Interview - NECROTESQUE - Dark, razor-sharp death metal!

Ave NECROTESQUE! Greetings to the underground. I hope everything is fine with you. It should be because this year you have released a first long-play full-length album in your band's career. I have to admit it has literally blown my mind. It is dark, energic and as if it cuts by the sharp edge of the knife. I can hear from the record you did a really good job and you added a big portion of the talent, too. How do you perceive the new album in comparison to the previous work? Where did you want to move and in what are these two records different?

Hi Jacub! First of, thank you for the compliments!

Our first EP we released was a test, to see if people were interested in the music we have in our head. They seem to like it, so we jumped right in after the release of our first EP to start writing new material. We have so many ideas still which we want to make into cool songs, but we also know you shouldn’t overdo it. So we have to pace ourselves.

For this new album we have learned a lot regarding the sound we want to create and we think it is a step up from the EP.

„The Perpetuated Festering“ includes all attributes of good death metal. For me personally, it represents the record, which I really like to listen to. How did you produce it? How look the writing process of new material in the case of NECROTESQUE?

The first EP was created at home during the Corona/lockdown period. Arjan and I created the guitar parts at home, threw in some guides for drums and send it to the rest of the band to let them do their thing with it. That works for us. So we did it quite similary this time around. Thankfully we did have more time to play the songs together this time so we could also try some things together which i think really reflexts in the energy of this new record.


I have to confirm that I like the production of the album. It still makes me turn up the volume on the hi-fi tower. Who made you a sound that is cruel, raw and dark and animalistic at the same time. How did you find working with him and why him? What studio did you record in and how did it all work?

We (Arjan) did all the pre-production at home. Re-amping the guitars and bass and after that we’ve send it to our Mixer, Rick @ RaRecordings. Who also did our first EP. He also recorded the drums for the first EP and the new album. We are really happy with him because he has the same low bullshit level as we do. Just record the songs and don’t try to add too much bullshit to it. Keep it raw. No time-aligning drums etc. The vocals were recorded partialy at a studio which was just an aweful experience and the rest we did at our drummers at home (who also has a small studio setup at home)

The album has a dead cover. Who is the author? How did you choose the theme and how does it relate to the music on the record?

We contacted an artist through the internet who’s art we really liked. None of us have any drawing talent, so that seems like the best idea. His name on Facebook is Dedy Badic Art. He really captured the exact idea we conveyed to him. The theme is an extension to our first EP with the name „The necrotic grotesque“ where our band name derives from . One of the lines in the lyrics of the Necrotic Grotesque is „A festering blob of flesh without skin“ so it seemed only logical to continue with „The perpetuated festering“ .. just keep on rotting as it were!


I have been wandering the underground for over thirty years and I still go to Holland for music with certainty. I think we have a similar nature and taste when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and I monitor your scene carefully. Maybe I envy you a little, because we only have a few death metal bands that are worth it. How do you explain that death metal are doing so well in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels?

The Netherlands were at the centre of the development of the European Death Metal sound in the late 80's, together with Sweden of course. Gorefest, Pestilence and Asphyx are probably the holy trinity of the Dutch Oldschool. Imagine listening to those bands when you are a teenager or adolescent and experiencing that scene. It is not hard to understand that 30+ years later, when midlife-crisis strikes, people try to replicate that feeling of being part of a musical revolution. Therefore, bands like Necrotesque and Graceless (which is one of the more contemporary bands we look up to), who tap into that original sound and vibe, receive huge support.

You play death metal influenced by, among other things, the old school. Today, the band can't avoid comparisons, but I would like to know how the idea to start NECROTESQUE was born, who was and is your metal idol? Where do you want to move your band? Are you attracted to large foreign festivals, for example, are you willing to go on tour with a more famous band?

The idea of the band and it’s direction was a joined idea of me and Arjan. We just wanted to make a no-bullshit death metal band. No (or as few as possible) solos and weird cross-over adventures. Just old school death metal. Where we want to go? Everywhere! Large festivals, small venues, we like to play them all. As long as we have an audience, we want to play. We get quite some energy from performing. So yeah, a tour would be nice!


When I started my blog six years ago, I had a vision that I would try to support bands that are not so much popular, or they are lost in underground. To let the world knows about them. I think I'm doing quite well, at least according to the responses. How do you approach the promotion of your music? Do you rely upon the label or do you send the CDs for various reviews by yourself? For example, I buy albums that I really enjoy. What about you? Are you also fans who often support your colleagues? Do you go to concerts?

Yeah you’re doing quite well. We see quite some of your posts!

Our promotion we mostly do ourselves. We (me and Arjan particullary) are very impatient, so waiting for someone else to promote us is quite difficult, haha. We advertise, contact blogs,mags and vlogs. All kinds of way to make our music known to the world. And we visit other gigs as well. To just enjoy the bands, but also to network with venues and other bands. We have also organised some gigs and invited other bands to play with us.

On the one hand, today the new band has a lot of opportunities to make themselves more known, but on the other hand, there are a huge number of groups and the fans are getting lost in this big metal sea. A lot of people just download mp3s from the internet and instead of to visit the concert they prefer to spit poisonous saliva on Facebook. How do modern technologies affect you as NECROTESQUE? What do you think about downloading music, google metalists, streaming music, etc.?

We encourage people to share our music. We do not play a genre which will ever make us rich. We play it because we listen to it ourselves and have a lot of ideas for songs. We have merchandise and i hope when people see us play they like us and buy a shirt, cd, cap, patch, etc .. that way we have money for new recordings and new merch. The music people share is a way to the be able to sell this merch.


I like to ask the musicians what death metal means to them. How would they define it, whether it is more the philosophy and lifestyle thing for them or "just" relaxation? What does it mean for you? How do you perceive and experience it?

For me, it’s just what sounds good to me. It gives me energy and calmes me when i’m busy in the head.

Finally, a classic but important question. What is NECROTESQUE planning in the upcoming months? Where can we see you at the stage and when will you visit the Czech republic?

We have a couple of nice gigs planned and even a couple in the Czech republic!

Ave NECROTESQUE! Zdravím do undergroundu. Doufám, že je u vás vše v pořádku. Mělo by, máte na kontě letos první dlouhohrající skvělé album své kariéry. Musím se přiznat, že mě doslova přikovalo na zeď. Je temné, energické, řeže ostrou hranou nože. Je hodně slyšet, že jste odvedli skvělou práci a taky velká porce talentu. Jak vnímáš novou desku v souvislosti s vaší předchozí tvorbou? Kam jak jste se chtěli posunout a v čem jsou podle tebe nahrávky odlišné?

Ahoj Jakube! Nejprve děkuji za pochvalu! Naše první EP, které jsme vydali, bylo testovací, abychom zjistili, jestli lidi zajímá hudba, kterou máme v hlavě. Zdá se, že se jim líbí, takže jsme se hned po vydání našeho prvního EP vrhli na psaní nového materiálu. Pořád máme spoustu nápadů, které chceme přetavit v super skladby, ale zároveň víme, že by se to nemělo přehánět. Takže musíme držet tempo. U nového alba jsme se hodně naučili, co se týče zvuku, který chceme vytvořit a myslíme si, že je to oproti EP krok vpřed.

„The Perpetuated Festering“ v sobě obsahuje všechny atributy dobrého death metalu. Pro mě osobně se jedná o desku, ke které se hrozně rád vracím. Jakým způsobem vznikala? Jak skládají nový materiál NECROTESQUE?

První EP vzniklo doma během období corony/lockdownu. S Arjanem jsme doma napsali kytarové party, přihodili pár vodítek pro bicí a poslali to zbytku kapely, ať si s tím poradí. To nám vyhovuje. Takže jsme to tentokrát udělali dost podobně. Naštěstí jsme měli nyní víc času na zkoušení skladeb, takže jsme si také mohli vyzkoušet některé věci společně, což se podle mě opravdu odráží v energii této nové desky.


Musím potvrdit, že se mi líbí produkce alba. Pořád mě to nutí na hi-fi věži přidávat volume. Kdo vám vytvořil zvuk, který je krutý, surový a zároveň temný a živočišný. Jak se vám s ním spolupracovalo a proč právě on? V jakém studiu jste nahrávali a jak vše probíhalo?

Veškerou předprodukci jsme dělali doma. Re-amping kytary a basy a poté jsme to poslali na mix, Rickovi @RaRecordings, který dělal i naše první EP. Nahrál také bicí pro první EP a nové album. Jsme s ním opravdu spokojení, protože je na stejné vlně jako my. Prostě nahrává skladby a nesnaží se k tomu přidávat moc hovadin. Ať je to syrové. Žádné časování bicích atd. Vokály jsme částečně nahrávali ve studiu, no a zbytek jsme dělali u našich bubeníků doma (mají doma taky malé studio).

Album je opatřeno mrtvolným obalem. Kdo je jeho autorem? Jak jste motiv vybírali a jak souvisí s hudbou na novince?

Přes internet jsme kontaktovali umělce, jehož díla se nám velmi líbila. Nikdo z nás nemá talent na kreslení, takže to byl nejlepší nápad. Jeho jméno na Facebooku je Dedy Badic Art. Opravdu přesně vystihl myšlenku, kterou jsme mu sdělili. Téma je rozšířením našeho prvního EP s názvem "The Necrotic Grotesque", odkud pochází název naší kapely. Jeden z veršů v textu Nekrotické Grotesky zní "Hnijící kapka masa bez kůže", takže nám přišlo logické pokračovat v "Neustálém hnití" ... prostě hnít dál, jak se říká!


Toulám se podsvětím již přes třicet let a do Holandska si chodím pro muziku vlastně na jistotu. Myslím, že máme podobnou náturu i vkus, co se týká metalu. Mám vaše kapely hodně rád a pečlivě sleduji vaši scénu. Možná vám i trošku závidím, my máme u nás jen pár death metalových smeček, které stojí za to. Čím si to vysvětluješ, že zrovna u vás se death metalu tolik daří? Jak vnímáš vaši scénu, fanoušky, labely?

Nizozemsko bylo koncem 80. let spolu se Švédskem centrem rozvoje evropského death metalového zvuku. Gorefest, Pestilence a Asphyx jsou pravděpodobně svatou trojicí holandské staré školy. Představte si, že byste tyhle kapely poslouchali jako teenageři nebo dospívající a zažívali tuhle scénu. Není těžké pochopit, že o více než 30 let později, když přijde krize středního věku, se lidé snaží zopakovat ten pocit, že jsou součástí hudební revoluce. Proto se kapelám jako Necrotesque a Graceless (což je jedna z těch současnějších kapel, ke kterým vzhlížíme), které využívají ten původní zvuk a atmosféru, dostává obrovské podpory.

Hrajete death metal ovlivněný starou školou. Dnes se vlastně kapela nemůže vyhnout srovnání, mě by ale zajímalo, jak vlastně vznikl nápad založit NECROTESQUE, kdo byl a je vaším vzorem a kam vaši kapelu chcete posunout? Lákají vás třeba velké zahraniční festivaly, jste ochotni vyrazit na turné s nějakou slavnější smečkou?

Myšlenka kapely a jejího směřování byla společným nápadem mým a Arjana. Chtěli jsme prostě udělat death metalovou kapelu, která se nebude zabývat žádnými hovadinami. Žádná (nebo co nejméně) sól a podivná crossoverová dobrodružství. Prostě death metal ze staré školy. Kam jsme se chtěli dostat? Všude! Velké festivaly, malé sály, všude bychom rádi hráli. Dokud máme publikum, chceme hrát. Z vystupování máme docela dost energie. Takže jo, turné by bylo fajn!


Když jsem před šesti lety zakládal svoje stránky, měl jsem vizi, že se budu snažit podporovat kapely, které podle mě nejsou tolik na očích. Dát o nich vědět světu. Myslím, že se mi to celkem daří, alespoň podle ohlasů. Jak přistupujete k propagaci vy? Necháváte to na labelu nebo sami posíláte CD různě na recenze? Já si třeba alba, která mě opravdu baví, kupuji. Jak jste na tom vy? Jste také fanoušci, co rádi a často podporují své kolegy? Chodíte na koncerty? Paříte?

Ano, vedeš si poměrně dobře. Vidíme docela dost tvých příspěvků! Naši propagaci si většinou děláme sami. Jsme (já a Arjan) velmi netrpěliví, takže čekat, až nás bude propagovat někdo jiný, je docela obtížné, haha. Děláme si reklamu, kontaktujeme blogy, časopisy a vlogy. Všemi možnými způsoby se snažíme, aby se o naší hudbě dozvěděl celý svět. A taky navštěvujeme další koncerty. Abychom si je prostě užili, ale taky abychom navázali kontakty s kluby a dalšími kapelami. Také jsme uspořádali několik koncertů a pozvali další kapely, aby si s námi zahrály.

Na jednou stranu má dnes začínající kapela spoustu možností, jak o sobě dát vědět, ale zase na druhou stranu, skupin je obrovské množství a fanoušci se v nich ztrácejí. Hodně lidí jen stahuje mp3 z internetu a místo koncertu raději plive jedovaté sliny na facebooku. Jak vás, jako NECROTESQUE ovlivňují moderní technologie? Co si myslíš o stahování muziky, google metalistech, streamování muziky apod.?

Nabádáme lidi, aby sdíleli naši hudbu. Nehrajeme žánr, na kterém bychom někdy zbohatli. Hrajeme ho proto, že ho sami posloucháme a máme spoustu nápadů na skladby. Máme merch a doufám, že když nás lidi uvidí hrát, zalíbíme se jim a koupí si tričko, cd, čepici, nášivku atd... tak máme peníze na nové nahrávky a nový merch. Hudba, kterou lidé sdílejí, je způsob, jak můžeme tento merch prodávat.


S oblibou se ptám muzikantů na to, co pro ně znamená death metal. Jak by jej definovali, jestli je pro ně spíše filozofií a životním stylem nebo „jen“ relaxem. Co znamená pro tebe? Jak jej vnímáš a prožíváš?

Pro mě je to prostě to, co mi zní dobře. Dodává mi to energii a uklidňuje mě to, když je hlava zaneprázdněná.

Na závěr klasická, ale důležitá otázka. Co chystají NECROTESQUE v nejbližších měsících? Kde vás můžeme vidět na koncertě a kdy navštívíte Českou republiku?

Máme naplánováno několik koncertů a dokonce i několik v České republice! Přijďte se na nás podívat 8. září na "United in Brutality 2023" v Kempu U Ferdinanda (doufám, že to říkám správně, haha) a 9. září v Mladé Boleslavi v klubu Orthodox.

Je na čase se se všemi rozloučit. Poslední jídlo před popravou. Falešný soud a nenávist všech okolo. Nikdy jsem svoji pravdu neodvolal. Stále věřím v peklo a moc dobře vím, že Bůh neexistuje. Stačí se rozhlédnout kolem sebe, stačí, když půjdeš chvilku s davem. Označili mě jako prokletého, zavřeli mě do studené kobky. Společností mi byla jenom tma a vlastní svědomí. Už jenom pár okamžiků a budu se houpat ve větru. Podívejte, už je mrtvý!

Abych pravdu řekl, tak se na onen svět těším. Moc dobře totiž vím, že v něm budu poslouchat jen dobrou muziku. Dnes volím holandské tmáře NECROTESQUE, se kterými jsme se na našich stránkách již jednou setkali (odkaz na recenzi EP z roku 2021 a krátký rozhovor je dole pod článkem). Novinka je logickým pokračováním věcí minulých. Temnota, chlad, vztek a špína - to jsou hlavní atributy nového alba "The Perpetuated Festering".


Při poslechu novinky si opravdu připadám, jako bych se procházel v Hádově říši. Potkávám duše zemřelých, vážné postavy démonů. Společně usedneme k jednomu stolu a kýváme spokojeně hlavou. Holanďané se volně inspirují ve své tvorbě u kapel jako jsou SINISTER, ASPHYX, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, SIX FEET UNDER, OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, DYING FETUS, DEATH. Dělají to s vlastním výrazem a nápady. Nahrávka je velmi dobře zvukově ošetřena, deska doslova pálí v rukou. Je jako kus rozžhaveného železa, které vám NECROTESQUE hodí do rukou. Popáleniny třetího stupně jsou jasným důkazem, že se skladby opravdu povedly. Zní jako černé ozvěny ze záhrobí. Zástupy prokletých bědují nad svým osudem. Baví mě "The Perpetuated Festering" poslouchat stále dokola. Nejlépe ve tmě, když město nad námi dávno spí. Jsem moc rád, že jsem se mohl na tenhle výlet bez konce vydat. Jedná se totiž o prvotřídní smrtící kov podle starých, poctivých pravidel. Žádné zbytečnosti, žádné kompromisy, ale rovnou útok na solar plexus. Stále věřím v peklo a moc dobře vím, že Bůh neexistuje. Stačí se rozhlédnout kolem sebe, stačí, když půjdeš chvilku s davem. Masakr z prokletých katakomb! Temný death metal ostrý jako břitva!

It's time to say goodbye to everyone. Last meal before the execution. The mock trial and the hatred of everyone around. I never recanted my truth. I still believe in hell and I know full well there is no God. Just look around you, just walk with the crowd for a while. I've been branded as cursed, locked in a cold dungeon. I had only the darkness and my own conscience to keep me company. Just a few more moments and I'll be swaying in the wind. Look, he's already dead!

To tell you the truth, I'm looking forward to the other world. Because I know very well that in it I will only listen to good music. Today I choose Dutch darkies NECROTESQUE, whom we have already met once on our website (link to the review of the EP from 2021 and a short interview is below the article). The new one is a logical continuation of the past ones. Darkness, coldness, anger and dirt - these are the main attributes of the new album "The Perpetuated Festering".


Listening to the news, I really feel like I'm walking in Hades' realm. I'm meeting the souls of the dead, serious demon figures. We sit down together at a table and nod our heads in satisfaction. The Dutch are freely inspired in their work by bands like SINISTER, ASPHYX, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, SIX FEET UNDER, OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, DYING FETUS, DEATH. They do it with their own expression and ideas. The recording is very well sound treated, the record literally burns in your hands. It's like a piece of hot iron that NECROTESQUE throws into your hands. The third degree burns are a clear proof that the songs are really good. They sound like black echoes from beyond the grave. Crowds of the damned lament their fate. I enjoy listening to "The Perpetuated Festering" over and over again. Preferably in the dark, when the city above us is long asleep. I'm so glad I was able to take this trip with no end in sight. For this is first class death metal by the old, honest rules. No frills, no compromises, but a straight assault on the solar plexus. I still believe in hell, and I know full well there is no God. Just look around you, just walk with the crowd for a while. Massacre of the cursed catacombs! Dark, razor-sharp death metal!

Procházím se galerií smrti a přemýšlím, jak vlastně vypadá ďábel. Jako šílená bestie? Jako tvář bez masa? Jako přízrak? Spíš bych ho viděl jako krásného mladého muže s jedovatým jazykem. Charismatického, který dokáže pobláznit davy. Je tak lehké mu uvěřit. Umí se měnit, umí uštknout a znásilnit naše těla i duše. Přemýšlím o tom a poslouchám u toho novou desku holandských NECROTESQUE. A při každém dalším setkání má Satan jasnější kontury.

Mám rád death metal v této podobě. Poctivý, démonický, s dobrým zvukem, chladnými melodiemi, s vokálem bestie, s ďábelským obalem. Hraje se zde poctivě, hezky od srdce a album se opravdu dobře poslouchá. Má v sobě pradávnou temnou energii. 


NECROTESQUE jsou démoni hrající a inspirující se kapelami typu ASPHYX, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, SIX FEET UNDER, OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, DYING FETUS. Přidávají navíc spoustu svých nápadů. Je pro mě velmi příjemné, procházet se galerií smrti za zvuků "The Necrotic Grotesque". Naleznu zde totiž vše, co se mi na death metalu líbí. Touhu ničit, pochopit nejčernější tmu, nejtemnější stránky lidské mysli. Mrazivé melodie se mi zadřely pod kůži, nakazili i mou krev. Kolem nohou se plazí několik hadů s uhrančivým pohledem. Poslové z pekla čekají, jsou předzvěstí, pozváním. S chutí přijímám, takhle má znít pravý, nefalšovaný smrtící kov, takhle mají znít ozvěny za záhrobí. Katakomby s nápisem NECROTESQUE nad dveřmi byly otevřeny a vydaly pradávná svědectví o utrpení, nenávisti, o čirém zlu. Musím napsat, že je pro mě album velkým překvapením a vlastně i příslibem do budoucna. Nahrávka je hnisavým krvavým otiskem, cejchem, který mi vypálila kapela na tělo. Na CD může být s klidem napsáno - old school death metal vysoké kvality. Takhle zní pravé peklo ze starých dobrých časů. Smrt je velmi blízko. Zasekla do mě svůj dráp. Album, které vás vykostí zaživa!

I walk through the gallery of death and wonder what the devil actually looks like. Like a mad beast? A face without flesh? Like a phantom? I'd rather see him as a handsome young man with a poisonous tongue. A charismatic one who can charm the crowds. He's so easy to believe. He can change, he can bite and rape our bodies and souls. I'm thinking about it and listening to the new album by the Dutch NECROTESQUE. And with every encounter, Satan's contours become clearer.

I like death metal in this form. Honest, demonic, with a good sound, cold melodies, with beast vocals, with a devilish cover. The playing is honest, nice from the heart and the album is really good to listen to. It has ancient dark energy to it.


NECROTESQUE are demons playing and inspired by bands like ASPHYX, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, SIX FEET UNDER, OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, DYING FETUS. They also add a lot of their own ideas. I find it very pleasant to walk through the gallery of death to the sounds of "The Necrotic Grotesque". I find everything I like about death metal here. The desire to destroy, to understand the blackest darkness, the darkest aspects of the human mind. The chilling melodies got under my skin, infected my blood. A few snakes crawl around my feet, with a bewitching gaze. The messengers from hell are waiting, a harbinger, an invitation. I accept with gusto, this is how true, unadulterated death metal should sound, this is how echoes from beyond the grave should sound. The catacombs, with the inscription NECROTESQUE above the door, have been opened and have given ancient testimonies of suffering, of hatred, of pure evil. I have to write that the album is a great surprise for me and actually a promise for the future. The record is a festering bloody imprint, a brand burned on my body by the band. On the CD it can be safely written - old school death metal of high quality. This is what true hell from the good old days sounds like. Death is very close. It's got its claw in me. An album that will bone you alive!

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Let me begin by expressing our gratitude for this opportunity to make ourselves known to the beautiful country that is the Czech Republic!

To answer your question; Necrotesque was founded in the spring of 2020 by Arjan (guitars) and myself (bass guitar). After a considerable amount of experience in previous bands that were mainly focussed on Doom Metal (Dead End and Into the Arcane), we had the desire to take it up a notch and start writing and playing our interpretation of uncompromising Death Metal. We invited our good friend Harald (ex-Dead End, Pictura Poesis and Daemonos) to pick up his drumsticks for us and he gladly accepted. After a few auditions, Lodewijk (ex-Plague) completed the band as vocalist. The four of us came together and sure enough the sound and feeling of our combined input created a Death Metal variation that hovers somewhere between the original Swedish Old School and the American School. Maybe that’s something typically Dutch. If we consider our predecessors; Pestilence, Gorefest, Altar and Asphyx to a certain extend we might come to the conclusion that Dutch Death Metal is a melting pot of the two greatest Death Metal schools.


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

All guitar tracks are home recordings. Drums and vocals were recorded in a studio. The production and mastering was done by Rick, drummer of Dutch Heavy Metal legends Martyr and owner of Rarerecordings. Apart from the occasional annoyed wife or neighbour, the whole process went smooth.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

Our debut e.p. “The Necrotic Grotesque” is currently available for digital purchase on Bandcamp. In February 2022, Brutal Insanity Records, a fantastic Dutch underground label, will be releasing our e.p. on cassette (50 pieces) and CD (200 pieces). We are also considering releasing our e.p. on vinyl.


Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

The lyrics for the first track on the e.p. “The Necrotic Grotesque” were written by Arjan (guitars). It sets the stage for whom the Necrotic Grotesque actually are; vile beasts, lurking in the depths of a fictional hell, feeding on the blood and flesh of the doomed.

The lyrics for the second track, “Demonic Sadist”, were written by me. I come from a totalitarian religious upbringing and had to need to ventilate some of my frustrations. That is why I wrote about a fictitious entity who punishes those who were religious fanatics, assuming they would go to heaven as a reward for being pious but actually putting themselves up for eternal suffering.

The lyrics for the four remaining tracks were all written by Lodewijk. “ResErection” is about a person who revives corpses by having intercourse with them.

“Permafrost” tells the story of the war between Russia and Finland in 1939, also known as the Winter War. It paints a picture of how many soldiers were frozen to death.

“Mental Automutilation” is very much open to interpretation. Everyone has issues with something. Giving in to obsession is one way to go. Fighting it is another option. What the subject in this song chooses is up for the listener to decide.

Lastly, “Relentless Assault” was chosen by me as the title because I wanted to pay tribute to the first Death Metal band I was ever exposed to. The band “Relentless Assault” were a group of teenagers in my hometown of Gemert, the Netherlands. I was probably 15 years old when they performed at the school I was attending. Being blown away by the aggressive drumming and hellish vocals, I decided that one day I would be playing in a Death Metal band. That dream come true. Lodewijk then wrote the lyrics for this track drawing from his experience in historical re-enactment and his passion for Viking history.


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

I drew a sketch of the logo and it was elaborated by an external illustrator. Arjan created the rest of the artwork and set up social media and our website. We appreciate the importance of digital media, especially in these difficult times in which it is virtually impossible to just play gigs and reach out to people the way we would prefer; up close and personal. We are getting reports from all corners of the world on how our music is received in a fantastic way, from Mexico to Russia. Without social media this would have been nearly impossible so we are very grateful for that.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We have chosen to collaborate with Brutal Insanity Records from the Netherlands. They are a smaller label, invested in the underground scene. The reason why we’ve chosen for them is because of the level of support they give. Our individual experience with bigger labels is not the best, to say the least. We appreciate a label when they actually visit the gigs we will be playing. A label that speaks through actions, not just words. And we know Roy and Thomas from Brutal Insanity Records as fanatical music fans who will do just that.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

We are inspired by our Dutch predecessors; Gorefest, Pestilence, Altar and Asphyx. We simply cannot deny that they have paved the way for the current Dutch Death Metal scene. We also appreciate the American school. Bands like Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under, Nile, Dying Fetus and ultimately Death. Then there is the Swedish school with Entombed, Dismember, Unleashed and Grave. But we also enjoy newer bands like LIK and Carnation.


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Our music was released just a mere few days ago, so we are now in the process of booking our first official gigs. We prefer gigs where the audience is passionate about music. It doesn’t really matter if it’s indoors or outdoors as long as the people attending are there for one reason; to mosh as violently as they possibly can. We have a great passion for Eastern-Europe and we have ties with Czech, Slovak and Slovenian venues so we are looking forward to touring. Hopefully this will be possible in 2022.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

Now our debut e.p. is released, we are in the process of writing our first full-length album. Meanwhile, we just want to play gigs, everywhere! Our ultimate goal would be to be considered one of the Dutch Death Metal bands who paved the way for the next generation of Death Metal bands. Plus, we want fans to reminisce and say in a few decades; “Remember that Necrotesque gig? That was fucking brutal!”
