recorded the guitars, vocals, and piano at the studio where I also rehearse. It is the same place where Las Ballade has his studio and he mixed and mastered the album. Las did an amazing job with this beast. He made the sound just as we wanted it to be so very happy to work with my old friend from Ballade Studios.


How did you actually get into playing death metal? You can feel from your music that you are also a fan of true death! When did you start playing and what bands did you go through? What about the first concert? Who was your role model and whom did you admire in your beginnings?

I started going to shows when I was around 9-10 years old, when my brother would drag me to punk/hardcore shows in Copenhagen. Then later that evolved into eviler, darker, and more obscure music. The same thing happened for me playing music. I started playing guitar in a punk band and then it went in a more extreme, fast, and demonic direction. So, it has been a kind of journey through different kinds of genres before I ended up the right place.

Yes I am.

I guess I started playing guitar when I was around 10, but it was around I was 15 that I bought my first electric guitar and really started rehearsing every day for many hours. Uhh I miss those times. Hehe

I guess the cross over from hardcore/punk for me was early crust/stenchcore bands from the UK then later bands as Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Death and Deicide.

Don’t remember the first show. It was probably my brother and sister playing with their first band when I was around 9.


On concerts in the Czech Republic I often hear that there is not enough people going on concerts nowadays. I would like to know how is it in Denmark. For us you are a big country with a lot of bands and promoters. A lot of bands go to your country to play when they are on a tour. Do people go on death metal concerts in Denmark? And do you prefer playing in a small club or on big festivals?

Denmark a big country, hehe, I feel like Denmark is a very tiny place. But yes, there is a lot of bands popping up all the time, and most of them actually are quite good.

For many years the scene was actually pretty dead, and no one went to shows, (only diehard fans) and people didn’t really care about touring bands. But luckily for us, the bands, things started to change, and there is a big show up at most concerts and people go because they want to support bands, see their show and buy their merch. That is amazing.

It depends on what show or festival it is. If it’s a show or festival where the promoters and bookers give a damn and take good care of the band then I love playing. But it sucks big time if you’re on tour and have driven maybe 10 hours to get to the show, and there is no one there to help you get in and get ready on stage, no food, no drinks and no place to sleep. But it’s so nice when it’s the opposite, and you feel welcome and taken good care of.


The theme of the concerts is also connected with the previous question. How are SULPHUROUS with them? Do you play often and often? Do you prefer festivals or smaller clubs? And are you even willing to travel far? Aren't you attracted to a longer tour?

I can´t answer for Sulphurous here since we don’t play live anymore. But I can answer for my other bands. Ascendency, Hyperdontia, Night Fever and Taphos which play live and tour as much as possible. I love to tour and travel to places far away to play in front of people who haven’t seen us before. When not home with my family, I live for the shows man. Nothing better than to be on tour and see the world and play great shows. I see myself very lucky to have been to so many countries and experienced so many great things while touring. Wouldn’t be without it.

Nowadays, there is a lot of young bands who start to play “old school death metal”. Most of them are not very good, but there are some good bands who realize what is this music about. Do you have any favourite band which would be able to make those “good old days” alive again?

If you mean “never” bands, then in the underground scene I would maybe go for – Dead Congregation and Kaamos. Older bands would be Deicide, Morbid Angel and Nile.


What does death metal mean to you? Is it a lifestyle, a hobby, relaxation? How would you define it? You can easily embark on philosophical considerations.

I live death metal. For me it is life. It’s definitely a hobby, but so much more than that. It could also be a way to relax, since death metal is being played very often at home and it’s a great way to enjoy myself, relax or get in the mood for some ripping death. I don’t know where I would be without this in my life. I would probably have a very boring life if I didn’t have this.

A necessary question at the end. What is SULPHUROUS planning in the coming months? What can we fans look forward to?

Hopefully the vinyl edition of the album hehe. Since it has been delayed almost 6 months. Besides that, I’m not sure. I have 2 other records coming out soon, and one more where were only missing the vocals to record. So, this is probably what will take my time over the next couple of months. After that I will probably prepare more sinister and abhorrent songs for you.

Ave SULPHUROUS! Poslouchám vaši letošní novinku „The Black Mouth of Sepulchre“ už nějaký čas a pořád v ní objevuji pro sebe nové a nové kousky temnoty. Přiznám se, že jsem od vás čekal dobré řemeslo, ale že mě takhle rozsekáte, tak to ne. Album se podle mě opravdu povedlo. Jaké máte reakce od fanoušků, co recenze?

Jsem úplně unesen úžasnými reakcemi od fanoušků a skvělými recenzemi, které se na nás snáší. Nemyslel jsem si, že toto album bude přijato tak dobře. Takže mám ze všeho velkou radost.

Hráli jste už některé songy z novinky na koncertě? Jak fungují na fanoušky? Máte už nějaký potencionální hit? Osobně bych si tipnul druhou skladbu „Shadows Writhing like Black Wings“.

Ne, nemáme. Sulphurous nehráli živě asi 8 let. Takže na tuto otázku nemohu odpovědět, omlouvám se.

Jakým způsobem vznikal nový materiál pro „The Black Mouth of Sepulchre“? Jak vlastně tvoří/skládají SULPHUROUS?

Materiál, není až tak nový, protože jsem skladby psal mezi lety 2017-2018, nebo tak nějak a jedna skladba je dokonce už z roku 2012. Já skládám vše pro Sulphurous a toto album jsem napsal doma krátce po prvním albu.


Kdo je autorem textů a o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci?

Napsal jsem všechny texty pro “The Black Mouth of Sepulchre”. Textový koncept alba se soustředí na smrt a plíživý pomalý pochod ke konci, v kombinaci s trochou prastaré zloby. Inspiraci jsem našel u různých spisovatelů filozofie, fantasy a básníků. Staré a nové knihy.

Líbí se mi i obal k nové desce. Autorem je můj oblíbený malíř Paolo Girardi. Tentokrát se mu motiv opravdu povedl. Jak jste se dali s Paolem dohromady? A proč právě on? Je obraz malovaný na zakázku nebo jste vybírali už z hotových děl?

Díky, je to opravdu úžasný obraz. Paolo maloval obal mé další kapely Hyperdontia – album “Nexus of Teeth”. Takže jsem ho znal. A jeho práci obdivuji už dlouho. Vlastně jsem začal mluvit s Timem Ketolou těsně předtím, než zemřel. REST IN POWER. Pak jsem mluvil s chlápkem, který dělal rané věci Cruciamentum. Ale jsem rád, že jsem nakonec spolupracoval s Paolem Girardim, protože dokonale vystihl podstatu mé hudby a náladu na desce. Požadoval jsem konkrétní věci a on odvedl skvělou práci. Takže s ním určitě budu znovu spolupracovat.


Skvělý je zvuk celé nahrávky. Je temný, studený a ostrý zároveň. V jakém studiu jste album nahrávali? Mluvili jste jako kapela do výsledného zvuku, masteringu?

“The Black Mouth of Sepulcher” jsme vlastně nahráli my – kapela na vlastní pěst. T. nahrál své bicí ve svém studiu sám. M.C. který na této nahrávce vypomohl na basu, to také nahrál ve svém domácím studiu. A já jsem nahrál kytary, zpěv a klavír ve studiu, kde také zkouším. Je to stejné místo, kde má Las Ballade své studio, on album mixoval a masteroval. Las odvedl úžasnou práci s touto bestií. Udělal zvuk přesně tak, jak jsme chtěli, bylo to skvělé spolupracovat s mým starým přítelem z Ballade Studia.


Jak si se vlastně dostal k tomu, že hraješ death metal? Z vaší hudby je cítit, že jste i fanoušci pravé smrti! Kdy jsi začal hrát a jakými kapelami si prošel? Co první koncert? Kdo byl tvým vzorem a koho si obdivoval ve svých začátcích?

Začal jsem chodit na koncerty, když mi bylo kolem 9-10 let, když mě můj bratr tahal na punk/hardcore koncerty v Kodani. Později se z toho vyvinula temnější a obskurnější hudba. To samé se mi stalo při hraní hudby. Začal jsem hrát na kytaru v punkové kapele a pak to šlo extrémnějším, rychlejším a démoničtějším směrem. Takže to byla určitá cesta přes různé druhy žánrů, než jsem skončil na správném místě. Tuším, že jsem začal hrát na kytaru, když mi bylo kolem deseti, ale bylo mi kolem patnácti, když jsem si koupil svou první elektrickou kytaru a opravdu začal zkoušet každý den po mnoho hodin. Uhh, chybí mi ty časy. Hehe Myslím, že přechodem od hardcore/punku pro mě byly rané crust/stenchcore kapely z Velké Británie, později kapely jako Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Death a Deicide. Nepamatuji si první koncert. Byl to pravděpodobně koncert mého bratra a sestry, kteří hráli s jejich první kapelou, když mi bylo kolem devíti.


Často slýchávám na koncertech v Čechách, jak lidé nechodí, jaká je malá návštěvnost. Zajímalo by mě, jakou máte vy zkušenost z Dánska? Pro nás jste velká země se spoustou kapel, promotérů. Jezdí k vám často skupiny, které naší malou zemi na turné vynechají. Chodí se u vás na death metalové koncerty? Máte raději kluby nebo větší festivaly?

Dánsko a velká země, hehe, mám pocit, že Dánsko je velmi malé. Ale ano, neustále se objevuje spousta kapel a většina z nich je opravdu docela dobrá. Po mnoho let byla scéna docela mrtvá a nikdo nechodil na koncerty (pouze zarytí fanoušci) a lidé se opravdu nezajímali o turné kapel. Ale naštěstí pro nás, pro kapely, se věci začaly měnit a na většině koncertů je velká návštěvnost, protože lidé chtějí podpořit kapely, vidět jejich show a koupit si jejich merch. To je úžasné. Záleží na tom, o jakou show nebo festival se jedná. Pokud je to show nebo festival, kde si promotéři a bookeři dávají záležet a dobře se o kapelu starají, pak hraji rád. Ale je na hovno, když jste na turné a jeli jste třeba 10 hodin, abyste se dostali na show, kde není nikdo, kdo by vám pomohl se připravit na pódiu, žádné jídlo, žádné pití a žádné místo na spaní. Ale je úžasné, když je to naopak a vy se cítíte vítáni a je o vás dobře postaráno.


S předchozí otázkou se pojí i téma koncertů. Jak jsou na tom s nimi SULPHUROUS? Hrajete rádi a často? Máte raději festivaly nebo menší kluby? A jste ochotni třeba i cestovat daleko? Neláká vás nějaké delší turné?

Na tuhle otázku za Sulphurous nemůžu odpovědět, protože už nehrajeme živě. Ale můžu odpovědět za své další kapely. Ascendency, Hyperdontia, Night Fever a Taphos, které hrají živě a koncertují, jak jen to jde. Miluji turné a cestování do vzdálených míst, abych hrál před lidmi, kteří nás ještě neviděli. Když nejsem doma se svou rodinou, žiju pro koncerty. Není nic lepšího, než být na turné a vidět svět a hrát skvělé koncerty. Jsem velmi šťastný, že jsem mohl navštívit tolik zemí a zažít tolik skvělých věcí na turné, bez toho by to nešlo.

V poslední době začíná spousta mladých kapel znovu hrát „old school death metal“. Většině to moc nejde, ale pár nových, slušných kapel, které pochopily, o čem to je, se najde. Máš nějakou oblíbenou, u které si myslíš, že má na to, „oživit staré časy“?

Pokud máš na mysli ”novější” kapely, tak v undergroundové scéně bych možná volil – Dead Congregation a Kaamos. Starší kapely by byly Deicide, Morbid Angel a Nile.


Co pro tebe znamená death metal? Je to životní styl, koníček, relax? Jak bys jej definoval? Můžeš se klidně pustit i do filozofických úvah.

Žiju death metalem. Pro mě je to život. Je to rozhodně koníček, ale i mnohem víc než to. Může to být také způsob relaxace, protože death metal doma hraju velmi často a je to skvělý způsob, jak se pobavit, odpočinout si nebo se naladit na skládání. Nevím, kde bych bez toho v životě byl. Pravděpodobně bych měl velmi nudný život, kdybych tohle neměl.

Nezbytná otázka na konec. Co chystají SULPHUROUS v nejbližších měsících? Na co se můžeme my, fanoušci těšit?

Doufám, že vydáme vinyl, hehe. Vzhledem k tomu, že to bylo téměř o půl roku zpožděno. Mimo to si nejsem jistý. Brzy mi vyjdou další dvě desky a jedna další, kde chybí už jen nahrát vokály. Takže to je pravděpodobně to, co mi v příštích několika měsících zabere čas. Poté pro vás pravděpodobně připravím zlověstnější a ohavnější skladby.

Děkuji moc za rozhovor. Za chvilku vyrážím do práce. Půjdu kolem hřbitova. Je jasné, co mi bude hrát v přehrávači - „The Black Mouth of Sepulchre“. A to pořádně nahlas. Přeji albu co nejlepší prodeje a doufám, že se dostane k co největšímu počtu posluchačů. Ať se vám daří i v soukromí! Death metal forever!

Prší a právě sis vykopal vlastní hrob. Už nemůžeš dál, nejde to. Vše ti připadá černé, ošklivé a zlé. Pronásledují tě noční můry, démoni se zjevují ve snech. Odložíš lopatu a přemýšlíš, jestli přeci jen někde neexistuje alespoň kousek světla. Ne, tentokrát ne. Vrátíš se domů a hledáš hudbu, která tě přenese na onen svět. Dánští SULPHUROUS jsou jasnou volbou. Jejich novinka "The Black Mouth Of Sepulchre" má totiž podobnou atmosféru, jako hřbitov, na kterém si ještě před chvílí přemýšlel o životě a smrti.

S tvorbou kapely jsem se poprvé setkal v roce 2018, když vydali album "Dolorous Death Knell" (odkaz na recenzi dole pod článkem). Již tenkrát jsem měl pocit, že mě někdo pohřbívá zaživa. Letos pánové pokračují v započaté hrobnické práci. Dostanete hrubozrnný, surový a zahnívající death metal staré školy, který se ihned stal mým velmi oblíbeným pokrmem. Podávány jsou totiž jen ty nejvíc zapáchající kousky syrového masa. 


Zmínit musím parádní obal (Paola Girardiho) i morbidní zvuk (Lasse Ballade Studios, Copenhagen). Novinka ale není jen skvěle zvládnutým řemeslem. To by bylo málo. Hroby jsou otevírány ve stylu INCANTATION, DEAD CONGREGATION, DISMA, UNDERGANG, PHRENELITH, GRAVE MIASMA, LVCIFYRE. SULPHUROUS přidávají navíc část sebe samého, kus svých zvrácených myšlenek. Skladby mají magickou, rituální a pochmurnou atmosféru. Jakoby kapela nahrubo nakrájela tmu a spolu se zkaženou krví nám ji rvala do chřtánu. Těžké, mokvající doomové pasáže se střídají s těmi rychlými, devastujícími. Posluchač dostává velmi pestrou nahrávku, laděnou do krvavých odstínů černé. Líbí se mi vlastně vše. Práce bubeníka, zuřivý a nelidský vokál i riffy, které odsekávají maso od kostí. Prší a právě jsem si vykopal vlastní hrob. Už nemůžu dál, nejde to. Vše mi připadá černé, ošklivé a zlé. Pronásledují mě noční můry, démoni se zjevují ve snech. Jsem prokletý! Prokletý poslechem nové desky "The Black Mouth Of Sepulchre". Ta se na dlouhý čas stala mým průvodcem v podsvětí. Brána do pekla byla znovu otevřena. Stačí jen vstoupit a přidat hlasitost. Dáma s kosou chodí okolo a podupává si do rytmu. Bestie se probudila. A stáhne vás do hlubin. Death metalové ozvěny ze záhrobí! Vynikající zásek!

It's raining and you just dug your own grave. You can't go on, it's not working. Everything seems black, ugly and bad to you. You are haunted by nightmares, demons appear in dreams. You put down your shovel and wonder if there isn't at least a bit of light somewhere. No, not this time. You return home looking for music that will take you to the other world. The Danish SULPHUROUS is a clear choice. Their new album "The Black Mouth Of Sepulcher" has a similar atmosphere as the cemetery in which he had just thought about life and death.

I first encountered the creation of the band in 2018, when they released the album "Dolorous Death Knell" (link to the review below the article). Even then, I had the feeling that someone was burying me alive. This year, the gentlemen continue the work of tomb work. You get coarse-grained, raw and rotting old-school death metal, which immediately became my very favourite dish. Only the smelliest pieces of raw meat are served.


I must mention the great cover (Paolo Girardi) and the morbid sound (Lasse Ballade Studios, Copenhagen). But the new album is not just a well-managed craft. That would be not enough. The graves are opened in the style of INCANTATION, DEAD CONGREGATION, DISMA, UNDERGANG, PHRENELITH, GRAVE MIASMA, LVCIFYRE. In addition, SULPHUROUS adds a part of themselves, a piece of their perverted thoughts. The songs have a magical, ritual and gloomy atmosphere. It was as if the band had roughly cut the darkness and, together with the spoiled blood, was tearing it into our throats. Heavy, wetting doom passages alternate with fast, devastating ones. The listener receives a very varied recording, tuned to bloody shades of black. I actually like everything. The work of a drummer, furious and inhuman vocals and riffs that cut meat from bones. It's raining and I just dug my own grave. I can't go on, it's not working. Everything seems black, ugly and bad to me. I am haunted by nightmares, demons appear in dreams. I'm cursed! Cursed by listening to the new album "The Black Mouth Of Sepulchre". She became my guide in the underworld for a long time. The gates of hell were reopened. Just enter and add volume. The lady with the scythe walks around and stamps to the beat. The beast awoke. And it will take you to the depths. Death metal echoes from the graveyard! Excellent matter!
