Recenze/review - COFFIN CREEP - Voids (2021):

Ave COFFIN CREEP! I haven’t found any interview in the Czech language with you, yet. So please, first introduce the band to our readers who don’t know you. You could start from the early beginnings and describe the whole COFFIN CREEP history.

Well, we started this band back in 2014 to shut ourselves off from the outside world and to have our own little bubble where we could hook up and do what we enjoy the most - which is writing, playing, and recording music. In the very beginning the idea was to just do grinding death metal and to shit out demos, as the whole "doing releases and playing gigs" wasn't even on our agenda. But as soon as we got together and started hammering out songs it quickly became obvious that we'd spawned something much more than that, and it became more serious so to say. We never wanted to belong to a specific scene, and we strictly write and play shit that we truly dig ourselves. If someone outside the band happens to enjoy it, that's really awesome ofcourse. But if no one would even notice us we wouldn't give a fuck and still do what we do. We are all friends since way back before Coffin Creep, so this is truly a vissel for us to do what we really enjoy.

I’m just listening to your new record „Voids“ and I feel like as if I am closed in some tomb together with ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, GRAVE, ENTRAILS. The record has a great Swedish sound. Where did you record it and how satisfied you are with it? Did you have the "last word" concerning the resulting sound?

None of those bands were of any influence on us haha! Maybe Grave sunconciously. Our main influence was and will always be Black Sabbath. But there were tons of influences this time around that wasn't death metal at all. One other thing that was part of the original idea with the band is that we will always record our stuff by ourselves in our rehearsal room, so that's what we did. This time we wanted a fatter sound as opposed to our previous stuff which was really dirty. We are more satisfied with this one than we have ever been, and no one but the three of us will ever have the last words regarding any thing Coffin Creep.

How was the new material for album „Voids“ created? How exactly COFFIN CREEP writes the music?

Usually some one of us has an idea for a song made up in the head, or sometimes just a riff. Then we bring it to the table and sort of hammer it out or piece stuff together. Then the song kind of takes on a life of it's own and morphs into whatever it's supposed to morph into. And if we feel it, we keep playing it and if we don't we simply scrap it or put it aside for the future.

„Voids“ has dark and morbid cover art. Who is an author? I really like his work. How did you actually choose the idea of the cover and what exactly illustrates?

It's actually a she. Her name is Anu Bring. She is from Finland and we got in contact with her online some years back when she had done a painting that we liked based on one of our tunes. We just stayed in contact and asked if she wanted to be our illustrator for our 2018 EP "Wormfood", and then we asked her again for "Voids" simply because we like her and her stuff is awesome! The idea for the artwork is based on the lyrics for the first two songs on the record.

Could you reveal us who is an author of the lyrics and what is their background? Where did you take inspiration for certain topics?

Our drummer and singer, Padde (me haha) writes all the lyrics. I took inspiration from my thoughts, experiences, and basically what I think would sound cool over the music.

The new album was released by Grind to Death Records. This label has a very good name in the underground scene and does a very good job. However, didn't you want to release a record in some bigger label? Did you ask some other label? How you are actually satisfied with Grind to Death Records?

The only thing we really care about with a label is that they got the passion and fire with what they do. Grind To Death was perfect. We don't care if the label is big or small.

You play typical, classical Swedish old school death metal. However, references to bands such as AUTOPSY or BLACK SABBATH also appear in your work. Who actually influenced you in your beginnings and as a group you like best?

You think? Haha! Typical old school Swedish death metal is probably at the bottom of our list of influences. We don't even think about that style. Black Sabbath is our main influence, and Autopsy is the best death metal band there ever was so it's hard to not be influenced by them.

When I look through your albums, you really made a long journey. It is obvious that you as a band are still working on yourself. How often do you rehearsal together? Are you a "hard-working" band, which practices regularly or are you more „punk“ in the rehearsal task?

In the beginning we rehearsed every week or more. But now we've got kids and families that we prioritize so don't rehearse that often. But that makes our rehearsals even more special, and with that the music too. We practice pretty hardcore for gigs or recordings, but otherwise we just kind of chill and take things pretty easy.

In the case of your band, it is very good to see your development, each album is better, and you are also gradually better and better musicians. Do you have some goal, which you would like to achieve? Someone wants to release an album with a large label; other wants to play on one stage with some famous band. What about you?

We just want to do what we do and let Coffin Creep evolve into what it will evolve into. There's no big plan or goal.

Can you recommend some new albums, which impressed you at the latest time?

Not really, I'm sorry. I rarely listen to new music.

Do you know and listen to some metal bands from the Czech Republic?

I was a grindfreak way back when, and I really enjoyed Ahumado Granujo and Jig-ai!

We are slowly approaching the end of the interview so I would like to ask one more philosophical question. How would you define the Swedish death metal style? What represents this music for you and why did you choose exactly this genre?

Damn that's a good question. I wouldn't know how to define it, because that's all subjective. I really don't listen to music based on style. If I feel it I feel it, then it can be from anywhere. I really don't care. This particular style has become such a huge thing on it's own. No doubt that genre has influenced us in some way or another, but we never chose that style or labeled ourselves with it.

What COFFIN CREEP is planning for the next few months?

We'll take a little break and stay with our families and stuff, then slowly start to rehearse again and start planting the seeds for the next record.

Thank you for the interview and I wish you a lot of sold CDs, hundreds of crazy fans and tons of great ideas.

Thanks for inviting us!
