Bylo už pozdě večer. Nikam se mi nechtělo. Jenže jsem musel. Poslední měsíce umírá spousta lidí. Kopu další hrob a přemýšlím, proč tomu tak je. Někteří mluví o nějaké starodávné chorobě, která se znovu objevila. Otevřu dveře do márnice a beru do rukou lopatu. Venku je už tma a potom zaslechnu divný zvuk. Otočím se a jedna mrtvola se na mě usmívá. Zvedne se a zapne play na přehrávači, který leží na jedné staré rakvi. Vypadá to, že dnes už nic neudělám. Nakloní se ke mě a prokousne mi hrdlo. 

Vítejte na mexickém hřbitově. Dnes nám tu hraje debutová deska maniaků ABJECT MENTOR. Kapela, která se dala na stranu temnoty. Album se mi ihned dostalo do žil. Není divu, je plné morbidních melodií, divokých rytmů a mocného vokálu. Jedná se o smrtící koktejl shnilých nápadů, které kapela posbírala na dávno opuštěných pohřebištích. 


Pánové neobjevují nic nového, ani se nesnaží do hudby přinášet nějaké nové trendy. Naopak, všechno je staré, náležitě plesnivé, hnusné a ohavné. Mám to takhle rád a proto jsem si dával jejich novou desku "Abominaciones" rád a často do hlavy. Nejlépe večer, když už byly stíny dlouhé a nemrtví lezli z hrobů ven. Inspirací zde bylo to nejlepší z devadesátých let minulého století. A to jak evropská (PESTILENCE, MORGOTH, BOLT THROWER), tak americká škola (OBITUARY, MASSACRE). O to ale nejde, dnes je každý někomu podobný. Pro mě je hlavní, že cítím ze skladeb poctivost, takovou tu prašivinu, kterou máme my, staří death metalové psi tolik rádi. Dal jsem si před lety závazek, že budu podporovat právě podobné smečky. Dovedu si představit, že zavítám na koncert kapely, dám si pár piv a pak skočím do mosh-pitu. Vše je totiž zahrané velmi ověřitelně, opravdově, od srdce. Kývám se spokojeně do rytmu a i když jsem na malém hřbitově nad městem, představuji si, že jsme se vydali na dlouhou cestu bez konce. Tohle je ryzí hudba ze starých mexických pohřebišť. Z míst, kde byly pořádány krvavé rituály. Troufám si tvrdit, že se první dlouhohrající album kapely povedlo. Nemám žádných námitek proti zvuku, ani proti obalu (Julian Felipe Mora Ibañez). Vše je v nejlepším pořádku. Dejte mi do rukou lopatu, musím vykopat další hrob! Venku je už tma a potom zaslechnu divný zvuk. Otočím se a jedna mrtvola se na mě usmívá. Zvedne se a zapne play na přehrávači, který leží na jedné staré rakvi. Vypadá to, že dnes už nic neudělám. Nakloní se ke mě a prokousne mi hrdlo. Prokletá kobka byla otevřena! Old school death metal z onoho světa!

It was late in the evening. I didn't want to go anywhere. But I had to. A lot of people have been dying these last few months. I'm digging another grave and wondering why that is. Some talk about some ancient disease that's resurfaced. I open the door to the morgue and pick up a shovel. It's already dark outside and then I hear a strange sound. I turn around and a corpse is smiling at me. He gets up and turns on the play on the player that's on top of an old coffin. Looks like I won't be doing anything today. He leans over and bites my throat. 

Welcome to the Mexican cemetery. Tonight we have the debut album from maniacs ABJECT MENTOR. A band that took the dark side. The album got into my veins immediately. No wonder, it's full of morbid melodies, wild rhythms and powerful vocals. It's a lethal cocktail of rotten ideas that the band picked up in long-abandoned burial grounds.


The gentlemen are not discovering anything new, nor are they trying to bring any new trends to music. On the contrary, everything is old, properly moldy, ugly and disgusting. I like it that way and that's why I've been putting their new album "Abominaciones" in my head happily and often. Preferably in the evening, when the shadows were long and the undead were crawling out of their graves. The inspiration here was the best of the 90s. And it was both European (PESTILENCE, MORGOTH, BOLT THROWER) and American school (OBITUARY, MASSACRE). But that's not the point, nowadays everyone is like someone. For me the main thing is that I can feel the honesty from the songs, the kind of dirt that we old death metal dogs like so much. Years ago I made a commitment to support such bands. I can imagine going to a band's show, having a few beers and then jumping into a mosh pit. It's all played very authentically, genuinely, from the heart. I sway contentedly to the rhythm, and even though I'm in a small cemetery above the town, I imagine we've embarked on a long journey with no end in sight. This is pure music from the old Mexican burial grounds. From places where blood rituals were held. I dare say the band's first full-length album was a success. I have no objections to the sound or the cover art (Julian Felipe Mora Ibañez). Everything is in the best order. Put a shovel in my hands, I have another grave to dig! It's already dark outside and then I hear a strange sound. I turn around and a dead man is smiling at me. He gets up and puts on a play on a player that's on top of an old coffin. A few questions - interview with death metal band from Mexico - ABJECT MENTOR.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Hello, we are ABJECT MENTOR, we are a band that was founded at the end of 2020 in Aguascalientes, Mexico; with the purpose of making death metal in the style of the 90s with the current sound.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

In this title we work together trying to maintain a solid style between the songs without being changes of another style, but always maintaining death metal. Our close friend Fer Castro was the one who was in charge of giving the peculiar sound to the album using a very deep distortion, very intense voices and an aggressive drums which makes it unique to our album "abominaciones”.


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

It is a single edition and limited to 1000 copies by Awakening Records in which it will be handled in physical Cd and digital format.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

The author of lyrics is Tony Diaz (guitar and voice) and the purpose of the lyrics is only to show the raw side of reality, the day to day in an environment where you live fast, where death is the order of the day, we do not talk about death as something we profess but as the reality of today's world.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was created by Tony Díaz, our networks in terms of handling and graphics are in charge of that on some occasions we ourselves as a band and at other times we support ourselves with Blacksmith media. Social networks are very useful since they serve us in terms of promoting our music, events and merchandise, so we try to be active in the main networks.


Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We are working with Awakening Records and we are very happy to be working with them, they have given us the necessary attention that a label should have, in addition to the fact that for us it was a great thing to work with an international label.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Our musical tastes are very varied since we like it from the progressive rock of the 70s to the most brutal of recent years, we take inspiration from bands such as Gorefest, Morbid Angel, Sadus, Possessed, Necrot, Blood Incantation, and more.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

To be honest, we did not want to work with other labels nor did we previously seek to work with any, because the plan was to release the album on our own.


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We have had around 50 shows including home shows, in small bars, in public forums, in terms of sound we prefer shows at festivals/forums but in terms of energy we prefer shows in small places.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We have in mind to compose music all next year, release some singles that we already have ready and we would like to achieve a few more dates in Mexico and maybe in a few years go down to the South of Latin America or visit the other side of the world.

Slyším šepot samotného ďábla. Nechápu to. Během dne je to chlápek ze sousedství, milý a usměvavý. Jenže v noci ukáže i svoji odvrácenou tvář. Toulá se ulicemi, přepadává své oběti. Jeho kroky nakonec vždy směřují do staré kobky s nápisem HINSIDES. Hraje se v ní jenom starý, plesnivý a poctivý black metal. Vždy přijdou úplně všichni. Nemrtví, přízraky, démoni, Smrt i on, ďábel.

Když černý kov, tak prosím pěkně v této podobě. Takto, ve stylu ranných devadesátých let a v severských rytmech, jej mám stejně nejraději. HINSIDES je kapela jednoho člena. Říká si M. A. a je podepsán pod veškerou hudbou i vokály. A hraje také v neméně skvělých ULTRA SILVAM. 


Ze skladeb je cítit takový ten morbidní mrtvolný zápach. Tahle deska musela být opravdu nahrávána několik metrů v podzemí, ve starých prašivých katakombách. Jedná se o velmi ortodoxní, tradiční materiál, který potěší ucho všech pravověrných. Neexistuje nic jiného, než chlad a temnota. Alespoň během poslechu "Hinsides hörs djävulsklockans urklang" to tak je. HINSIDES ve mě probudili spoustu starodávných, děsivých vzpomínek na kultovní smečky, které kdysi v devadesátých letech tento žánr formovaly. Vše je ohlodáno na kost, nikde nic nechybí, ani nepřebývá. Melodie jsou velmi mrazivé, zadřou se vám pod kůži. Vstávám brzy ráno, v ulicích je ještě prázdno. Občas se objeví podivné stíny. Podávají mi ruku a tohle album. Je to hniloba, špína a smrt, hnusná krutá a ošklivá smrt. Totální nihilismus, šedivé mraky, ze kterých prší krev. HINSIDES neobjevují nic nového, drží se svého řemesla a dělají to velmi dobře. Desku si opravdu užívám a rád a často se k ní vracím. Už dávno nepotřebuji světlo, už dávno zvítězila tma. Zvuk, obal, nápady i melodie, vše je podřízeno jedinému. Temnotě. Připadám si, jako při exhumaci starého, dávno opuštěného hrobu, ve kterém byl pochován prokletý mnich. Cítím ze songů takovou tu starodávnou patinu, plíseň. A tak mi nezbývá nic jiného, než hodnotit velmi vysoko a nahrávku vám doporučit. Zhasněte všechna světla a vydejte se na hřbitov za městem. V těchto momentech vynikne síla této desky nejvíce. Nahrubo nasekaná tma a chlad! Pradávná black metalová seance!

I hear the whisper of the devil himself. I don't understand. During the day, it's the neighborhood guy, nice and smiling. But at night, he shows his ugly side. He roams the streets, ambushes his victims. His steps always end up in an old dungeon with a HINSIDES sign on it. It's just old, moldy, honest black metal. Everybody always comes. The undead, ghosts, demons, Death and him, the devil.

If it's black metal, then please, in this form. I like it this way, early 90s style and in Nordic rhytmes anyway. HINSIDES is a one-man band. He calls himself M.A. and is signed to all the music and vocals. And he's also in the equally great ULTRA SILVAM.

The songs have this morbid, dead smell. This record must have been really recorded several meters underground, in old dingy catacombs. This is very orthodox, traditional material that will please the ear of all the true believers. There is nothing but coldness and darkness. At least while listening to "Hinsides hörs djävulsklockans urklang" it is. HINSIDES awakened in me a lot of ancient, eerie memories of the cult packs that once shaped the genre back in the nineties. Everything is gnawed to the bone, nothing is missing or missing anywhere. The melodies are very chilling, they get under your skin. I wake up early in the morning, the streets are still empty. Sometimes strange shadows appear. They give me their hand and this album. It's rot, dirt and death, a nasty, cruel, ugly death. Total nihilism, grey clouds raining blood. HINSIDES don't discover anything new, they stick to their craft and do it very well. I really enjoy the album and I like it and come back to it often. I don't need the light anymore, the darkness won long ago. The sound, the cover, the ideas and the melodies, everything is subordinate to one thing. Darkness. I feel like I'm exhuming an old, long-abandoned grave where a cursed monk was buried. I can smell that ancient patina, the mould. And so I have no choice but to rate it very highly and recommend the record to you. Turn off all the lights and head to the cemetery outside the city. It is in these moments that the power of this record shines through the most. Coarsely chopped darkness and coldness! An ancient black metal séance!

Když jsem před mnoha a mnoha lety pátral po svých předcích, zavedl mě rodokmen do polského Kladska. Dokonce jsem našel dům, ve kterém můj děda vyrůstal. Když jsem potom nedávno objevil detektivní sérii Glatz, která se v těchto místech odehrává, vše se mi tak nějak spojilo v jedno. Měl jsem i během druhého dílu, který se odehrává v roce 1923, neustále neodbytný pocit, že jsou mí předci součástí příběhu. Najednou jsem si připadal trošku neúplný. Měl jsem možná pátrat ještě dál. Každý badatel v historii čeká, že byl součástí šlechtického rodu, ale to je velmi naivní představa. Máme ve zvyku si naše předky idealizovat a na to špatné zapomínat. I oni ale vraždili, byli nevěrní, zlí. A naopak. Je to vlastně nikdy nekončíci souboj mezi světlem a tmou. Vždy záleží jen na nás, na jakou stranu se postavíme. 

Vždycky jsem překvapen, kolik toho máme s Poláky společného. V tomto případě se příběhem prolíná dějová linka s nám notoricky známou postavou, duchem hor, Rübezahlem. Ano, je to náš Krakonoš, v jejich podání o dost děsivější. Hlavní příběh je neméně temný. Zmrzačený turista. Vraždu vyšetřuje vrchní strážmistr Franz Koschell. a vy si tak můžete vychutnat výlet do doby, kdy se Evropa pomalu vzpamatovávala po první světové válce. Ne, nejsou to krásné obrázky z pohlednic, které najdete na půdě. Naopak, na povrch zase jednou vyvřela temnota a lidská nenávist. Autor, když knížku psal, tak se opravdu skvěle připravil, co se týká historických faktů. Musím mu vyseknout poklonu. Mám moc rád detektivky, které se odehrávají v historii. Tehdy měli samozřejmě omezené možnosti, co se týká technologií. Vyšetřovalo se  jinak, což je pochopitelné. Vždycky, když podobné knihy čtu, tak si říkám, kolik případů zůstalo neobjasněno.  

Máme tu tedy napínavý děj, výlet do minulosti, prostředí, které je i mými kořeny. Zamícháno, skvěle napsáno a výsledkem je velmi zajímavé krimi, které se mi četlo samo. Mám to takhle rád. Když jsem chycen u první kapitoly, abych se potom "probudil" do současného světa až po spoustě stránek. Když mě kniha nebaví, tak ji nečtu. Mám to stejné jako s muzikou. Už čtu a poslouchám jenom to, co mě baví. Navíc o tom píšu, což je samo o sobě řehole. Série Glatz je mým malým soukromým objevem. Myslím si ale, že by se vám mohla líbit, i když nejste prostředím osobně spjati jako já. On má autor totiž takový ten dar vypravěče, což by měl dobrý spisovatel mít. Já vím, poslední dobou se na dobré řemeslo zapomíná ve všech oborech, ale jsem stalá škola. Jiný už nebudu a ani nechci být. Cítím chlad a syrovost tehdejší doby, když obracím stránky a srkám k tomu kávu. Byli jsme zase na dlouhé procházce v lesích. Zrovna jsem vzpomínal na svoji babičku, která nám o Krakonošovi vyprávěla. Jako dítě jsem se ho dost bál. 

Nahlédneme do minulosti, do lidských myšlenek, které měly být raději skryty. Vždycky, když se toulám po vlastech českých, fascinuje mě, kolik je všude různých pomníčků, křížů. Dost často jsou vzpomínkou na nějaké neštěstí nebo právě vraždu. Tenkrát sice lidé měli respekt alespoň před Bohem, ale jak to vypadá, tak rozhodně ne všichni. Ukazuje se, že jsme vlastně trošku chytřejší zvířata a to jenom někteří. Ne, já nechci a nevidím svět jenom černě. Mě baví rozplétat napínavé případy. Do hry vstupuje Wilhelm Klein, vojenský detektiv a my postupně zjišťujeme, že případy souvisí s jeho minulostí. Celá kniha plyne tak nějak samozřejmě, připadám si, že je opravdu rok 1923. Zrovna jedu v kočáře a na hlavě mám cylindr. 

Mám rád historické detektivky. Jsou pro mě vždy takovým literárním osvěžením. A navíc, když jsou dobře napsány, tak si doplním a rozšířím také obzory. Je to taková ta knížka do sychravých dní, které právě kolem nás probíhají. Těším se, až zase pojedu na hory. Asi si vezmu knihu s sebou a přečtu si ji znovu. Myslím si, že na chalupě v Jizerkách, pár kilometrů od Kladska, vynikne ještě lépe. Moji předci byli jen obyčejní řemeslníci, sedláci a dělníci. Snad žili poctivě. KNIŽNÍ TIPY - Glatz - Tomasz Duszynski (2022):

Sněžník, zima 1923. Místní průvodce nachází na vrcholu věže císaře Viléma tělo turisty, zmrzačené drastickým a promyšleným způsobem. Téhož dne je zavražděn uznávaný vědec. Vrah se v zanechané zprávě představuje jako hrdina místních pověstí, Duch hor, Rübezahl. Vyšetřováním případu je pověřen šéf kladského kriminálního oddělení, vrchní strážmistr Franz Koschella. Brzy vyjde najevo, že Rübezahl si své oběti nevybírá náhodně, a stopy vedou až do nemocnice v Beelitzu nedaleko Berlína. Kladský policista se střetává se starým známým, vojenským detektivem kapitánem Wilhelmem Kleinem. Koschella je přesvědčený, že klíč k polapení pachatele spočívá v Kleinově minulosti. Konfrontace s kapitánem je nevyhnutelná a pravda, kterou odhalí, bude mít neobyčejně vážné důsledky. Co se skrývá pod tajícím sněhem? A kdo tak krutým způsobem rozplétá nitky minulosti? Třetí díl detektivní série Glatz, zasazené do česko-polského pohraničí dvacátých let.

Procházím se ve stínu starých hrobů. V kostech cítím chlad a těším se na další setkání s nemrtvými. Je šero a mlhavé přízraky mě zvou na další seanci. Už dlouhý čas jsem neviděl světlo. Každé ráno uléhám do své rakve a přemýšlím, jakou hudbu budu poslouchat příště. Dnes jsem si naprosto jistý, že budeme tančit v rytmu nového alba britských CRYPTWORM. Už je čas, musíme otevřít hrobku. Leží v ní těla prokletých a drží v ruce desku "Oozing Radioactive Vomition".

Abyste tenhle death metal pochopili, je nutné nejdřív odstranit pavučiny, špínu a prach. Teprve potom, v absolutní tmě, vynikne nová nahrávka nejvíce. Doporučuji podávat podchlazené a nejlépe o půlnoci. Téhle smečce se u nás věnujeme dlouhodobě (odkazy na předešlé recenze a rozhovor naleznete dole pod článkem). Letos nám pánové opět přinášejí prvotřídní death metal z onoho světa.


Je to temnota, hniloba a sněť. Smrtící kov v podobě, v jaké se hrával v devadesátých letech minulého století. S morbidně podmanivou atmosférou, ve stylu třeba takových UNDERGANG, TOMB MOLD, ARCHAIC TOMB, MORTICIAN, UNDEATH, DISMA, se zde tančí na starých hrobech. A to prosím pěkně, velmi elegantně a s jasným účelem - zabít vás hudbou. Zvuk, obal, produkce, vše je podřízeno jedinému. Pohřbít vás zaživa. Já, starý hrobník se vždy na podobné nahrávky velmi těším. Dodávají mi jistotu, že na konci je krutá a ošklivá smrt. Jediná spravedlnost pro všechny v tomhle šíleném světě. Pánové hrají s nadšením, uvěřitelně a přesvědčivě. Líbí se mi, že má deska takovou tu těžko popsatelnou, mokvající atmosféru, kterou máme my, věrní fanoušci záhrobních rituálů tolik rádi. CRYPTWORM opět dokazují, že existuje opravdové zlo. Prosévám mezi prsty prach svých předků, kývám se do rytmu, vyhledávám stín. Hraje se zde přesně pro mě i pro všechny prokleté. Netuším, co bude následovat po smrti, nevím, jak to bude vypadat za řekou Styx. Jsem si ale naprosto jistý, že se tam bude hrát z alba "Oozing Radioactive Vomition". Je totiž opravdovou, reálnou ozvěnou z onoho světa. Novinka se musela nahrávat hluboko v podzemí, mezi studenými kobkami, ve starých plesnivých hrobech. Nezbývá mi nic jiného, než vám desku doporučit. Procházím se ve stínu starých hrobů. V kostech cítím chlad a těším se na další setkání s nemrtvými. Je šero a mlhavé přízraky mě zvou na další seanci. Už dlouhý čas jsem neviděl světlo. Hniloba, rozklad, smrt! Temnotou, krví a špínou nasáklý death metalový obřad!

I walk in the shadows of old graves. I feel the chill in my bones and look forward to my next encounter with the undead. It's dusk and the misty ghosts invite me to another seance. I haven't seen the light in a long time. Every morning I lie down in my coffin and wonder what music I will listen to next. Today, I'm pretty sure we'll be dancing to the beat of the new album by British CRYPTWORM. It's time to open the tomb. The bodies of the damned are lying there, holding the album "Oozing Radioactive Vomition".

To understand this death metal, you must first remove the cobwebs, dirt and dust. Only then, in absolute darkness, does the new record stand out the most. I recommend serving it undercooled and preferably at midnight. We've been covering this pack for a long time (links to previous reviews and interview can be found at the bottom of this article). This year the gentlemen bring us again some top-notch death metal from beyond.


It's darkness, rot and snow. Death metal as it was played in the 1990s. With a morbidly captivating atmosphere, in the style of the likes of UNDERGANG, TOMB MOLD, ARCHAIC TOMB, MORTICIAN, UNDEATH, DISMA, it dances on old graves. And please do it nicely, very elegantly and with a clear purpose - to kill you with music. The sound, the cover, the production, everything is subordinated to one thing. To bury you alive. I, an old grave digger, always look forward to records like this. They give me confidence that there's a cruel and ugly death at the end. The only justice for all in this crazy world. The gentlemen play with enthusiasm, believability and conviction. I like that the record has that hard to describe, swampy atmosphere that we loyal fans of the afterlife rituals love so much. CRYPTWORM prove once again that there is real evil. I sift the dust of my ancestors through my fingers, swaying to the beat, searching for the shadow. Playing here is just right for me and all the damned. I don't know what will follow after death, I don't know what it will look like beyond the River Styx. But I'm pretty sure there's going to be music from the "Oozing Radioactive Vomition" album. Because it's a real, real echo from the other world. The new album must have been recorded deep underground, among cold dungeons, in old moldy graves. I have no choice but to recommend the record to you. I walk in the shadows of old graves. I feel the chill in my bones and look forward to the next encounter with the undead. It's dusk and the misty ghosts invite me to another séance. I haven't seen the light in a long time. Rot, decay, death! A death metal ceremony soaked in darkness, blood and filth!

Sedím v temné místnosti a drásám si obličej do krve. Pálí mě celé moje tělo. Nikdo neví, co se mnou je. Podezření na různé choroby bylo vyvráceno. Prošel jsem mnoha vyšetřeními a nakonec se nic nezjistilo. Přesto chřadnu a ztrácím se před očima. Nemám rád světlo, nelíbí se mi falešné úsměvy na tvářích. Vyhledávám studený stín a hudbu, která je temná a prokletá jako moje duše. Raději trávím svůj čas v záhrobí, exhumuji staré hroby a stále rád objevuji nové kapely, které ví, o čem je reálná a krutá smrt.

PLAGUEMACE jsou z Dánska a letos přicházejí se svým prvním dlouhohrajícím albem. Na začátek je nutné rovnou zmínit, že se mi novinka moc líbí. Má v sobě totiž vše potřebné pro starodávné rituály. Riffy řežou jako čerstvě nabroušený skalpel, vokál je náležitě morbidní a bicí vám vystřelí mozek z hlavy. Tohle je hudba pro staré prašivé psy i pro všechny, kteří propadli temnotě. 


Pánové si dali velký pozor na zvuk, který je náležitě mocný, divoký i čitelný. Zaujme i "komixový" obal, který je sice pro hraný styl poměrně netypický, ale aspoň si jej zase každý všimne. Co se týká hudby, tak se kapela volně inspirovala u smeček jako jsou GRAVE, ENTOMBED, BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY, nověji třeba BODYFARM. Zkrátka a dobře, velmi slušně zahraný old school death metal s vlastní invencí a nápady. Pro mě je potom nejdůležitější, že mě baví album poslouchat. Nejedná se sice o nic nového v podzemí, ale to myslím v dnešní době nikomu nevadí. Každý je někomu podobný. PLAGUEMACE se navíc snaží mít přeci jen trošku jiný přístup, než jejich mnozí současní kolegové. Hraje se zde postaru, ale vše působí svěže a neotřele. Navíc se deska opravdu dobře poslouchá. Jako vždy vám doporučuji klidný a čerstvě vyvětraný pokoj. Zhasnutá světla a alespoň několik soustředěných poslechů. Po nějaké době vám "Reptilian Warlords" pronikne do krve, zadře se vám pod kůži. Osobně se mi potom nejvíc osvědčily dlouhé toulky nočním městem, které mě vždy zavedly na jeden starý, dávno opuštěný hřbitov. Tak by tomu u dobrého kovu smrti mělo být. Mlha všude kolem mě, podivné stíny, přízraky, démoni, ale hlavně muzika, která je ostrá, temná a obsahuje v sobě velké množství tlaku a energie. Jako starý pes dávám nahrávce vysokou známku kvality! Hniloba, špína a krutá, reálná smrt ze starých death metalových katakomb! Budete spáleni na popel!

I'm sitting in a dark room, scratching my face bloody. My whole body is burning. Nobody knows what's wrong with me. Various suspected diseases have been ruled out. I've been through many examinations and in the end nothing was found. Still, I'm wasting away and losing sight of myself. I don't like the light, I don't like the false smiles on my face. I seek cold shadows and music that is as dark and cursed as my soul. I prefer to spend my time in the grave, exhuming old graves and I still like to discover new bands that know what real and cruel death is all about.

PLAGUEMACE are from Denmark and this year they come with their first full-length album. I have to mention right off the bat that I really like the new stuff. It has everything you need for ancient rituals. The riffs cut like a freshly sharpened scalpel, the vocals are suitably morbid and the drums will blow your brains out. This is music for old mangy dogs and all those who have fallen into darkness.


The gentlemen took great care with the sound, which is appropriately powerful, fierce and clear. The "comics" cover is also interesting, which is rather untypical for the feature style, but at least everyone will notice it again. As far as the music is concerned, the band was inspired by such bands as GRAVE, ENTOMBED, BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY and more recently BODYFARM. In short, very well played old school death metal with its own inventiveness and ideas. For me the most important thing is that I enjoy listening to the album. It's not something new in the underground, but I don't think anyone minds that nowadays. Everybody is like somebody else. Moreover, PLAGUEMACE tries to have a slightly different approach than many of their contemporary colleagues. The playing is old-fashioned, but everything feels fresh and new. Moreover, the album is really good to listen to. As always, I recommend a quiet and freshly aired room. Lights off and at least a few concentrated listens. After a while, "Reptilian Warlords" will get into your blood, get under your skin. Personally, the best way for me afterwards were long wanderings through the city at night, which always took me to an old, long-abandoned cemetery. That's how it should be with good death metal. Fog all around me, strange shadows, ghosts, demons, but most of all music that is edgy, dark and contains a lot of pressure and energy. As an old dog I give the record a high mark for quality! Rot, filth and cruel, real death from the old death metal catacombs! You will be burnt to ashes!

Vždy na něm bylo něco strašidelného. Měl krásnou tvář a vždy se usmíval, ale jakmile promluvil, tak vás začalo mrazit v zádech. Lidé, kteří ho potkali, měli potom často děsivé sny. Navštívil jsem jej jednoho prosincového večera. Venku už mrzlo a jeho domem se šířil podivný zápach. Žil sám, hluboko v lesích. Přivítal mě mile, přesto jsem se měl na pozoru. Vyšli jsme ven a na zahradě jsem si všiml vykopané díry. To je hrob pro tebe, řekl mi a potom jsem přešel na druhou stranu, na onen svět.

Mám to takhle pokaždé, když poslouchám nějakou novou kapelu. Nechávám se unášet na krvavých vlnách a poslouchám pozorně. Hororový příběh z úvodu a debutové album norských death metalistů HORRIFIER se mi ihned spojili v jedno. Nahlédl jsem zase jednou do záhrobí a užíval si pořádnou porci morbidních melodií. 


Pánové mě vzali na dlouhý výlet do devadesátých let minulého století. A udělali to velmi elegantně a zkušeně. Pokud uctíváte k smrti smečky jako REPULSION, AUTOPSY (nověji pak OBLITERATION, SEPULCHER, INCULTER, CONDOR), i zásadní kapely severského smrtícího kovu, bude vám dobře i ve společnosti HORRIFIER. Vše je podřízeno jedinému. Pohřbít vás zaživa. Kapela si dala velký pozor na zvuk. Ten je opravdový, prašivý, nahraný ve starých katakombách. Zaujme i obal, který krásně doplňuje pochmurnou atmosféru celé desky. Je to hniloba, špína a smrt v nekonečných křečích. Už jste někdy navštívili místo, kde byli pohřbeni oběti násilného činu? Pokud ne, tak ani nemusíte, stačí přidat hlasitost a naplno si vychutnat album "Horrid Resurrection". Novinka je protkaná velmi temnými a hororovými náladami. Jako když jdete lesem a do ticha zazní výkřik lovené zvěře. Zastavíte se a zjistíte, že kolem vás je staré pohřebiště. Je už tma a z děr začnou vylézat nemrtví. Líbí se mi, jakým způsobem kapela přistupuje k muzice, oceňuji, že dokázali do skladeb vložit zvláštní neklid. Zanechávají po sobě krvavou stopu. Jasně, podobných skupin dnes běhá po světě velká spousta. Jenže HORRIFIER jsou trošku jiní. Je hodně znát, že pevně věří své morbidní práci. Zhasněte všechna světla a vydejte na cestu bez konce. Je jedno, jestli jste živí nebo dávno po smrti. Všem novou nahrávku doporučuji. Mokvající, syrový a děsivý death metal, u kterého začnete hnít zaživa! Nemrtví povstali!

There was always something creepy about him. He had a beautiful face and always smiled, but as soon as he spoke, you got chills. People who met him often had scary dreams afterwards. I visited him one evening in December. It was freezing outside and a strange smell was wafting through his house. He lived alone, deep in the woods. He greeted me pleasantly, yet I was wary. We went outside and I noticed a hole dug in the garden. That's a grave for you, he told me, and then I crossed over to the other side, to the other world.

I get like this every time I listen to a new band. I get carried away on the bloody waves and listen carefully. The horror story from the intro and the debut album of Norwegian death metallers HORRIFIER immediately merged into one for me. I took another peek into the afterlife and enjoyed a good portion of morbid melodies. 

The gentlemen took me on a long trip to the 1990s. And they did it very elegantly and expertly. If you worship to the death bands like REPULSION, AUTOPSY (and more recently OBLITERATION, SEPULCHER, INCULTER, CONDOR), and the essential bands of Nordic death metal, you'll be fine in the company of HORRIFIER. Everything is subordinated to one thing. Bury you alive. The band has taken great care with the sound. It's real, dusty, recorded in old catacombs. The cover artwork is also impressive, and it beautifully complements the gloomy atmosphere of the whole album. It's rot, filth and death in endless spasms. Have you ever visited the place where the victims of a violent crime were buried? If not, you don't even have to, just turn up the volume and enjoy "Horrid Resurrection" to the fullest. The novelty is interwoven with very dark and horror moods. Like when you are walking through the woods and the cries of hunted animals are heard in the silence. You stop and find an old burial ground around you. It's already dark and the undead start crawling out of the holes. I like the way the band approaches the music, I appreciate that they were able to put a special restlessness into the songs. They leave a trail of blood in their wake. Sure, there are a lot of bands like this running around the world today. But HORRIFIER are a bit different. It's very clear that they believe strongly in their morbid work. Turn off all the lights and embark on a journey without end. It doesn't matter if you're alive or long dead. I recommend the new record to everyone. Wetting, raw and terrifying death metal that will make you rot alive! The undead have risen!

Volám kamarádovi, jestli koupil pivo. Když mi odpoví kladně, tak mám radost. Konečně máme chvilku volno. Jedeme autobusem a vezeme sebou velký sud. Mám na starosti muziku a v mém přehrávači je nové album italských URAL. Dosud jsem kapelu neznal, ale pustil jsem si doma několik ukázek a musím říct, že tohle je přesně druh thrash metalu, který stále hrozně rád poslouchám. Konečně jsme na místě. Stará garáž za městem, kde nikomu nebude vadit, že tu budeme dělat bordel.

Je to síla, je to tlak, je to energie. Tančíme na stolech a neustále přidáváme hlasitost. Nejedná se o žádné dnes tolik časté, obyčejné retro, ale o propracované, inteligentně složené skladby. Za chvíli přijdou i holky, je na co se těšit. Už asi jiný nebudu. Nechci. Možná jsem starý šedivý pes, ale alba jako "Psychoverse" budu vždy podporovat a hlavně poslouchat. Hoří totiž jasným plamenem. 


Pro bližší orientaci je nutné napsat, že na to jdou pánové podobným způsobem jako smečky z Bay Area, nebo třeba jako VOIVOD. Těch styčných bodů je spousta a na své si přijde každý fanoušek stylu. Vše je postaveno na ostrých, nekompromisních riffech, úderných bicích a jedovatém vokálu. Kýváme se spokojeně do rytmu a headbanging je zaručen. Mám pocit, že mě URAL strhli do obrovského mlýnu. Padám k zemi, točím se v mosh-pitu, někdo mě zvedá, možná mi pukla lebka a je mi to jedno. Hlavní je, že cítím energii, velký tlak, takový ten zdravý vztek. Italové moc dobře vědí, jak napsat dobré skladby. Viděli jste někdy někoho, když jej zasáhl elektrický proud? Tak podobně na mě působí i nové album "Psychoverse". Někdo mi nalil tvrdý alkohol a všechny holky jsou najednou krásné a milé. Tohle je přesně druh muziky, která se má hrát při pátečních party. Na periferii města, mezi kamarády, kteří jsou na tom jako vy. Poslouchají metal hlavně srdcem. URAL jsou úplně stejní jako my, dávno prokletí. Já jim zkrátka věřím každý tón, každou melodii, každý úder bicích. Až bude zase pondělí, tak mě bude bolet hlava a vnitřnosti budu mít v jednom ohni. V ulicích budu potkávat jenom samé zombie a v práci budu mlčet a vzpomínat na to, jak jsme s kamarády řádili. Já už nepotřebuji k životu žádné zbytečnosti. Stačí mi dobré pivo a muzika. Tahle deska byla a je v mém playlistu už dlouhou dobu. Kurva, díky za to, tohle je metal přesně podle mého gusta! Víc po mě nechtějte, jdu zase pařit. Crossover thrash metal, zahraný s noblesou a velkou silou! Zásah přímo na solar plexus!

I'm calling my friend to see if he bought beer. If he says yes, I'm happy. We finally have some time off. We take the bus and bring a big keg with us. I'm in charge of the music and in my player is the new album by Italian URAL. I didn't know the band before, but I played a few samples at home and I have to say that this is exactly the kind of thrash metal I still love to listen to. Finally we are at the place. An old garage outside of town where no one will mind us messing around.

It's power, it's pressure, it's energy. We're dancing on the tables and we keep turning up the volume. It's not any of the common retro stuff that's so common these days, but sophisticated, intelligently composed songs. The girls are coming soon, there's a lot to look forward to. I don't think I'll be any different. I don't want to. I may be an old grey dog, but albums like "Psychoverse" I will always support and most importantly listen to. They burn with a bright flame.


To put it in perspective, the gentlemen are going about it in a similar way to the Bay Area packs, or perhaps VOIVOD. There are many points of contact and every fan of the style will find something to like. Everything is built on sharp, uncompromising riffs, punchy drums and venomous vocals. We sway contentedly to the beat and headbanging is guaranteed. I feel like I've been sucked into a giant mill by URAL. I'm falling to the ground, spinning in a mosh-pit, someone's picking me up, maybe my skull cracked and I don't care. The main thing is that I feel energy, a lot of pressure, a kind of healthy rage. The Italians know very well how to write good songs. Have you ever seen anyone electrocuted? That's how the new album "Psychoverse" affects me. Someone poured me hard liquor and all the girls are suddenly beautiful and nice. This is exactly the kind of music that should be played at Friday night parties. On the outskirts of town, with friends who are just like you. They listen to metal with their hearts. URAL are just like us, cursed long ago. I just trust them with every note, every melody, every drum beat. When it's Monday again, I'll have a headache and my insides will be on fire. I'll only meet zombies in the streets and I'll be silent at work, remembering the rampage my friends and I went on. I don't need any more useless things in my life. All I need is good beer and music. This record has been on my playlist for a long time. Fuck, thanks for that, this is metal just my kind of metal! Don't ask me for more, I'm going to party again. Crossover thrash metal, played with refinement and great power! It hits right on the solar plexus!

Interview - MARTYRDOOM - An ancient doom death metal ritual that will make your bones crumble into dust!


Interview with doom death metal band from Poland - MARTYRDOOM.

Ave MARTYRDOOM! Greetings to the underground. I hope everything is fine with you. It should be because this year you have released a second long-play full-length album in your band's career. I have to admit it has literally blown my mind. It is dark, energic and as if it cuts by the sharp edge of the knife. I can hear from the record you did a really good job and you added a big portion of the talent, too. How do you perceive the new album in comparison to the previous one? Where did you want to move and in what are these two records different?

Greg: Hailz! Thanks for the kind words about the new record and thanks for having us do this! I know that it’s a cliché, but for us, the second album is certainly more mature and more thought-out. It’s certainly more coherent than Grievous Psychosis, it doesn’t have re-recorded tracks and only like two have been written more than a couple of years ago. So it’s still fairly fresh for us. Also, I’d say that it’s more angry and mournful.

„As Torment Prevails“ includes all attributes of good death and doom metal. For me personally, it represents the record, which I really like to listen to. How did you produce it? How look the writing process of new material in the case of MARTYRDOOM?

Greg: So, some of the tracks were kinda old (Garden of Flesh, Festering Existence), but majority of the new record was written in 2021 and 2022. From the outside perspective it seems like we were writing a new album for 6 years, but between lineup change, pandemic and a time for just playing some live gigs - for us it’s closer to 2 years. Once we’re focused, basically every other week, someone has a draft for a new track. And this is how we wrote the material - someone brings a draft version of a track, and we process it together. Even though “As Torment Prevails” has just been released, we already have started writing new material.


Who is signed for recording and mastering? I have to confirm that the sound literally kills. It keeps making me turn up the volume on the hi-fi tower. You have a sound that's harsh, raw and dark and animalistic at the same time. How was it working with you? What studio did you record in and how did it all work?

Greg: Thanks! I’m really glad it turned out that way, because we were pretty feisty about it during the mixing process. We recorded the majority of the album in Chróst Studio, which was pretty known for all major pop and rock stars in the 2000s. The owner, Winicjusz Chróst - guitarist of legendary polish band Breakout, unfortunately passed away in 2020. The family decided that his legendary studio shouldn’t stay closed, and allowed Sociak to be a resident engineer there. This allowed us to record the album using fully analog and tube gear, which translates to the sound.

An important part and a kind of extra bonus for fans today is the physical CD. You released the new album at CD in label Memento mori, and it comes with a demonic cover art. The author is Ryszard Wojtynsky. How did you choose the motif and how does it relate to the music at the record?

Greg: We worked with Ryszard Wojtyński when we were releasing “Grievous Psychosis” and we knew that we wanted his artwork for “As Torment Prevails”. After he agreed, we sent him a rough mix of new tracks, along with the lyrics. We had a brief talk about the themes on the album (grief, mourning, violence) and our favourite album covers and he created an oil painting based on that. He sent us a draft painting with an explanation of what he’s going to do further, we added some notes on what we like or see there. Next was the unveiling, and to be honest we were shocked at what he did. He basically exceeded our expectations for the cover, to the point that every band member has the copy of the painting framed at home.


I have been wandering the underground for over thirty years and I still go to Poland for music with certainty. I think we have a similar nature and taste when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and I monitor your scene carefully. Maybe I envy you a little, because we only have a few death metal bands that are worth it. How do you explain that death metal are doing so well in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels?

Greg: Honestly, from my perspective, the majority of “bigger”, or rather recognisable bands are playing either black metal, or something combined with it. Or another variation of 2000s era Behemoth. Of course, we have some great underground bands and labels, but I’d say they mostly get overlooked in the sea of mediocre black metal acts that are another deviation of what Mgła or Furia are currently doing. I certainly envy your scene, especially the festivals! Been to Brutal Assault like 4 or 5 times, and of course let’s not forget a mecca for every extreme music maniac - Obscene Extreme! Been there like 5 or 6 times and it always feels like coming home.

You play doom death metal influenced by, among other things, the old school. Today, the band can't avoid comparisons, but I would like to know how the idea to start MARTYRDOOM was born, who was and is your metal idol? Where do you want to move your band? Are you attracted to large foreign festivals, for example, are you willing to go on tour with a more famous band?

Greg: It was born like any other band made by 17 year olds. We started as Deathlust in 2010, as a group of friends that wanted to play metal. We started by playing covers of Metallica, Sepultura, Nunslaughter and Hellhammer, and when we began to write our own material it leaned more into the side of death metal. Our music evolves with us, and with what we are or were listening - we found ourselves in death/doom, and it stayed. I’d say that the major inspiration (that is not as obvious as the typical death metal inspirations you can hear) for all of Martyrdoom is anything that Tom Warrior did. We love his approach to music, that puts emotions first and that even the simplest sounds can create a sonic mayhem. In terms of the future, who can say? We already started writing some new material, and from what we can tell at this moment - it will be more downtuned, and less schematic. We are trying to leave the scheme of tracks laid as ABABC, and trying to experiment a little. Of course it doesn’t mean that we want to go progressive way, more like we want to leave writing “songs”.


When I started my website six years ago, I had a vision that I would try to support bands that are not so much popular, or they are lost in underground. To let the world knows about them. I think I'm doing quite well, at least according to the responses. How do you approach the promotion of your music? Do you rely upon the label or do you send the CDs for various reviews by yourself? For example, I buy albums that I really enjoy. What about you? Are you also fans who often support your colleagues? Do you go to concerts?

Greg: I think that you are doing a tremendous job man! We are doing a bit of promotion by ourselves, but we’re not that really into social media. The “market” is oversaturated and (at least for us) it’s really tiresome to break through the thousands of new releases every month. As for doing our part in supporting the scene, we are of course going to various gigs (maybe not as much as we’d like, but hey, that’s life) and buying merch from our colleagues. We know that they are doing this from passion, just as we do.

On the one hand, today the new band has a lot of opportunities to make themselves more known, but on the other hand, there are a huge number of groups and the fans are getting lost in this big metal sea. A lot of people just download mp3s from the internet and instead of to visit the concert they prefer to spit poisonous saliva on Facebook. How do modern technologies affect you as MARTYRDOOM? What do you think about downloading music, google metalists, streaming music, etc.?

Greg: As I said in the previous question, we’re not really fans of social media. In the case of streaming services, I treat them as convenience. Or rather as a necessary evil. If you don’t have a presence in streaming services, you don’t exist. If you think about it, it’s kinda bullshit that you have to pay different companies (that are owned by the streaming services) for the “privilege” to put your music out there. Meanwhile mega-labels are getting promoted by Spotify (or any streaming), so the line can go up. Bunch of bullshit if you ask me. But hey, at least our music has a chance to reach a broader audience. On the other hand, I’m from the generation that started discovering music by downloading MP3s and reading online zines and blogs. But of course, as I grew, I started just buying music and merch from the artists I wanted to support. And this continues to this day - I’m using streaming services, but I’ll always try to support artists that I want. Be it by going to the gig, or buying their stuff directly from them, not from the label. I might be delusional, but I think that extreme metal fans are always supportive of the music they love.


I like to ask the musicians what death metal means to them. How would they define it, whether it is more the philosophy and lifestyle thing for them or "just" relaxation? What does it mean for you? How do you perceive and experience it?

Greg: I often joke that death metal is the single greatest thing that ever happened to me, haha. For me, the essence of death metal are the raw, unbound emotions that come with the music. Even with “mid” death metal, you still have the aggression that you don’t have with any other genre. I don’t know about philosophy and lifestyle, but I guess it also plays a huge part in my life, since it has been embedded within me for so many years. I can certainly tell that I love, that death metal scene is so chill.

Finally, a classic but important question. What is MARTYRDOOM planning in the upcoming months? Where can we see you at the stage and when will you visit Czech republic?

Greg: Writing some new material so the fans don’t have to wait another 6 years for a new album, haha. On the serious note, we’re probably going to promote As Torment Prevails in the upcoming year, do some merch and maybe try to put it out on vinyl. We don’t have any concrete plans yet.

Man, we never played abroad - if someone wants us to come, then we’re open for invites. And we’re cheap! We’ll play for gas, grass and booze.

Thank you so much for the interview. I wish a lot of success to the new album and let the number of your fans expand as much as possible. I will look forward to seeing you somewhere live again. I wish you a lot of success both musically and personally. I'm going to push „As Torment Prevails“ into my head again!
