Zvláštní záležitost, tahle kapela. Taková těkavá, neuchopitelná. Jakoby jste se dívali do ostrého slunce bez brýlí a viděli jen tmu. Kdysi dávno jsem se procházel starým kostelem a cítil se divně. V kostech mě hryzal chlad a chtěl jsem být sám. Místo toho na mě jako nějaké šelmy začaly útočit tváře zemřelých. Tolik bolesti, tolik mrazu jsem ještě nikdy nezažil. Mohla za to i hudba, nejenom atmosféra místa. Poslouchal jsem jednu starší desku španělských BALMOG.
Já a black metal, to je diskuze na dlouhou dobu. Spousta jinak slavných jmen mě vůbec nebaví a většinou se jim po sepsání recenze vyhýbám. S BALMOG je to jiné. Dle mého skromného názoru totiž mají trošku jiný, odlišný přístup k muzice, jsou záhadnější, tajemnější. A hlavně dokáží vytvořit potřebnou pochmurnou atmosféru. Navíc k tomu nepotřebují typické black metalové propriety, jako různé malůvky na obličeji. "Pillars Of Salt" je jednou 18,5 minut dlouhou skladbou. Od posluchače se vyžaduje absolutní pozornost a trpělivost. Vyplatí se, song rozhodně nenudí a nenašel jsem ani jedno slabé místo.
Hrozně se mi líbí zvuk (Jaime Gomez Arellano - mastering, Javi Felez - recording, mixing), který je čistý i špinavý zároveň, průrazný a chladný, přesně jak to mám rád. Obal od Beatrize Castilla také zaujme. Ono to vypadá jako samozřejmost, ale tak tomu rozhodně není. Je vidět i slyšet, že si pánové dali opravdu záležet. To ale umí spousta kapel a často to bývá otázkou peněz. Hlavní jsou ale nakonec stejně nápady a těch mají BALMOG na rozdávání. Dokáží být zemití a suroví, ale také vznešení, nadýchaní. Nálad na EP naleznete opravdu velké množství, hlavou vám proletí tisíce obrazů, temné fantazii se meze nekladou. Kapela, která kdysi byla ovlivněna hlavně švédským black metalem ve stylu ONDSKAPT, VALKYRJA či WATAIN se vydala trnitou cestou objevování černých zákoutí, dotýkají se v některých momentech rocku ze 70 let i psychedelie, post punku. "Pillars Of Salt" je jako vroucí řeka, ve které je umně smícháno spousta špíny, temnoty a talentu. Navíc se skvělými vokály. Buďte temní a chladní!

A strange thing, this band. Such a volatile, elusive band. It's as if you're looking into the bright sun without glasses and seeing only darkness. Once upon a time, I was walking through an old church and I felt weird. My bones were cold and I wanted to be alone. Instead, the faces of the dead began to attack me like some beasts. I´ve never experienced so much pain, so much frost. THe music was also to blame, not only the atmosphere of the place. I listened to an older record of Spanish BALMOG.
Me and black metal - that is a long time discussion. I don't like a lot of big famous names and I normally try not to write a review about those. But it is different with BALMOG. In my humble opinion, they have a slightly different approach to music. They are more mysterious and darker. And most importantly they can create the necessary gloomy atmosphere. In addition, they do not need the typical black metal properties, such as various paintings on the faces. “Pillars of Salt” is 18.5 minutes long. As a listener you need to be absolutely focused and required. It pays off, the song is definitely not boring and I didn´t find a single weak spot.
I really like the sound (Jaime Gomez Arellano - mastering, Javi Felez - recording, mixing) which is clear and dirty at the same time. But it also hits you, it's freezing and that is how I like it. The cover by Beatriz Castilla is also great. It might seem as not a big deal but it certainly is. You can see and hear that those guys really did a good job. But a lot of band can do that and most of the time it's a question of money. However, the really important things are the ideas and BALMOG have a lot of those. They can be earthy and raw, but also noble and fluffy.There are many moods on the album, thousands of images will fly through your head. There are no limits to dark imagination. The band which was once influenced mainly by Swedish black metal in the style of ONDSKAPT, VALKYRJA or WATAIN, has embarked on a thorny journey of discovering black nooks, in some moments of 70´s rock they also touch psychedelia, post punk. “Pilars of Salt” is like a boiling river in which a lot of dirt, darkness and talent is cleverly mixed. Plus with great vocals. Be dark and cold!
