Few questions – interview with thrash/death metal band from Germany - INTOXICUM.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.?
Hi, we’re Intoxicum. Thank you very much for your support!

Our band was founded in 2006, so we’re in business for a pretty long time. After some line up changes we’re in this constellation for years. The band consists of Pete (vocals, bass), Deathan (guitar), Dschaddsch (guitar) and Kai (drums). Roughly spoken, we play a mix of thrash and death metal, as well as rock’n’roll. But there’s no perfectly fitting classification for our music and we don’t give a fuck about that. We play the music that sounds the most fun to all of us. It is a combination of all our influences that produces a very unique sound. At least we like to believe that :D

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We recorded the album within five days at ZK studios in Herrnhut / Saxony with our good friend Alexander Meier. He also did the mixing and mastering, which took some time, since we’re kind of difficult to satisfy in some cases.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

At the moment, we have 300 physical copies of the album in stock, but it’s also available for digital download and streaming. The sales went pretty good so far for a small band like us. We would love to release it on vinyl, maybe we will do that in the future.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with ?

All lyrics from the new album were written by Pete. The songs are mostly questioning human rationality, religion and science and criticize their hubris. Sometimes they describe remarkable historical persons or happenings, like the philosopher Diogenes or the weird practics of some Visigothic kings, who pulled out the eyes of their enemies before sending them to a monastery. Pete also uses quotes from philosophers or medieval texts, since this is stuff he is interested in.

Basically he is trying to write lyrics that are not too much stereotype, which is pretty difficult in Metal. It is alway a balancing act.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

Social networks are very important these days, but there is a flipside to the coin. On the one hand, bands can promote themselves at no or few cost and thus reach more people with less effort. On the other side, facebook and all the other social media are very crowded with bands and there‘re so many of them, that no one can oversee even a fraction of it. Anyway, you kind of have to care for social media to get recognized by promoters and fans.

We changed our band logo for the new record to have a more individual one. It is done by a friend of ours named Robert. He also did other awesome artworks for bands and you should check him out at ILLUSTRIOUS on facebook!

The whole cover artwork and booklet for the album was done by Zippi, who also did quite a lot of quality stuff for bands. We’re very happy with the way it turned out. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have an artist website or facebook page at the moment, but you can find her at Deviantart, when you search for Zippi44.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We do not have a label at the moment, so we had to do it all on our own. This is one of the reasons, why the release of the album took that long. The other reason is, that we live pretty spreaded over Germany and even Austria by now. We have to be very organised, to achieve something like a record release and everything that goes with it.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

There are too many bands to list here and as you can hear we mix different styles of music in our songs. In addition to that, musical taste changes over the years, so it’s hard to pinpoint, where our influences exactly are. But classic Swedish and melodic death metal, rock’n’roll, stoner rock and some thrash bands were and always will be important to us. Besides that, every band member has his special taste, that he brings into the band.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Not yet but we are all about to do that. We sent the album to some magazines and blogs like yours and the reviews went out pretty good so far.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We have played numerous gigs in our band history and enjoyed all of them. We like very small gigs in clubs, where you can really get in touch with the fans. Festival shows with a bigger stage are great as well. Playing live is very important to us and we hope we can do that more often with the new album.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

First of all we want to play as many shows as we can in- and outside of Germany, as well as promote the album. Besides that, we will create some new stuff for the next record, that is hopefully not taking as long as the last one – we will see. So we did not set big goals at the moment. I think the most important thing is to get some people say to you: „That was amazing“ after a gig and have fun on your own, too.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

The best way is to talk to us when we are on the road ;-) Otherwise you can find us on facebook, bandcamp and write us e-mails to booking@intoxicum.com or contact@intoxicum.com We love the feedback from fans or get in touch with promoters. We appreciate nude pics of pretty girls, too ;-)

Thanx for the interview.
