Interview - AGELESS SUMMONING - Demonic, morbid death metal from the old dusty catacombs!

Interview with death metal band from United Kingdom - AGELESS SUMMONING.

Answered vocalist Ali Lauder, thank you!

AGELESS SUMMONING - Corrupting The Entempled Plane (2023):

Ave AGELESS SUMMONING! I haven’t found any interview in the Czech language with you, yet. So please, first introduce the band to our readers who don’t know you. You could start from the early beginnings and describe the whole AGELESS SUMMONING history.

Hail! Ageless Summoning formed in 2016 when we were at Netherlands Deathfest. We talked about doing a new band inspired by the Steve Tucker era of Morbid Angel, Immolation, and the slow epics of early Nile. We’ve known each other for years through different bands and wanted to make a style of death metal we love and felt was underrepresented.

I’m just listening to your new record „Corrupting The Entempled Plane“ and I feel like as if I am closed in some tomb together with IMMOLATION, MORBID ANGEL, INCANTATION, DRAWN AND QUARTERED, DIABOLIC. The record has a great dark sound. Where did you record it and how satisfied you are with it? Did you have the "last word" concerning the resulting sound?

Great, that’s what we were going for! We recorded drums and vocals at Sonorous Studio in Edinburgh, bass at Dalmarnock Studio in Glasgow, while the rest was done ourselves with Gregg mixing and mastering. We’re all very satisfied with it. The result is muddy and obscured and may be an acquired taste for some, but it captures the reeling malevolence we wanted to convey. Personally, it took me a bit of time to get used to it but I think that’s a good thing because it has its own unique atmosphere that isn‘t necessarily immediate. I think Gregg did a phenomenal job.

How was the new material for album „Corrupting The Entempled Plane“ created? How exactly AGELESS SUMMONING writes the music?

We would send demos to each other by email and discuss them then create new versions. It was a bit of a learning process as we figured out our style and it wasn’t until we recorded the finished album that we had a full sense of the complete sound.

"Corrupting The Entempled Plane" has a dark cover. The author is as always the great Paolo Girardi. I like his work. How did you choose the idea for the cover and what should it represent?

I had the idea of an otherworldy hellscape with portals that signalled an invasion or infiltration. The theme of the title is an intrusion upon sacred ground in an ancient outer dimension. Paolo asked for a sketch to work from so I scrawled some illegible mess and he used it to produce a masterpiece in two days. He is a true maestro.

Could you reveal us who is an author of the lyrics and what is their background? Where did you take inspiration for certain topics?

I (Ali) write the lyrics and have been interested in literature and writing since I was young. I wanted to incorporate various references and influences into the lyrics but I didn’t want to veer too far from the established death metal discipline. I drew inspiration from writers such as Joseph Campbell, Udo Becker, and Robert E. Howard, also some philosophy, literary theory, and some perhaps more unusual writers, but ultimately, the lyrics are very much death metal: brutal and portentous.

You play music as old as death metal itself. How do you perceive new directions in the death metal? I mean mixing with death core or technical death metal? Do you have any favourite bands in “modern metal”?

I don’t really keep up with a lot of new death metal bands or modern metal bands in general. I find myself sticking with a lot of firm favourites or listening to a lot of different forms of music like jazz or progressive rock and post punk. Saying that, I have heard some bands taking things to somewhere new and I think that it’s great that there’s such a strong following of death metal in any form. There’s still a lot of new places to go and I hope that things continue to grow when it comes to both traditional and innovative forms of metal.

What about AGELESS SUMMONING and concerts? Do you play a lot? Are you going on tour or you are choosing only bigger festivals? And what about touring over Europe?

We’ve only played live a few times as it’s hard to coordinate our schedules but we’re trying to get out as much as we can. We are playing the Sonic Dissonance festival in Edinburgh this September and hope to arrange a short winter tour. We would love to get over to Europe!

Can you recommend some new albums, which impressed you at the latest time?

Right now we have a lot of cool death and extreme metal happening in Scotland. Here’s just a few bands to check out:

Do you know and listen to some metal bands from the Czech Republic?

We like the awesome Heaving Earth and watched them live on the day we formed!

We are slowly approaching the end of the interview so I would like to ask one more philosophical question. How would you define the death metal style? What represents this music for you and why did you choose exactly this genre?

To me, true death metal has a brutal sound and dark atmosphere that is both human and inhuman. It speaks to something primal and ancient but also something otherworldy or hellish. When I first discovered death metal it was the sheer extremity and power that grabbed me but that gave way to more profound explorations.

What AGELESS SUMMONING is planning for the next few months?

We are close to finishing up writing for our second album and we hope to be recording it this winter.

Thank you for the interview and I wish you a lot of sold CDs, hundreds of crazy fans and tons of great ideas.

Thank you! And thanks for interviewing us! We hope to play in Czech Republic and drink all of your dark Krusovice very soon!
