Rogga Ave! This year along with Paul Speckmann and Brynjar Helgetunem
you have released a second album under the name JOHANSSON and Speckmann. How
did the collaboration occur? When and where did the idea of composing the
tracks together happen?
Paul did vocals for a song
on the first Megascavenger album I did, and it turned out great so we thought
that we should keep woking together on something more, and it turned into
Johansson and Speckmann.
You're from Sweden and Paul lives in the Czech Republic and Brynjar
resides in Norway. How did you do the recording? Did you guys meet in a common
rehearsal room or are you using today's modern technology and sending your
ideas via the internet?
The technology today makes
these sorts of collaborations so easy, so you are right there, we did it all by
sending songs back and forth to each other for recording our parts.

You're the author of music for countless variety of bands and
projects. How do you distinguish which
riff will be used from where? It means that you think, for example: "Yeah, this sounds like "Old
school" so we put it on a new album with Paul? "
That’s a good question
haha… I don't know really. To me many of the riffs sound like different of my
projects, but I can understand that other people might think it all sounds the
same. Often I choose to sit down and write to a certain project, and then the
riffs that come is naturally for that project. Other times I just come up with
a riff, and later I feel that maybe this or that project is the best place to
use it.
How did the collaboration with Paul happen? I want to know because you
guys are separated by a twelve-year age gap. Paul is undoubtedly an icon and a
legend. Who had the final word during the making of the tracks? Did you have
any disputes regarding the music being composed? For example, you wanted
something that sounded fresher, more modern and Paul advocated a "more old
school" style? Did such a thing happen with you during the song writing
process?
Actually I didn't think we
had any differences at all regarding the music. Maybe that paul asked for a
part to be shorter or longer or so, but nothing about the riffs or so. I think
when I write music with pauls vocals in plan for it, that I somehow try to make
it a bit more like Master, as I really love Masters music. I don’t know if it
sounds like that or not, its just a feeling I have when I write the stuff. And
it seems paul is liking it too haha, as he hasn't complained on anything yet.

Is JOHANSSON and SPECKMANN only a project or is it also a
"live" band? Can we expect some live performances in the future? I
wonder how these songs would sound at a live concert. Or will you or Paul use
some of these songs as an example in the repertoire for PAGANIZER or MASTER?
So far its only a project,
we talked about doing a tour and there was plans for it and an offer, but as
usual when it comes to me it didn’t happen haha. Im lazy and mostly just play
live with Paganizer wich is my main band. But there are plans of corpse, that
sometime along the road maybe paganizer can rehearse these songs and take them
on the road and Paul will do the vocals and not the bass. So it might happen in
a few years actually, but not right now. Prorbably its something we will try to
get done in a couple of years when we have a third album out.
What about you and concerts and live performances? Do you prefer to play
at festivals or do you like to play in rather smaller clubs? I think that only
with PAGANIZER you played in our country (Czech Republic). Will you bring down
to show us my favorite bands REVOLTING or THE GROTESQUERY some day? I know that
your bands are in many cases international and would be problematic to put up
together quickly but I think that a lot of fans would like to see you.
I like both actually, but
spring and summer festivals is ofcorpse something special and really cool to
do. There have beejn plans for Revolting too for the future, but Grotesquery I
think will remain a studio project only, just like Demiurg was. Its too much
work really to get it all rolling, and no one would pay for it all to happen
regarding travels and flights and such. Revolting however is a band that I
would love to play live with one day.

When I listen to your riffs, I like the fact that it's not just
"ordinary whacking" but that you do create a cold and frosty
melodies. Just like every musician you've got some musical patterns and
influences. Who have you admired and still continue to admire as a musician?
According to who have you learned to play the guitar?

I like both groove and melody to be part of the music and not just the
aggressive stuff. As for musicians I love, there are many of corpse like Dan
Swanö and Rick Rozz style of riffing is something Ive learned from.
You have revolved in your entire music career in the underground. You
have recorded lot of albums in the past and I was wondering if you still can
make a living out of music these days? Like for example….CDs are not sold, fans
are getting older and have other priorities. Do you notice any changes in
recent times, maybe thanks to Internet downloads? Is the underground scene
changing? For us in the Czech Republic, we have only a few enthusiasts left.
The rest have grown old and so now underground keeps only a few individuals.
No I cant make a living
from this, maybe if I was out playing live all year it would work but not on
just doing albums. Like ten fifteen years ago it was better, but internet has
made so much easier but also made it harder to make any money. It is what it is
though, and I just love doing music even if it isn’t something that you can
make a living from.
Everyone considers Sweden as a country where death metal thrives. How is
it with regards to the attendance of concerts in your country? Here sometimes
only a few people turn up for concerts of even the well known bands. In other
various events, it is an awful lot. How does it happen in Sweden? Do you attend
the concerts on a regular basis? Are you supporting the bands? Are you buying
their CDs and merchandise?
It’s the same here,
sometimes there´s almost no people at all, even for larger bands. And sometimes
there can be loads of people. Its strange, maybe it depends on if its in time
for the paycheck or not haha. Sweden is very built on weekends, so gigs in the
middle of the week I think is far less visited, that’s what I think at least. I
live on the countryside and don’t visit shows really if Im not playing myself,
but when we do we listen to other bands if we have time and trade stuff
sometimes too.
I guess we both agree on old bands that we all like. But what about the
new and young bands? Do you prefer watching them live? Did you like some band
in recent times, so much that you said: "Ohh this band is really
something! " ?.
I thinks it´s often like
you grow up with some stuff and after maybe 20 or 25 years of age you steadily
stop listening to so much music, new music. Maybe not for fans, but if you play
music yourself maybe its like you spend more time on your own stuff really, and
don’t have the time or energy to discover so much else. But I love music and
now and then I hear new stuff that I love too ofcorpse. I try to check out new
interesting releases every now and then, and sometimes you can stumble on
really good new stuff. I cant really remember anything right now though haha…
Sorry! Oh yes, Mordbrand are great! Not new guys but the band itself is rather
new-ish I think, awesome album out, Imago, wich everyone should check if they
love dirty death metal done with feeling.

Do you know of or do you listen to some band from the Czech Republic?
One of my fave bands are
Krabathor, and I like Hypnos too. Besides that Im terrible at knowing often
what country bands are from, so Im not sure really if there´s more Czech bands
that I listen to these days.
With Paul you have recorded a second album. To be honest, I cannot
decide which is better for me (laughs). But maybe I would have preferred a
novelty. It is more "moldy" and I remember the melodic stances more.
Do you have any plans for the future? Do you continuously compose new material?
For me the second album is
much better, but that’s how it is I guess when you write something new haha. I
love both album myself too. Well the plan for the future is that we should
definitely do a third album in a year or so, atleast if you ask me. Or sooner,
a mini CD or something like a EP would be cool too if it is doable. And I don’t
have any riffs for it now, but if I sit down Im sure there will be a few songs
dones within just a few hours if you get me a few beers haha.

Ave Rogga! Letos jste spolu s Paulem
Speckmannem a Brynjarem Helgetunem vydali druhé album pod názvem JOHANSSON and
SPECKMANN. Jak vlastně ke spolupráci došlo, kdy a kde vznikl ten nápad, složit
spolu nějaké skladby?
Paul
nazpíval vokál ke skladbě z prvního alba Megascavenger, které jsem napsal a
dopadlo to skvěle, tak jsme si mysleli, že bychom měli spolupracovat na něčem
dalším a vzniklo z toho "Johansson and Speckmann".
Ty jsi ze Švédska, Paul bydlí v České
republice a Brynjar v Norsku. Jak probíhalo nahrávání? Sešli jste se ve
společné zkušebně nebo využíváte dnešní moderní techniku a posíláte si nápady
přes internet?
Dnešní
technologie usnadňuje tenhle druh spolupráce, takže máš pravdu, všechno vzniklo
vzájemným přeposíláním skladeb sem a tam a každý si nahrál své party.

Jsi autorem hudby pro nespočetnou řadu kapel,
projektů. Jak vůbec rozlišuješ, pro koho který riff použiješ? Znamená to, že si
třeba řekneš: „Jo, tak tohle zní „old schoolově“, to dáme na novu desku
s Paulem?“
To je
dobrá otázka, haha... fakt nevím. Mnohé z rifů mi zní odlišně, tak, jako jsou
odlišné moje projekty, ale chápu, že někdo si může myslet, že všechno zní
stejně. Často si sednu a rozhodnu se psát určitý projekt a pak rify, které mě
napadají, jsou přirozeně pro tento projekt. Jindy jsem přišel s nějakým rifem a
později jsem měl pocit, že by možná ten či onen projekt byl lepší místo, kde
jej použít.
Jak probíhala spolupráce s Paulem? Ptám
se, protože vás od sebe přeci jenom dělí dvanáctiletý věkový rozdíl. Paul je
bezesporu ikonou, legendou. Kdo měl nad skladbami konečné slovo? Měli jste
třeba spolu nějaké spory kvůli hudbě? Ty jsi třeba chtěl, aby něco znělo
svěžeji, moderněji a Paul prosazoval „větší old school“? Stávalo se vám to?
Nemyslím
si, že by mezi námi byli nějaké spory, co se týče hudby. Možná, že Paul občas
chtěl, aby některá část byla kratší nebo delší, ale nic o rifech, nebo tak…
Když píšu skladby s Paulovými vokály, myslím, že se snažím, aby to bylo
trochu víc jako Master, opravdu mám rád jejich hudbu. Nevím, jestli to tak zní
nebo ne, je to jen pocit který mám, když píšu tyhle věci. A zdá se, že Paulovi
se to taky líbí, protože si zatím na nic nestěžoval.

Jsou JOHANSSON and SPECKMANN jen projektem
nebo i „živou“ kapelou? Dočkáme se někdy vystoupení? Docela by mě zajímalo, jak
by skladby vyzněly na koncertě. Nebo jinak. Zařadíš ty nebo Paul některé
skladby třeba do repertoáru kupříkladu PAGANIZER nebo MASTER?
Zatím
je to jen projekt, bavili jsme se o tour a byly i plány a nabídka, ale jako
obvykle, když to dojde ke mně, nic se nestane, hahaha. Jsem líný a většinou
hraju živě jen s Paganizer, což je moje hlavní kapela. Ale jsou tady
samozřejmě plány, že někdy vyrazíme společně na tour, možná Paganizer nazkouší
tyhle skladby a Paul se ujme zpěvu a ne basy. K tomu může dojít za pár
let, ale určitě ne teď. Je to něco, čeho se budeme snažit dosáhnout, až budeme
mít venku třetí desku.
Jak je to vůbec s tebou a živými
vystoupeními. Hraješ rád raději na festivalech nebo jsou ti bližší menší kluby?
U nás v Čechách jste vystupovali myslím jen s PAGANIZER. Přivezeš nám
ukázat i třeba mé oblíbené REVOLTING nebo THE GROTESQUERY? Vím, že mnohdy jsou
tvé kapely mezinárodní a byl by problém vás dát všechny dohromady, ale myslím,
že spousta fanoušků by vás ráda viděla.
Samozřejmě
mám rád obojí, ale jarní a letní festivaly jsou něco zvláštního a je super na
nich hrát. Byly tady nějaké plány pro Revolting, ale myslím, že Grotesquery
zůstane pouze studiovým projektem tak, jako byl Demiurg. Je příliš pracné dát
všechno dohromady a nikdo to nezaplatí…cestu, letenky a vše kolem. Každopádně
Revolting je kapela, se kterou bych si jednoho dne rád živě zahrál.

Když poslouchám tvoje riffy, líbí se mi, že
to není jen „obyčejný nářez“, ale že dokážeš vytvořit studené, chladné melodie.
Stejně jako každý muzikant asi máš nějaké vzory. Koho jsi obdivoval a obdivuješ
jako muzikanta? Podle koho ses učil hrát na kytaru?
Díky,
je fajn to slyšet. Libí se mi, když nejen agrese, ale i groove a melodie jsou
součástí hudby. Pokud jde o hudebníky, které mám rád, je jich samozřejmě mnoho,
jako třeba Dan Swanö a Rick Ross, od těch jsem se naučil techniku hry.
Pohybuješ se celou svoji hudební kariéru
v undergroundu. Nahrál jsi spoustu alb a mě by zajímalo, jestli se dá
ještě dneska touto hudbou vůbec uživit? CD se moc neprodávají, fanoušci stárnou
a mají jiné priority. Pozoruješ nějakou změnu, třeba díky internetovému
stahování? Mění se undergroundová scéna? U nás v Čechách už zbylo jen pár
nadšenců, zbytek zestárl a tak to drží jen několik jedinců.
Neuživím
se tím, možná kdybych jezdil ven a hrál živě celý rok, tak by to šlo, ale jen
vydáváním alb to nejde. Před deseti až patnácti lety to bylo lepší, internet
sice vše usnadnil, ale zároveň dělá těžším vydělat si nějaké peníze. Je to, jak
to je a já prostě jen rád dělám muziku a to i přesto, že to není něco, čím bych
se mohl uživit.
Švédsko všichni vnímají jako zemi, kde se
death metalu daří. Jak je to u vás s návštěvností koncertů? U nás přijde
někdy i na slavnou kapelu pár lidí. Různých akcí je hrozně moc. Jak je tomu u
vás? Chodíš ty na koncerty? Podporuješ kapely? Kupuješ CD, merchandise?
Tady
je to stejné, někdy nepřijde nikdo a to ani na velké kapely a někdy je narváno.
Je to zvláštní, možná to záleží na tom, jestli je zrovna výplata, nebo ne,
hahaha. Švédsko si zakládá na víkendech, takže na koncertech v půlce týdne
je daleko menší návštěvnost, alespoň si to teda myslím. Bydlím na venkově a
nechodím na koncerty, pokud na nich sám nehraju, ale pokud už hrajeme a máme
čas, poslechneme si i ostatní kapely a občas i něco nakoupíme.
Oba bychom se asi shodli na starých kapelách,
které máme všichni rádi. Co ale nové, mladé? Sleduješ je? Zaujala tě některá
natolik, že sis řekl: „Na téhle smečce něco je!“.
Myslím,
že s některými věcmi jakoby rosteš a možná že po nějakých 20 - 25ti letech
přestaneš poslouchat tolik muziky, nové muziky. Nejspíš ne jako fanoušek, ale
pokud sám děláš hudbu, trávíš víc času nad svými vlastními věcmi a nemáš tolik
času nebo energie objevovat nové věci. Hudbu
mám rád a slyšel jsem i nějaké nové nahrávky, které se mi samozřejmě líbí.
Snažím se sledovat co vyšlo nového, občas můžeš narazit na opravdu dobré
věci. Ale zrovna teď si nemůžu na nic
vzpomenout, haha..sorry! Ach ano....Mordbrand jsou skvělí! Žádní nováčci, ale
myslím, že kapela sama o sobě je poměrně nová. Mají venku výborné album Imago a
každý, kdo má rád špinavý death metal, by si je měl poslechnout.

Znáš, posloucháš nějakou kapelu z České
republiky?
Jedna
z mých oblíbených kapel je Krabathor a taky mám rád Hypnos. Na druhou stranu často nevím, ze které země kapely pochází,
takže si opravdu nejsem jistý, jestli je víc českých kapel, které jsem v
poslední době slyšel.
S Paulem jste nahráli druhé album. Abych
pravdu řekl, nějak se nedokážu rozhodnout, které je pro mě lepší (smích). Možná
bych ale dal přednost novince. Je víc „plesnivá“ a melodie si víc pamatuji.
Máte už nějaké plány do budoucna? Skládáš průběžně nový materiál?
Pro mě
je druhé album mnohem lepší, ale myslím, že tak to bývá, když napíšeš něco
nového, hahaha. Každopádně mám rád obě alba. Když už se ptáš, tak plán do
budoucna je takový, že bychom chtěli během roku určitě nahrát třetí album, nebo
možná ještě předtím vydáme nějaké mini cd, nebo něco jako EP by bylo taky v
pohodě. Momentálně ještě nemám žádné riffy, ale pokud si k tomu sednu a dám si
pár piv, jsem si jistý, že během několika hodin budu mít pár skladem, hahaha.
