Šest mrtvých těl v místnosti. Nejedná se o dnes tolik oblíbeného sériového vraha, ale jen o další obyčejný den války. Kameraman se usmívá. Lidé chtějí krev a násilí. Připomíná to vášnivý dav, čekající na veřejnou popravu. Sledujeme živé horory a doufáme, že jednou někdo nevystoupí ze stínu a nepodřízne nám hrdlo. Vítejte v království bolesti a krutého death metalu. Jedná se o styl, který dokáže nejlépe popsat chlad v našich duších.

Důkazem je nová deska německých maniaků NEW WORLD DEPRESSION. Ti mě zaujali již svým předchozím albem z roku 2020 ("Descent" - recenze je odkazována dole pod článkem). I letos se jedná o desku po okraj narvanou mrazivými melodiemi, drtivými rytmy (v některých momentech i v thrashovém tempu) a chorobným vokálem. Jestli jste někdy sledovali staré černobílé dokumenty z války, asi moc dobře víte, o čem píšu. Atmosféra nové nahrávky je totiž velmi podobná. 


Dobré desky se poznají podle toho, že se v místnosti, ve které je posloucháte, ochladí o několik stupňů. Na poslech se budete těšit již cestou domů. Až se zavřete do sklepa a zhasnete všechna světla. Němci se volně inspirují u BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY. A dělají to velmi elegantně a s vkusem. Songy jsou velmi dobře napsány a obsahují v sobě pradávnou sílu a energii. Drive, který se velmi těžko definuje. Staří fanoušci kovu smrti určitě vědí, o co se jedná. NEW WORLD DEPRESSION na to jdou postaru a velmi poctivě. Základem jsou zapamatovatelné motivy se silným základem. Přidávány jsou pak další zajímavé pasáže s vlastními nápady a invencí. Nahrávka má skvělý zvuk (Jörg Uken) a povedený obal. Pánové si dali záležet na poctivém řemesle. Na to se v dnešní době občas zapomíná. Zde je ale vše v nejlepším pořádku. Užívám si songy, přidávám stále hlasitost, tančím na vlastním hrobě. Oceňuji feeling i touhu ničit. "Interment of Sins" jsem si poprvé pustil, když jsem dokoukal večerní zprávy. Bylo mi smutno z dnešního světa. Raději jsem se zavřel do své kobky a užíval si tuhle nahrávku. Pokud máte rádi starý, prašivý a na bod mrazu ochlazený smrtící kov, tak neváhejte ani chvilku. Hraje se zde pro vás i pro všechny prokleté. Doslova cítím blízkost Smrti i Satana. Nejsem už dávno na tomto světě. Moje vnitřnosti jsou zasaženi snětí a já vám mohu album jenom doporučit. Zabijácké, old school death metalové monstrum!

Six dead bodies in the room. This is not the serial killer so popular today, but just another ordinary day in the war. The cameraman is smiling. People want blood and violence. It's like a passionate crowd waiting for a public execution. We watch live horror movies and hope that one day someone doesn't step out of the shadows and slit our throats. Welcome to the kingdom of pain and cruel death metal. It's the style that best describes the chill in our souls.

Proof of this is the new album from German maniacs NEW WORLD DEPRESSION. They have already caught my attention with their previous album from 2020 ("Descent" - review linked below the article). This year it is also a record packed to the brim with chilling melodies, crushing rhythms (in some moments even in thrash tempo) and morbid vocals. If you've ever watched old black and white documentaries from the war, you probably know very well what I'm writing about. In fact, the atmosphere of the new recording is very similar.


You can tell good records by the fact that the room you're listening to them in gets a few degrees cooler. You'll look forward to listening to them on the way home. When you lock yourself in the basement and turn off all the lights. The Germans are loosely inspired by BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY. And they do it very elegantly and tastefully. The songs are very well written and contain an ancient power and energy. A drive that is very hard to define. Old fans of death metal surely know what this is all about. NEW WORLD DEPRESSION go about it the old fashioned way and very honestly. Memorable themes with a strong foundation are the foundation. Then more interesting passages are added with their own ideas and inventiveness. The recording has a great sound (Jörg Uken) and hilarious cover art. The masters have done a lot of work with honest craftsmanship. This is sometimes forgotten nowadays. But here everything is in the best order. I enjoy the songs, I keep turning up the volume, I dance on my own grave. I appreciate the feeling and the desire to destroy. I first listened to "Interment of Sins" when I finished watching the evening news. I was sad about the world today. I preferred to shut myself in my dungeon and enjoy this record. If you like old, dusty and freezing cold death metal, don't hesitate a moment. It's played here for you and all the damned. I can literally feel the proximity of Death and Satan. I'm not long for this world. My insides are stricken with dreaming and I can only recommend the album to you. Killer, old school death metal monster!

Ave NEW WORLD DEPRESSION! I am listening your newest „Interment of Sins“ again and again and can not get rid of it. I Think the album is really great! What is your opinion about the album now, after some time? Would you like to change something? What feedback do you have from the fans, what anout the reviews? 

Hi Jakub, Cheerz from Germany, this is Hütte. I am the Singer in NWD, and first I want to say thx for the nice words about our new album. As I can speak for our Band, we are still really happy with the result of the album. We received some really awesome reviews till now, also the first reaction of the Fans was incredible, All is fine at the moment.

Who signed the dark cover? How did you choose the theme for the album? Did the author hear your new album for inspiration? Personally, I like the cover incredibly much. 

Tahir83 was the art designer. We found this Design on his Facebook or Instagram account, it was a premade Cover, so he did not hear our music before. We had the Album Title “Interment of sins” before in our minds and we thought it matched perfectly together. We did some few changes, and it was ready 🙂.


How do you compose new songs at NEW WORLD DEPRESSION? What is the process of creating new material? Who is the author of the music? 

Our guitarists Ritche and Julian usually write our Songs or Song-Ideas at home, they record it digitally and send it to us. The vocal lines and lyrics I also work mostly out at my home, after the basic structure is fixed we arrange these Songs in our rehearsal room. In the past we wrote our Songs in the rehearsal room. A couple of years ago we changed this strategy and we think the new method is more productive.

Who is the autor of lyrics for „Interment of Sins“ and what they are about? Where do you get inspiration?

It was me. I take our Artwork for the inspiration of this Song, as mentioned earlier, we had the Album title and Artwork before the Song was written. The demon in the middle, who is supposed to stand as the collector of our sins, towers over the remains of human civilization. Countless souls seek forgiveness and we ask the question, "Is it too late to repent?" I leave the rest to the imagination of the listener!


The sound of "Interment of Sins" was mixed by Jörg Uken. I like this sound seems to be cold, dark and at the same time legible. It looks like Jörg did a great job. Would I wonder how did you create this novelty? Did you all have a saying on the final sound? 

For us, the album sound was a big issue. On the one hand, we wanted to have the iconic OSDM sound, but we also wanted to distinguish ourselves with an independent sound. Finding this in-between was not very easy, but Jörg from soundlodge supported us in the best possible way. He took a lot of time and with his many years of experience we were able to achieve the perfect result for us. So you could say it’s a novelty, but with classic death metal roots. Just as we want it.

You play a typical old school death metal. You have never left this way, you are „orthodox“. Personally, this is one of the reasons why I like your work so much, but have you ever thought about playing something a bit different, to give NEW WORLD DEPRESSION some variety?

Our roots were always Death Metal, but specially in the early years we played more a kind of death´n´roll, mixed with a bit of NY Hadrcore element but over the years we got more and more into the OSDM direction. And I think this is a perfect match for us. We love Bolt thrower, Asphyx and all this kind of legendary 90s stuff, and these influences we mixed in our Songs.


Will the new album "Interment of Sins" also be released on LP? What's your relationship to vinyls? Do you collect them? Do you have a large collection? Some bands today sell more vinyls than CDs. What about you? 

Yes for sure, “Interment of Sins” is available on vinyl, but the first press (200 pcs.) running slowly to sell out. Our Label “Fucking Kill Records” is working on a re-press currently, Lets see how fast we can get them. We also produced a CD Version, some people still want them, but our focus is definitely on vinyl. Additionally we do a limited Tape version for 50 pcs. Our mates from “Santa diabla Records” do that for us. The Tapes are also close to being sold out.

Most of our band members are vinyl collectors, we love to hear music on vinyl, to hold the cover in your hand, read the lyrics while you hear the music, that's great!

I've been wandering the underworld for over thirty years and I go to Germany for music as a matter of course. I think we have similar moods and tastes when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and follow your scene very closely. Maybe I'm a bit jealous, we only have a few death metal bands in our country that are worth it. What do you explain that death metal is so successful in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels? 

It's a curse and a blessing at the same time, there are so many bands especially in Death Metal here in Germany, that makes it not always easy to get gigs, but as a spectator you have the opportunity to go to many concerts. It seems to be that we have currently a good phase for OSDM Music in Germany and we are a part of it, this is cool.


When we look back at the beginning ... What was the first impulse to found the band? And why the death metal? It's not the typical style which can would give you great "glory".

Sascha, our bass player had founded the band back in 2005 with a drummer and a guitarist. I joined 2 months later as a singer. Dirk, our former drummer, was actually not a metal drummer at all and he had to teach himself to play double bass first, haha, that's why we had Death´n´Roll influences from Motörhead etc. at that time. But the idea was always to play hard and brutal stuff and over the years and some changes in the line up we found our sound up to now.

I think to start a band is a dream of many kids, and so we all just started without knowing what we are doing without thinking for a great glory with a band. Just having a good time with your buddies and making some noise and drinking beer.

I'm the oldest in the band with almost fifty, and of course I've played in a few other bands during my youth. My first band started in the early 90s, our band called “Fucking Over” funny and stupid Name 🙂, Nobody really was able to play an instrument, but we dont care, haha.

As well our guitarists Ritchie and Julian and our drummer Sig have had experience in previous bands (Unrest, Danos, Silverstone Garage etc.). Currently Ritchie and Julian are also active as drummers with the Bands No Shelter and Manøver.


What about you and concerts in general? Are you a band that goes for concerts anytime you can or you are picky about where you will play? Do you have a dream, maybe a group you would like to go with for a tour or festival, a city where you would like to perform? 

In the situation that we can choose the concerts, we are unfortunately not, but of course you try to check before what it is for a location, what other bands play there with etc.. Privately we try to go to concerts where we can, but Sascha, Sig and I have children and family and it is not always so easy. Ritchie and Julian are also on the road a lot with their other bands and there is not always much time left.

Once on tour with Obituary, the heroes of my youth, that would be awesome, dreams are allowed.

What about the plans of NEW WORLD DEPRESSION in the upcoming months?

We just played our Release Show in April. The shows went really awesome, a really cool crowd, they bought a lot of merch stuff, which was a good start to present our new album.

Now in May we have our hometown gig, it's our self organized small Festival called “The Storm is coming”. Currently the summer is a bit empty and I think we used the time to write some new Songs. After the summer break we had planned a couple of shows in autumn and winter.

Ave NEW WORLD DEPRESSION! Vaši letošní novinku „Interment of Sins“ poslouchám pořád dokola a „nemůžu se jí zbavit“! Myslím, že se opravdu povedla. Jak to vidíš s odstupem ty? Změnil bys něco? Jak vůbec reagují na skladby fanoušci? A co recenze, kritiky?

Ahoj Jakube, zdravím z Německa, tady Hütte. Jsem zpěvák v NWD a nejdřív ti chci poděkovat za krásná slova o našem novém albu. Pokud mohu mluvit za naši kapelu, jsme s výsledkem alba zatím opravdu spokojeni. Doposud jsme obdrželi několik opravdu úžasných recenzí, také první reakce fanoušků byly neuvěřitelné. V tuto chvíli je tedy vše v pořádku.

Kdo je podepsán pod temným obalem? Jak jste motiv na album vlastně vybírali? Slyšel autor pro inspiraci vaše nové album? Osobně se mi obal neskutečně líbí.

Autorem je Tahir83. Tento návrh jsme našli na jeho účtu na Facebooku nebo Instagramu, byl to předpřipravený obal, takže naši hudbu předtím neslyšel. Název alba "Interment of sins" jsme měli v hlavě už dřív a přišlo nám, že se k sobě perfektně hodí. Udělali jsme pár změn a bylo to hotové.


Jakým způsobem u NEW WORLD DEPRESSION vnikají nové skladby? Jak probíhá samotný proces tvorby nového materiálu? Kdo je autorem hudby?

Naši kytaristé Ritche a Julian obvykle píší skladby doma, digitálně je nahrávají a posílají nám je. Vokální linky a texty také většinou vymýšlím doma, po ustálení základní struktury tyto skladby aranžujeme ve zkušebně. V minulosti jsme psali ve zkušebně. Před pár lety jsme tuto strategii změnili a myslíme si, že nový způsob je produktivnější.

Kdo je autorem textů pro „Interment of Sins“ a o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci?

Byl jsem to já. Inspirací pro tuto skladbu je náš obal, jak už bylo zmíněno, název alba a obal jsme měli ještě předtím, než byla skladba napsána. Démon uprostřed, který má stát jako sběrač našich hříchů, se tyčí nad zbytky lidské civilizace. Nespočet duší hledá odpuštění a my si klademe otázku: "Je už pozdě činit pokání?". Zbytek ponechávám na fantazii posluchače!


Zvuk „Interment of Sins“ mixoval Jörg Uken. Líbí se mi, že zníte studeně, temně a zároveň čitelně. Vypadá to, že Jörg odvedl vynikající práci. Mě by zajímalo, jak novinka vznikala? Mluvili jste všichni do výsledného zvuku?

Pro nás byl zvuk alba velkým problémem. Na jedné straně jsme chtěli mít ikonický zvuk OSDM, ale zároveň jsme se chtěli odlišit vlastním zvukem. Najít tento mezičlánek nebylo úplně snadné, ale Jörg ze Soundlodge nás podpořil tím nejlepším možným způsobem. Věnoval nám spoustu času a díky jeho dlouholetým zkušenostem se nám podařilo dosáhnout pro nás dokonalého výsledku. Takže by se dalo říct, že je to novinka, ale s klasickými death metalovými kořeny. Přesně tak, jak jsme chtěli.

Hrajete typický, klasický „starý“ death metal. Nikdy jste z téhle cesty neuhnuli, jste „ortodoxní“. Osobně je to jeden z důvodů, proč se mi vaše tvorba tolik líbí, ale nelákalo tě někdy zkusit hrát něco trošku jiného, nějak tvorbu NEW WORLD DEPRESSION ozvláštnit?

Naše kořeny byly vždy death metalové, ale zejména v prvních letech jsme hráli spíše death´n´roll, smíšený s trochou newyorského hardcoru, ale postupem času jsme se stále více a více ubírali směrem OSDM. A myslím, že to k sobě perfektně pasuje. Milujeme Bolt Thrower, Asphyx a všechny tyhle legendární věci z 90. let a tyhle vlivy jsme v našich skladbách smíchali.


Vyjde novinka „Interment of Sins“ také na gramodesce? Jaký máš vůbec vztah k vinylům? Sbíráš je? Máš rozsáhlou sbírku? Některé kapely dnes prodají víc vinylů než CD. Jak jste na tom vy?

Ano, "Interment of Sins" je k dispozici na vinylu, ale první náklad (200 ks) se pomalu vyprodává. Náš label "Fucking Kill Records" v současné době pracuje na re-pressu, uvidíme, jak rychle se nám ho podaří vydat. Vyrobili jsme také CD verzi, někteří lidé je stále chtějí, ale naše pozornost se rozhodně soustředí na vinyl. Kromě toho děláme limitovanou verzi kazet v počtu 50 kusů. Dělají to pro nás naši kamarádi ze "Santa Diabla Records". Kazety už jsou také téměř vyprodané. Většina členů naší kapely jsou sběratelé vinylů, rádi posloucháme hudbu na vinylu, držet obal v ruce, číst si texty a přitom poslouchat hudbu, to je prostě skvělé!

Toulám se podsvětím již přes třicet let a do Německa si chodím pro muziku vlastně na jistotu. Myslím, že máme podobnou náturu i vkus, co se týká metalu. Mám vaše kapely hodně rád a pečlivě sleduji vaši scénu. Možná vám i trošku závidím, my máme u nás jen pár death metalových smeček, které stojí za to. Čím si to vysvětluješ, že zrovna u vás se death metalu tolik daří? Jak vnímáš vaši scénu, fanoušky, labely?

Je to prokletí i požehnání zároveň, protože v Německu je tolik kapel, zejména death metalových, že není vždy snadné sehnat koncerty, ale jako fanoušek máš možnost navštívit mnoho koncertů. Zdá se, že v současné době máme v Německu dobrou fázi pro OSDM hudbu a my jsme její součástí, to je super.


Když se ještě podíváme do začátku…Co bylo vlastně tím prvním impulsem, že jste dali dohromady kapelu? A proč zrovna death metal? Není to zrovna styl, který by vám získal velkou „slávu“.

Sascha (basák) založil kapelu v roce 2005 s bubeníkem a kytaristou. Já jsem se přidal o dva měsíce později jako zpěvák. Dirk, náš bývalý bubeník, vlastně vůbec nebyl metalový bubeník a musel se nejdřív naučit hrát na dvojšlapku, haha, proto jsme v té době měli vlivy Death´n´Rollu od Motörhead apod. Ale myšlenka byla vždycky hrát tvrdé a brutální věci a v průběhu let a několika změn v sestavě jsme našli náš zvuk. Myslím, že založit kapelu je snem mnoha dětí, a tak jsme všichni prostě začali, aniž bychom věděli, co děláme, aniž bychom pomýšleli na velkou slávu. Prostě se jen bavit s kámošema, dělat kravál a pít pivo. Já jsem v kapele nejstarší, je mi skoro padesát a samozřejmě jsem v mládí hrál v několika dalších kapelách. Moje první kapela vznikla na začátku devadesátých let, jmenovala se "Fucking Over" - vtipný a hloupý název, haha. Nikdo pořádně neuměl hrát na žádný nástroj, ale nám to bylo jedno. Stejně tak naši kytaristé Ritchie a Julian a bubeník Sig měli zkušenosti z předchozích kapel (Unrest, Danos, Silverstone Garage atd.). V současné době Ritchie a Julian působí také jako bubeníci v kapelách No Shelter a Manøver.


Co vlastně vy a koncerty obecně? Jste kapelou, která jezdí po koncertech, co to jenom jde nebo si hodně vybíráte? Máte nějaký sen, třeba skupinu, se kterou byste chtěli vyrazit na turné nebo festival, město, kde byste chtěli vystupovat?

V situaci, kdy si můžeme vybírat koncerty, bohužel nejsme, ale samozřejmě se snažíte předem zjistit, co je to za místo, s jakými dalšími kapelami tam hrajete apod. Snažíme se jezdit na koncerty, ale Sascha, Sig i já máme děti a rodiny, takže ne vždy je to jednoduché. Ritchie a Julian jsou také hodně na cestách se svými dalšími kapelami, tak občas nezbývá moc času. Vyrazit jednou na turné s Obituary, hrdiny mého mládí, to by bylo úžasné, sny jsou povoleny.

Co chystají NEW WORLD DEPRESSION v nejbližších měsících? Už připravujete nový materiál pro další desku?

V dubnu jsme hráli na naší „Release Párty“. Koncert proběhl skvěle, přišlo opravdu skvělé publikum, které si koupilo spoustu merche, což byl dobrý začátek představení našeho nového alba. Teď v květnu nás čeká koncert v našem rodném městě, je to náš vlastní malý festival s názvem "The Storm is Coming". Momentálně je léto trochu prázdnější a myslím, že ten čas využijeme k napsání nových skladeb. Po letní pauze jsme naplánovali několik koncertů na podzim a zimu.

Děkuji za rozhovor a přeji co nejvíce vítězství na death metalových bojištích. Přeji spoustu prodaných nosičů, stovky šílených fanoušků a tuny dobrých nápadů. Ať se vám daří i v osobním životě.
