A few questions - interview with death metal band from Germany - ASCHENVATER.

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Germany - ASCHENVATER.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Hello, we are Aschenvater from Saxony, Germany. Oliver is the vocalist and writer of the lyrics. Marko is the guitarist and responsible for the instrumental composition of our songs. The band started already in 2016 as a studio project. We play old school death metal, but are also inspired by modern forms of this genre. You can find elements in our songs, like the german-language singing, that you might not expect. But that gives them the high intensity and their very own sound.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We have started to write the songs for quite a while ago. It took us some time to find the right sound and song structure. We had everything in our own hands and as Marko and Jens (a good friend of the band) are owning the goliath-studio we could also do the whole production ourselves.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

At the moment the “Landungsfeldmassaker” EP is only online available on all mayor digital stores. We released the EP together with Dead Center Production and are now also in contact with another label to release it on Vinyl. We will keep you updated trough our social media chancels and our bandcamp account.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

Oliver is writing all the lyrics for the songs. He is a big fan of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K universe. He was inspired by the 2nd great battle in the "Horus Heresy" the ”Landungsfeldmassaker”. There the traitorous warlord should be stopped immediately after his betrayal became known. After loyal troops had landed on the planet Istvaan 5, they fought an apocalyptic battle against the traitors. But they had to withdraw to their actually save landing zone. Their newly arrived allies turned out to be traitors and the loyal troops were encircled. The following massacre destroyed almost 3 entire legions and only a few manage to escape this slaughter. This had a big impact on the entire Horus Heresy. We have tried to depict the stages within the massacre through the 7 songs of the EP.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was created by Oliver's wife Anja. It should appear as if it would crumble to ashes and dissolve. The artwork of the EP is done by Marco Thundergoat. Nowadays, it's helpful to use social media such as Facebook, Instagram and co. in order to achieve a certain level of awareness. A large part of modern music industry takes place there and you can no longer avoid it. But no matter how great your internet presence is, if your music sucks and you are not really into the metal genre, you will not convince anyone from you.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takes care about you?

Dead Center Production has contact us because they liked our music and wanted to release our EP. It's great to work with such an experienced label. We have an uncomplicated communication and we are asked on every important decision. They take good care about us and we get the chance to make metalheads worldwide aware of us.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

We are definitely inspired by oldschool death metal bands like Bolt Thrower and Hail of Bullets. They have a huge impact on us. The way they have written their songs and the content of the lyrics. But there are also a lot of other influences that everyone brings in with his personal preferences for different genres. Like the sound of the Boss HM-2 from the swedish death metal bands Entombed or At The Gates. And there are also newer bands you should check out like Phrenelith, Dead Congregation and Engulfed.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Yes, we have also sent our record to some other labels. But when Dead Center Production came to us, about releasing the EP, we were most confident with them. I think at the moment it’s very difficult for bands and labels to plan releases. Without being able to perform live and going on a tour it’s hard to reach a bigger audience.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Aschenvater has been a studio project so far, but we are working on a live line-up. We want to play the EP live and also some newer songs we are already working on. It’s a great feeling to act in direct contact with the audience at small concerts. But it’s also something special to play on a festival, where you can perform in front of so many Metalheads at once. Hopefully we get the chance to play live for you in the Czech Republic soon.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

With the release of the “Landungsfeldmassaker” EP, we have taken the first big step. We will now focus on promoting the EP and getting it live on stage. Maybe there will soon be a first shirt with an incredibly iconic design. Keep your eyes open!
