Ave OUTRE-TOMBE! I have never found any interview with you in Czech language. I will ask you first to introduce the band to the readers who do not know you yet. You can start from the beginning and take us throw the whole history of OUTRE-TOMBE.
Hey man! Cobra here. Outre-Tombe plays death metal inspired by 80’s and early 90’s metal. We started somewhere in 2009/2010 and it was mainly for fun, drinking beer etc. We released a demo in 2012, which was mostly thrash oriented. We then switched to death metal and started what became our first album, released in 2015. After that Danger left, to be replaced by Désastre, then came Nécrovortex and Abysse Mortifère.
This year, you have just released the new album, Abysse mortifère“. Again, it's a dark, harsh and honest death metal. Did you access to the recording process differently than last time or did you choose verified practices?
We changed everything. The album was recorded almost entierly live in the rehearsal place, with two guitars plus drums at the same time. We then added the bass and vocals. We had V.K. (Vassafor, Temple Nightside, ex-Diocletian) to do the mix/master. The goal was to distance ourselves from modern productions to recapture the spirit of the albums we realy like.
The new album seems to me more complicated, perhaps initially less accessible, at the same time incredibly dark and evil. Was it intentional? How did the album originate and how did you compose the music?
I don’t think the new album is more complicated than the others, but certainly less accessible haha! It was clearly intentionnal to go in that direction. The songs were in work since 2019. Because of the Covid laws, curfew and stuff we had a really hard time rehearsing for most of 2020 and early 2021.Basically it was pretty much illegal. Our way of recording was also more easy to do since studio was not an option with curfew in winter/sping 2021.
I have a „Abysse mortifère“ in my MP3 player and I have to say that this album literally engulfed me. These are not just great ideas but also sound is simply devastating. I'm sitting in the tram, and suddenly I find myself shaking my legs. I have a feeling to start moshing. If I weren’t so old, I would probably start to. Where did you record and who is signed under mastering?
We recorded with Alexandre Landry, whom I also play with in Sedimentum. He has a mobile studio that we already used with Sedimentum so we knew what we were doing. We recorded vocals with Olivier Girard, the guy who recorded firt two albums and then, as mentionned before, V.K. took charge of the mastering.
Who is the author of lyrics on „Abysse mortifère“? What are they talking about? Where do you get inspiration for themes?
Lyrics are done by me and Crachat. It’s mainly about horror tales, death, morbid elements of history and sci-fi weirdness. We get inspiration from movies, novels, life experiences, etc.
Who is signed under the cover of „Abysse mortifère“? I like his work very much. How did you choose the motif for cover?
The artwork was done by Putrid Matt from the US! We had the idea about the spider for a while and Matt captured it perfectly!
When we look back at the beginning ... What was the first impulse to found the band? And why the death metal? It's not the typical style which can would give you great "glory".
The first impulse was to have fun between us, playing music and getting wasted. As time went by we got better at our instruments, made better songs and things kinda played themself out. We played death metal because I think that’s what we were better at. We played thrash before, but we were looking for a more «evil» sound and the bands we really all like are 80’s / 90’s death metal bands.
From your music is possible to feel that you are influenced by American death metal school and as well by the old European bands. How do you feel about it as a fan? Do you prefer the original death metal of the 1990s or do you get inspiration as well from the new albums? If yes so I am wondering which bands had the greatest impact on OUTRE-TOMBE.
It’s definitely a syncretism haha! We love both to be frank! Foundamently we are more into the old bands but many recent bands had an influence on us. Bastard Priest, Morbus Chron, War Master, Innumerable forms, Spectral Voice, Undergang are all newer bands that influence us. Also, we incorporate some Crust, Thrash, D-Beat even early black metal influences to our sound. Of course in the end, our main influences would be Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Autopsy, Grave, Dismember, Carnage, etc. In an even more old school perspective, Slayer, Sepultura, Celtic Frost, Slaugher, Razor, Sodom and Bathory could be listed as well.
What about you and concerts in general? Are you a band that goes for concerts anytime you can or you are picky about where you will play? Do you have a dream, maybe a group you would like to go with for a tour or festival, a city where you would like to perform?
Being from Québec, we have to drive a lot if we want to play in more than 3 cities each year haha! So we tend to accept most of the gigs. We tend to play in the surrounding provinces, we played the US once and we are now reaching for Europe! The later being our dream as a band, we are really exited! Also, we already played with a lot of our favourite bands, and the ones we haven’t played with are pretty much disbanded haha!
We are slowly approaching the end of the interview so I would like to ask one more philosophical question. How would you define the death metal style? What represents this music for you and why did you choose exactly this genre?
I think death metal is a metal genre that combine the agression of thrash metal with the heavyness of previous genres, but in a «morbid» way. It’s not just music about death, it must sound like death. For these reasons, I think a lot of modern metal is falsely categorised as death metal. That being said, death metal can take many forms and it’s still one of my favourite music genre. Nothing beat a dumb mean riff with double bass drum and angry screams, followed by a D-beat or blastbeat haha! I guess we all like other metal genre too, death metal is what unite us as a band.
What OUTRE-TOMBE is planning for the next few months?
A lot of shows in Canada! We’ll play Montreal, Sherbrooke, Toronto, Ottawa and probably westen Canada very soon!
I'm going to listen again your new album „Abysse mortifère“. I have to say that for me personally, this is basically a perfect death metal work. Totally inferno. I wish big success to your record and to get this album to as many people as is possible. This album deserves it. I wish you all the best in your personal life. Whatever you do and the last words are yours. If you want to tell something to fans, labels, promoters, you have space here..... Thank you for the interview and I am looking forward to seeing you live!
Thanks a lot man! All the best to you too! A huge thanks to our fans who bought the new album! The response was great and we can’t wait to see you guys again live! Keep an open eye for shows! Děkuji a brzy na viděnou!
