A few questions - interview with death metal band from Chile - SKULLPTURE.
Recenze/review - SKULLPTURE - A Horrifying Death (2023):
Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?
Skullpture is a death metal band formed by Daniel Rodríguez and Alfredo Zunino in Santiago, Chile in 2009, the next year we release our Demo 2010 with four original songs.
In 2011 independently we release our first LP called Skullpture…The Sinister Art, later reissued in 2016. At the end of 2017 and after different temporary formations, a stable line-up was achieved consisting of Francisco Quiero on vocals, Pedro Donoso on guitar, Daniel Rodríguez on bass and Francisco Sereño on drums. With the clear concept of musically evolving and professionalizing the sound of our productions, we begin to work on the composition of a second LP entitled Reborn in Decay, recorded, mixed and mastered in mid-2019 at the Nihil Records studio, by Sergio Rojas.
After recording RID, Francisco Quiero would leave the band for professional reasons, but in July 2021 Francisco Quiero returned to take charge of the voices again, with the aim of recording a new work, which was published on January 15, 2023 under the name "A Horrifying Death"
The name of the band was taken from the song “Skullptures” of Autopsy’s “Acts of the Unspeakable”, who spokes basically about graveyards, corpses, skulls and build sculptures with it, you know: death metal.
Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?
"A Horrifying Death" was recorded during June and July 2022 at Nihil Records, the recording studio of Sergio Rojas, a renowned national sound engineer who for some time now has worked with great exponents of chilean metal. He was in charge of the recording, the mixing and mastering.
The work at Nihil Records was very satisfactory from every point of view for us. Because we had worked with Sergio Rojas on our previous production, who also play death metal with his band Torture Machine, which made the whole process very pleasant, fast for which we are also very grateful to Nihil Records.
How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?
The production of the physical material was in charge of Adirondack Black Mass, a label from NY- USA, and we agreed to make 350 copies in CD format.
On the other hand we also plan to release it on cassette in another 200 copies through Proglótida Gravida, in what would be the first edition of this type of production by this chilean zine.
Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?
They are mainly written by Francisco Quiero and me (Daniel).
And through the years we have gone through different themes such as horror, gore, death or anti-religion. But currently we developed the concepts that inspired the cover art of "A Horrifying Death": mainly the death, the insignificance and fragility of human existence, contempt for the christian creed and different sadistic forms of punishment for human beings, something that we wanted to deepen in this work, where our sources of inspiration have been diverse, from the recent history on the chilean culture, as well as classic horror literature.
Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?
Tomas Reid, a chilean artist was the one who made the remake of our logo.
About the graphics and designs for all our social networks, these are made by Andrés Navarro, a friend and fan of the band who supports us with these issues.
Regarding this, we believe that it is important to consider that many people today listen to you through these media and the visual part is also important and must be consistent with the music that you play.
Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?
We decided work with Adirondack Black Mass, we’re satisfied with their work, diffusion and how they do it to spread our music in America and Europe.
Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?
Our main influences have always been American death metal, bands like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Massacre, Cancer, Obituary, for name a few. But also European extreme metal, bands like Napalm Death, Benediction, Entombed, Nihilist, Carnage for example.
Another story is the South American metal: Pentagram (CHL), Atomic Aggressor, Necrosis, Apostasy, Totten Korps, old Sepultura, Sarcófago, Vulcano…to name a few bands, they really paved the way for how extreme metal should be done.
Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?
Yes, in general the response to "A Horrifying Death" has been very good, particularly from Zines, Webzines and our fans from all over the world, which makes us very satisfied and motivated to continue on this path.
How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?
In general we have had quite a few presentations throughout these more than 10 years. Both in the capital and in regions of our country.
In any case, we would like to be able to expand our music to festivals in the short term and why not outside of Chile as well.
What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?
Today we are enjoying our recent release, having some concerts presenting it. In any case, we hope to be able to start composing this year to prepare a new material, so we invite everyone to be very attentive to any news.
About our goals have always been to be a brutal band, to improve every time we set out to write something new and to have our music spread to ears thirsty for death metal.
How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?
You can contact us through all our social networks and also through our email skullpturechile@gmail.com.
Finally thanks Deadly Storm Zine for the space and consider us to be part of this great and brutal Zine.
Thanx for the interview.
